What if we banned Google?
Direct (mostly DuckDuckGo): 41.9%
Yahoo: 24.1%
Bing: 17.5%
Google: 13.8%
Other: 2.7%
What strikes me is that Google's contribution is tiny compared to competitors with far smaller market share.
The site is not banned or deindexed. Google simply sends very little traffic compared to Bing/Yahoo/DDG-type ecosystems.
So I started thinking: what if independent websites turned this into an intentional business model instead of treating it as a failure?
My idea would be:
* add Google noindex,
* openly position the site as independent from Google Search,
* create a small "outside Google" / independent-web badge,
* and lean harder into audiences coming from Bing, DuckDuckGo, bookmarks, Pinterest, direct visits, etc.
The reasoning is simple: if Google already contributes very little economically, the downside may be limited. At the same time, the positioning itself could create identity, loyalty, word-of-mouth, and referrals among users who already prefer alternatives to Google.
In other words, instead of chasing Google endlessly, build a recognizable "independent web" identity around not depending on them.
Has anyone experimented with something similar?
