Inspirational thread: Post ONE quote that you like most and how you apply it in Your IM niche?

New year is coming ...
Recession is still showing its effects ...
People are trying to earn money in different ways to support their families ...

By reading threads here on WF, most of them asking how to increase traffic, how to increase sales, how to get more backlinks and PR, problem with returns, PPCs, search engines etc etc ...

Sometimes I feel like I am going to fail in things I do. But I pull myself together and move on.

All these made me to start this thread:

Post ONE inspirational quote here and tell us how you use it/intend to use it in Your IM marketing! So we will be encouraged by you all guys and girls.

HERE IS MINE:

God doesn't require us to succeed; he only requires that you try. - Mother Teresa

I use it in promoting my sites. I try to promote my sites (especially two of them) every day spending atleast 10 - 12 hours per week writing articles, getting backlinks, forum promotion. I know people spend much more than this. But I use other few hours for customer support and product related stuff.

I will do my best to promote my sites and leave rest to God. Once you try, success will follow you.

What is yours? Let us hear it.

    Screw it, let's do it!

And I try to use it, uhh, in the obvious way

On a more serious note, here are some lines from Coldplay that really inspire me to actually get something done:

And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
    Just what you're worth

If I have to choose just one, that will probably be:

"Winners never quit and quitters never win."
      Vince Lombardi

How to implement it in IM? Let's take for example all the "not so effective" IM methods. Like directory submissions. Sure, you can spend your time much more effectively, than just submitting your link to 1000s of irrelevant directories, which will probably never help you in the SERP's, but here is a story. I had a client, some months ago, that refused to listen to my bragging about how directories are old and inefficient way to get links, so finally the first thing we do with his website was a massive directory submission and what do you know: the site was getting pretty good and stable positions at the SERP's. Yes, Yahoo serps, not Google, but a sale is a sale, no matter where you get it from. He just don't quit - he wanted to do this and he had success.

Taken from Randy Pausch's The Last Lecture:
"Brick walls are there for a reason. They are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. The brick walls are there to stop people who don't want it badly enough."
I use this in every aspect of life, but I particularly use it in IM to keep obstacles in perspective. It really has helped me! On good days, I can actually look at setbacks with a sort of twisted affection. I just envision them as opportunities to prove to myself how badly I want it!

Cindy, I absolutely love that quote!

I would suppose that most of the inspirational quotes shared in this thread are designed to encourage success in our business endeavors, as they should, since this in an internet marketing forum. That being said however, I believe that as we work we also live life and there are parallels to draw from.

Perhaps there is something to be said for those (such as the late Randy Pausch) facing the reality of a terminal diagnosis, who upon reflection of their lives, often times offer profound words of wisdom.

The late Jim Valvano, in his famous last speech at the Espy awards of 1993 just 8 weeks prior to his death said:

"To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special."

Now apply the human aspect of this to our business in how we relate to our customers and in bulding relationships with them. In regard to my business I believe it definitely has had a tremendous inpact for the good.

      Cheers,
      Jim

I absolutely love this thread...absolutely inspiring...and you can never have enough inspiration.

For starters- I like a song better

        Imagine there's no Heaven
        It's easy if you try
        No hell below us
        Above us only sky
        Imagine all the people
        Living for today

        Imagine there's no countries
        It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
        And no religion too
        Imagine all the people
        Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

        Imagine no possessions
        I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
        A brotherhood of man
        Imagine all the people
        Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

For Seconds- a quote from Rent "No Day But Today"

        Both are extremely true...

Cheers and thanks for the boost

"Attention is the currency of the future."

People today are absolutely starved for the attention of other human beings. More than anything else, they want to know they matter. That someone, somewhere, is listening to them and cares what they have to say - and will do something about it.

Case in point: got an email from someone the other day who used the wrong email address to subscribe to a list. Wanted to know how to change it. Could I have sent back "unsubscribe and send an email to this address from the right email" and been done with it? Sure.

But it took me about two minutes to log into AWeber, unsubscribe the wrong address, and subscribe the right one.

That two minutes matters to this person. It matters that I didn't say "I'm not doing that, up yours, you do it." And 99% of people would have said just that, and excused it by saying "I can't very well respond personally to every email I ever get from a customer." And we all would have nodded and said "you know, he's right, you can't."

But you can respond to some of them. You don't necessarily have to do everything everyone asks, but come on - there's a lot of room between everything for everyone and nothing for anyone. And where you sit on that particular continuum will ultimately define your level of success.

"Today, we're going back to the basics. Gentlemen, this is a football..." - Vince Lombardi, The Lombardi Story

That line is from a movie about Lombardi's life. After a miserable, sloppy performance by the Packers, Lombardi tells them they've forgotten how to tackle, block and so on, so they're going to start all over.

I've found that starting over and re-learning the basics from time to time is essential. Otherwise, it's too easy to get caught up in tricks and gimmicks.

I also get a laugh from that scene. After Lombardi delivers that line, designated team smartass Paul Hornung chimes in with "Coach, could you slow down a little?"

--> Don't look at the PROBLEM, but at the SOLUTION
    .

Favorite quote of all times. People wasting their time looking at problems and obstacles, they complain and whine instead. They put the problem in the spotlight and look at it from all sides, lamentating. They point out how bad the problem is because of this and this and this. And while they're doing this they're wasting time where they could actually DO something to solve the problem instead.

        "Failure is not an option."

"Failure is not an option," Gene Kranz, lead flight director for
Mission Control, announced to the ground crew in Houston as
Apollo 13 approached the critical earth-to-moon decision loop.

"Failure is not an option," is a message all my heart kids send
when they fight against difficult odds - to survive.

"Failure is not an option," has become part of my own belief
system, not just in IM but in other things.

It is a quote that gives me energy, inspiration and the firm
committment to stick with things - and especially in IM, the
ability to stick with things UNTIL they work out is a big
        'success secret'.

Another quote I read recently, and nicely complements this one,
is from Donald Trump in "Never Give Up":

"Wholeness is a combination of all components of life that
make us healthy. The opposite of wholeness is failure."

Puts a nice twist on the definition of "failure". Make more
money at the cost of health and relationships, and it's STILL
        "failure".

        WHOLENESS is success.

Make money - and keep that in context with everything else.

        Succeed in 2010 and beyond.

        All success

"Never give in, never give in, never; never; never; never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense" - Winston Churchill

This was what really carried me over the hump, so to speak, and will continue to guide me in the new year. I spent several years flailing around in IM, and if not for my stubbornness and conviction in striving to be a success in it, I'd have failed a long time ago. When you're in IM you're up against a lot of adversity - not only is the learning curve incredibly steep, there's so much information overload and distractions that it's almost a given that you'll be overwhelmed initially, and you probably have to face the disapproval of close friends and family as well. How you react to all that will determine whether you succeed or not.

This guiding quote provided inspiration to me in those hard times, and it continues to spur me on today. I think about how Churchill was addressing the boys at the Harrow school, and how they must have been scared witless at the beginning of the war. He was reminding them that they needed to stand up for what they believed in, and this almost certainly meant going to war for the older boys. This is the sort of attitude we need to adopt when approaching IM, it's not just a 'hobby' or an avocation. It's war out there, and if you're not mentally prepared for it, you'll be slaughtered! Too many people I talk to regard IM in the way I just described, and if you don't take it seriously you'll just flail around and wonder what happened 5 years later down the road. You really have to be serious and committed to succeed, and dismiss any and all distractions that come along the way. There is no 'boss' to guide or discipline you along the way, you have to be your own boss - that is probably the hardest thing to do of all, especially when you're just starting out.

Here's one of my latest favorites that I read somewhere online recently.

      The Formula For Success

"Would you like me to give you a formula for... success? It's quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. You're thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn't at all... you can be discouraged by failure / or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because, remember that's where you'll find success. On the far side."
--- Thomas J. Watson, Founder of IBM (1874-1956)

      Source

Such a true and logical mindset to have for any type of business, especially online.

In the old days of offline marketing, it could take months, or even years, to realize you failed. Thank God in today's digital age we can "fail" in a couple of days, or weeks, or a few months. Then we can lick our wounds, learn from our mistakes, and move on!

Life is hard if you live it the easy way,
Life is easy if you live it the hard way.

"easy way" simply means - yielding to instant gratification.

It is easy to eat burgers, sweets, ice-creams, etc. But in the long run you spoil your health.

It is easy to get something with a credit card, but in the long run you spoil your financial health.

It is easy to follow black hat methods and make some quick buck online, but you have to keep starting over and over again and you spoil your reputation in the long run.

"hard way" means self control, patience, long-sightedness, etc.

You can eat raw foods which is not so pleasant at first but you will have good health.

You can save your money and invest it on appreciating assets and have a lot of money in the long run.

You can build your reputation and online assets by being patient. Say, building an authoritative blog... hard at first, but easy for life.

I like to think there's no such thing as failure, just success in progress. From one of my favourite poems, 'Opportunity' by Walter Malone...

They do me wrong who say I come no more
When once I knock and fail to find you in,
For every day I stand outside your door
And bid you wake, and rise to fight and win.

Wail not for precious chances passed away,
Weep not for golden ages on the wane.
Each night I burn the records of the day,
At sunrise every soul is born again.

    To successes in progress everywhere

My favorite quote comes from my wife. She might not be well known or popular with anyone but me and her family, but it is the quote I look at every day..

    "Try and Try Until Success"

I use this to remind me, get busy, do the work, try new things, keep after it, and success happens.

I'm sure plenty of people have said these words, but she is my inspiration, and reminds me of those words on a regular basis.

I just remembered..I need to go give her another hug and kiss.

Thanks for this thread, it's really inspirational!

MizzCindy and Mark Andrews, those were great quotes, thanks. And all of the others

I love this quote by Noel Gallagher, band member of one of my favourite bands Oasis:

Everything's gonna be fine. Stay optimistic. If there are dark clouds coming up, they'll leave again. They always do. The world is round. Everything's round. The biggest invention of all times, the wheel is round. Things pass. Nothing will stay the same forever. No matter in how big a pile of s*** you've gotten yourself - be it financial problems, messed up relations etc...: you'll get over it. It'll go away just like the weather - Noel Gallagher

This quote really puts everything in order. No matter what mistakes or situations you've got yourself in, it will pass.

Relating it to IM.. no matter what mistakes or failures you experience, it's ok, part of the learning curve. Main part is to try whatever it is you want to do, that's the only way to progress in life.

I absolutely love the Churchill quotes, keep 'em coming!
My offering is: "no one got rich working for someone else" (various people, including my uncle)

Working for myself (IM or any other business) will give me the chance to one day not have to work at all.

I have also read that running your own business is the single best investment you can make and totally outperform and other asset class in the long term such as the stock market and real estate.

Another thing is that as our governments inflate our money supply (print money) a business gets an early grab on that extra freshly minted money. As an employee you will get it much later (if at all) through pay rises or having to change job to get a higher salary. Now that sucks!

"If you fail to plan, you plan to fail", always set your goals out clearly in front of you. The best way to do anything is to create a mindmap so that you can visually see each step of the process that you should take, take 30 minutes or so to create a mindmap and basically break down your goal into little bite size steps and do each one at a time.
