Is selling a turn key business THAT profitable?

Hello,

I've got a quick question and I'm looking for a bit of a consensus:

Would you purchase a turn key business?
i.e. Something you could purchase, upload to your server and immediately start profiting from?

The reason I ask is because I'm wondering if the majority of internet marketers are more interested in making their own businesses/sites or, since we love outsourcing everything, we'd just buy a turn key business.

Obviously I'm asking because I'm thinking about OFFERING one--so I'm just interested in opinions, etc. Have you ever bought a turn key business before? How much did you pay for it? Was it worth it?

  • If the buyer starts getting profit from day 1, yes people love to buy the business.

I didn't buy any, but I sold one. My hosting business. Because all customers pay money on recurrent basis, it was sold like gold.

    • Could you elaborate on this? How did that business model work exactly, how do you sell turn key hosting ? Thanks!

  • No, I wouldn't

In the past, when I have bought into them...the same "turn key" solution is sold to hundreds or thousands of people. So, in order to make myself stand out, I"ve had to tweak the templates, rewrite the content, and add extra so that my site/business was different from everyone elses.

Almost just like having to do all the work myself anyway...

    • I experienced this too with a few different ones. Thanks for the input
  • Yes, if the product was unique and in a profitable niche that I want to work in, I see no problem with it.

  • I used to have a turn key website at my former domain name, www.ryansjones.com (note I got rid of that website last summer), but did not have much luck in generating commissions with it. I also got a custom search engine via Acme People Search, and though I have gotten some sign ups and did generate a few leads at mylife, I haven't made a whole lot with it yet. The only issue I have with turn key websites is that they can be tricky to promote (of course, I am open to suggestions on how ot effectively promote them, such as the new Acme People search engine I have). Also, I've noticed that google frowns on those kinds of websites.

    • I'm planning on taking my turn key business model and putting it on ClickBank to get affiliates to promote the business itself, the cool thing is this isn't in the IM niche, so I feel there's actually way MORE potential in it. Thanks for the input so far, it's helping
  • It is actually impossible to sell a turn key business...

Unless its actually a Turn Key Business,

That means it has current customers, it has current product(s) / service(s)

    • Mark, if that's true, then there's no key to turn in the first place--so even THAT isn't a turn key business. Turn the key = send the traffic + profit
  • The problem is that a person is not going to sell it for any less then what the business is making every 1-2 years
