Why Does My Blogs Home Page Rank For All Of My Posts Keywords

I was just wondering if this was a good or bad thing, yes I'm ranking for the keywords I want but I would rather that the actual post would rank.

I only use snippets on the home page, is this normal of a blog or is there something I should be doing different?

I blog so I am very interested in your question, that is why I'm posting this. I don't understand your question. "Rank?" Keywords or post. What's the dif.

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

      George,

I think it's about the target URL of the google listing.

Google shows his blog root for the listings, but no deep links.
      That's how I understand it.

Personally I do not care too much what page google brings to the top, as long as it's my domain.

Advantage of getting traffic to the specific post is that it might be more targeted, advantage of getting people to the blog homepage is that I might give them a better introduction to my site there.

All I really care about is the traffic too Ralf but what happens when those posts fall off of the blogs home page, do I simply lose out on that traffic at this point?

It's not a stupid question George, I should have been more clear. I speaking in regards to ranking for certain keywords in Google, the blogs home page seems to be stealing all the glory from the actual post.

        Hi Wealthyclark,

It's possibly the snippet factor and the fact that your home page is the most frequently updated. Perhaps you have also got backlinks to the home page and not elsewhere. Perhaps the SEs are a little confused about what your site is about/the navigation set up.

You could try deep linking to inner posts (on site and off). You could try adding more keyword specific content to the inner posts. Double check your settings - are you using an SEO plugin? If so, is it configured correctly? If you have settings (like in platinum SEO plugin) that try to control 'ranking juice' using no follow, change them so that it is not holding all of the juice within the home page - allow it to flow to the inner posts freely.

For example, if the content on your inner posts was a bit weak in terms of keywords - IE if the SEs weren't absolutely sure about the subject of the posts, this might be contributing. And if you then found that your meta tags weren't set up properly or were putting the wrong information in there, this could be causing it. So just reverse these things and make sure that each post (or group of posts within a category) are tightly themed and it is absolutely clear to all what the themes are.

In general, make sure that the internal structure of the blog is set up and functioning correctly.

If you have a tag cloud, you could try removing it, in case it is contributing by showing all of your tags for all of the posts on every page.

Make sure the navigation from your home page is adequate and find as many ways as possible to steer your visitors from the home post to the kind of page that they are actually searching for.

Note - I'm not suggesting the above advice as absolute, just some suggestions to hopefully help you to think of a solution that will work.

Thanks for the attempt but I have triple checked all of this and don't see a problem. I haven't done anything with this blog that I haven't done with others and I build links to all my pages.

I think the home page maybe stronger than the others as far as juice goes so I'll wait it out a bit and see what happens.

You should be ranking for your inner page site!
Build more backlinks to your inner page and when your website is showing up for your inner page url. It will be much easier to grab your homepage up in the search engine as well.

At the end of the day, you will get both your homepage and inner page in the search engine result. 2 url
