You'll have to use some kind of graphics program to create it.
If you're just looking to avoid the cost of Photoshop I suggest
a free program called The Gimp.

Well, although the effect is quite good, for easy editing purpose, I would advise you to use old school CSS method to edit your headlines, rather than using graphic program to create image headlines.

The font is most likely myriad pro.

For future reference, there is a free tool online which will (usually very accurately) identify fonts in images for you: WhatTheFont : MyFonts

If you google "text graphics generator" you will find a few sites you can use free to create some different text/font images.

One I have used is cooltext.com

Hi guys

ive seen it been done quite a lot lately and have found that when i order graphics packs with a mini site many throw it in as a free bonus as long as you submit the headline graphic you want when you first place your order. So next time you order some graphics check out what you actually get.

Awwww my poor little headline being scrutinsed and pulled apart! Bryan was so close, but its actually just a 2 pixel stroke

Also there's a subtle black to white Gradient Overlay layer effect on there too, set to Overlay blending mode at 15% opacity.

Sarah, it might help if increase the drop shadow size slightly on yours, to say about 5 and have the distance at 2 or 3. Also try playing about with the tracking setting in your character palette, using a minus figure (try about -40) will pull the letters together and make a big difference!

Cool... That's what I usually do as well. Often a touch of Inner Glow set to a very light opacity as well to give a slight "sheen".

in the interest of saving the internet from terrible headline graphics, I've produced this AMAZING, FREE, multiple use greeting for your websites, save off the image and follow these simple instructions.

1. add the fantastic multi-greet headline to your site
2. make a note of the street address of every potential visitor to your site. (you might want to invest in some post-it-notes and a pack of biro's and a sharpie pen)
3. In the dead of night sneak into their houses, load up your website.
4. Scroll to your friendly message. (careful not to use the noisy scroll wheel on the mouse, this could potentially wake up the home owners)
5. Using your sharpie tick the appropriate greeting on the computer monitor.
6. Sit back and wait for numerous emails thanking you for your kind words!
