The insensitivity of internet marketers

As I have been forced to spend less and less time on line due to failing eye sight I have discovered that to many internet marketers my situation makes me ripe to be exploited.

A few of them have responded to some of my posts where I mention my dificulties by offering to help. When I accept the offers I sometimes suddenly find myself on the mailing lists of literally hundreds of biz-opp pushers (email processors, medicare records clerks, survey takers and the like).

At other times the offer of help might be couched in such convincing terms that I feel that here, at last, is a real person who wants to help. The only trouble is, I never hear from them again.

I am the first to admit that I need all the help I can get and I even asked for help in the WF recently - the first time, I think, that I have ever done that - fortunately warriors are more phlegmatic and either did not read my request or did not feel in a position to help so did not respond.

The real icing on the cake came when I received a call at 1am from someone in California (he said) claiming to be able to help me with no trouble at all and that he would not ask me for a single cent. Since he asked for 15 minutes of my time and was talking about one-on-one coaching I made sure that he knew I had absolutely no money.

After listening to about 12 minutes of a pitch that sounded quite interesting and appropriate I was 'handed off' to another pitcher. No hesitation with this guy - "Do you have a credit card or chequing account?" was his first question. Since I had neither, the offer of help evaporated.

It is not in my nature to ask for help. It is not in my nature to exploit people who ask for help. It is not in my nature to lie about what my services will cost.

I guess I'll never make an internet marketer.

Should I be thanking God that my failing sight is helping me to see some people more clearly?

It is really sad-sometimes what sounds too good to be true, really is. IM like pretty much everything else in this economy is ripe with scam artists and the like. We don't like to admit it, but there are plenty of bad apples.

    Best of luck to you!

Art, I'm sorry to hear about your failing sight, but I wish you'd stop blaming all the world's woes on internet marketers.

Humans have been exploiting humans for a fair while before the internet surfaced

Why not use this thread to reiterate what it is you need help with, for the benefit of those who may have missed your previous post(s)?

Well said Frank. Be clear about what you need help with.

Some people are insensitive and it's certainly not limited to internet marketers. There are many kindnesses exhibited on this forum and in life and it' seems unfair to paint all marketers with the same brush.

Had the same experience. Worst part is that before the conversation began I specifically asked "are you going to ask for my credit card number?". He was like "no-no".

Then came the next guy and started pitching me "leverage capital - I'm not asking you for YOUR money, but for your BANKS money" and then he heard me hang up

At least I learned something: "don't put your phone number inside of those sign up forms if you don't want telemarketers to call you"

What's the purpose of this thread? Are you asking for help? Or are you just being philosophical about people's morals?

I know that personally I don't have the time to mentor anyone. People used to ask me about how I make money from Adsense and I tried to help everyone but got so overwhelmed that I couldn't do my own work (all my coworkers and friends wanted me to teach them). So I just wrote it in some blog posts so any of them could read it. And sometimes I try to answer some questions from less advanced IMers here, but that's about all most of us can do. I helped my best friend learn to make money online, and that was pretty tiring, even though he's my best friend and he had lost his job. So I can't commit that kind of time and energy to strangers, even though I try to offer value here (and appreciate the help I get). I'm sure most of us are the same.

    I'm in the latter category.

Whenever someone asks "hey, could you help me?" - there's only one real answer. You say "yes" and you help. I don't know what kind of help I could offer. So I didn't say anything.

But I did read your thread, and if I knew how to help, I would.

It's ok, Art should be able to express himself. He's not exactly targeting anyone specific, he's just saying. In hardship it's natural to be extra sensitive about stuff.

    Thanks,

    Hey Art,

Sorry to hear about your sight problem. I can sort of relate to that but not 'really' when I get off my you know what and get some new glasses I probably have a few more good years of site. Not the same I know but at least for now I understand the frustration of poor eyesight.

What I do is grab my reading glasses and actually put them over my regular glasses. I look funny but then I can see. Also I increase the font size when possible.

Did you know that adobe reader has a reader in the view section. Click view and click read out loud. Many people don't know this even though it's been there for a while. Sounds like a robot but at least it works.

I hope you get to have some better experiences with some IMers. Many I know are really nice people.

Speaking of trying to sell people in time of sickness and sorrow, have you ever had to deal with a mortician in the time of sorrow, now that is an experience in "up sell." Not pleasant at all, for me at least. I don't mean to paint them all with the same brush and I've even met some caring ones but when you get a hold of a greedy one it is a very trialsome experience.

    I hope you feel better,

There's good and bad people in every walk of life, and in every industry.

Art, you said "I guess I'll never make an internet marketer", the first step is belief in yourself.

I'm really sorry that your eyesight isn't what it used to be, I can understand why this could be an obstacle for you, but it doesn't mean the end of your IM career before it's started.

Each of us, no matter who we are or where we've come from, have valuable information and skills, be it hobbies like fly-fishing or a life long career in accounting.

You Art, have highly valuable knowledge, just like the rest of us. Sharing this knowledge with people who want to know these skills can be an easy step into Internet marketing.

Don't give up Art, I think this is the best place on the web to find the help you need, for free.

    Hi Art,

Insensitivity is part of human nature friend. However. in this particular forum the vast majority of us are in the same boat and help if we can and in turn ask for help when we need it. no one has all the answers and friend no one is going to give you the keys, the car and drive it too. if you are in need of a mentor then you need to say that if you are in need of training then say that also. if you want someone to do your work for you good luck. i am one of the most sensitive people i know and i don't like being thrown into a generalized category this post was not a great way to speak your opinion in a forum where we all try to help one another and are pretty wise if someone is trying to scam or not. your failing eye sight did not effect you enough to write this post so i suggest you change your attitude and partake in the forum properly. ask for help when you need it and be specfic in what help you need. I myself do not have time at present to mentor or teach anyone i will be doing so in my own site and that is going to be trying and exhausting enough. but friend you are among friends here not users or misusers and those who come in here doing that we get after pretty quick. Your welcome here Art but don't cut us down ever. that is a good way to have us clam up .
This is THE forum for internet marketers and there is a reason for it.some of the best minds in the world are in this forum. be nice and you will get the help you need.

As for the company calling you i know who that is and that is their strategy. i got called from there to here in canada and listened to the same thing then listened to the"leverage"{ pitch shady marketing at it's best they thought i was hooked until i said i am already online but thanks for the info . don't be put off by that and don't group us together the fact is you can receive calls from telephone marketers etc but that doesn't stop you from using the phone so don't be so quick to throw us all together.

    Art,

Relax and read the posts in this thread. Everyone is helping you
by giving you honest, no bs feedback. Have you noticed that?

You can quit or continue. Entirely your call.

Or you can figure out a way to enable your self to read, or hear
    the words.

We all know how frustrating it can be, or is sometimes, to consistently
succeed at what we do. But so many people are consistently successful.
No reason why you cannot join them.

Perhaps you need to ask your self what you are willing to do to be successful.
If you have to jump through several more hoops to do it, ok. So what? You do
what you need to do. That applies to everyone.

I did read your post, and I felt like you were feeling sorry for your self. No big
deal because at one time or another everyone has done that. Even once, I'd
say. I've done it. I don't like to admit it, but I've done it. The difference is I
quickly realized what was going on and calibrated my brain on the fly. I stopped
feeling sorry for myself and got my ass in gear and moved ahead.

There is one person in this forum who helped me in a very huge way at a time
when I really was in a tough situation. This person did not give me money or
anything like that. We were not friends at the time. It was done, we spent some
time communicating through it, and afterwards we went our separate ways. That
person is still here and active.

I've helped a handful of people with lesser experience because I wanted to pay
it forward. I've seen other people in here offer to help others. Try something...

Think of a certain color or make/model of a car. Pick something. Focus on it
for a few minutes, remind your self of it during the day.

Now, what will happen is you will start noticing the thing you focused on. That is
a fact, Art. It will happen. It will seem like there are a lot of what ever kind of car,
or color of car, you focused on.

So what are you focusing on re your post? You see what I mean?

Make a conscious effort to redirect your thoughts from complaining to identifying
the issues and pinpointing solutions. How do you get from point A to point B. Then
do what you need to do to get to B.

Your first success is comprised of numerous objectives. Write them all out and start
    at the beginning.

    Ok?

    Take care.
