My programmer has disapeared.
I don't have the login or password to
my cpanel.

Is there a way to retrieve it or another way to
access it?

Or should I just grab my ankles?

Usually, for the main account the login info is the same as your webhost. And If not, your webhost can reset it for you.

Call your hosting company and explain the situation...I'm sure it's nothing they've not heard before! LOL

    Good luck!

I kind of depends who set up the hosting account, you or the programmer. If it was you, the hosting company will be able to help you. If not, it will be more complicated.

My programmer is the hosting company. (arrgh)

I have DNS so I can move it, but why, if I can't
      access it.

You have just learned a very valuable lesson my friend.

If you are buying a house, and letting some people do some construction work, you need to get the keys yourself so you can get in and see just what they are doing.

"gotta keep em separated" is the song that comes to mind.

        Good luck.

Did you buy from a reseller or something? Or did you buy a site from someone that came with 'free hosting?'

You don't keep back-ups? For future reference: create everything offline, then upload it. This way if your host shuts down you can get back up as fast as you can upload the back-up. If you had someone do this stuff for you, you should have them send copies of files and stuff to your e-mail (or upload it to a file sharing site if it's big).

I believe that's the first time I've ever seen advise on WF that amounts to.....hire a hacker. Geez, what a mess.

Chuck how big is the site? How much of it is public? I just ask because worst case scenario it has to get rebuilt if the hosting company is gone, the files may no longer be accessible.

So this is the one time that a hacker would come in handy.

Go to Elance and see if you can find any "Born Again" hackers.

lol ... born again hackers. Now I've heard everything.

What a mess of a situation to be in. Any reason he disappeared? Is his hosting still available or out of business?

Hello, have you tried to log in, and then when you get the error, click the forgot password? Maybe it can be sent to your email account.

Also try admin as the username (http://www.yoursite.com:2082), that is very common on cpanel. And it might be saved if you've set the site up with any ftp or design(dreamweaver etc)program.

Simplest way: Call the hosting company and tell them the situation

Fastest way: Hire a hacker, born again that is.

Aftermath: Hire programmer, get hosting all under different companies. Have backups.

Hacking, despite being illegal, is not usually they quickest way. If system is patched and setup to make brute forcing hard then it can take several months, if not years to get in.

Not sure where your programmer/hosting company is located, but if he is in the USA, call the Better Business Bureau, and the Chamber of Commerce in the area. I assume you know his name, and where he is from.

See if one of them would be willing to attempt to make a contact with him via phone.

As long as you have paid for all services he provided, he should at minimum provide you with a copy of the data.

It could be like the situation I had with another client, his developer also provided his hosting, but through a reseller account. He quit paying the hosting company, since he was headed into bankruptcy. The hosting company shut him off, effectively killing their number 1 rated website.

I helped him locate the actual hosting company, who was gracious enough to make a backup copy of his folder if he paid a percentage of the late fees, equal to his portion of the hosting. Which of course he was more than happy to do.

You may want to try to track your website down via IP address, and see if he is actually hosting it, or if he is just using a reseller account. If you check the ownership of the IP address, you may find out he is not truly hosting it. You may be able to contact the actual hosting company, and get access if you can provide proof it is your site.

    Worth a shot at least.

      Hi Chuck,

      what is your domain name?
does it come up? did you actually have a site up?
if it is there is an easy way to get all of your files just right click view source open note pad paste save as pagename i.e. index.html and viola your site is back for the images same thing right click save as and voila your images are back. i recommend using webhostingpad.com 3 yrs of hosting for around 70.00 free domain name and all you need including 24 /7 support(not affiliate) this is my hosting company i use and they are fantastic.

If you want you can pm me with your domain name and i can see if there is something that can be done but if your site is up follow the instructions above you don't need your c panel to get your site .

What a horrible thing and at this time of year too. where did you find this programmer?

    Nightmare!!

The same thing happened to me a couple of months back. Luckily I had a backup of all the websites as I have over 35 sites hosted. I got another host and it was just taking the time to upload again. I can never emphasise enough how important it is to make backups.

You could try the forget the password but that would be no use if your programmer has put his email add in.

Hopefully you have a backup and you can get back online quite quickly.

It would be easier to help if you specified what kind of site it is -- html, php, Wordpress, what? Would you just need pages from the site or more? Some applications can download lots of stuff from sites, no hacking required (it's kind of scary, really).

    Hi everybody,
I really appreciate your help and ideas.
I'll PM a couple of you.
A background, this is an html site that the programmer
made for me.(paid)He is in India, as is his servers.
I've had a 3 yr relationship with him and no problems.

I am stupid to be so naive". Learned a hard lesson.

I will find a "reformed" hacker. I'm determined to save it.

Yeah, get an old IE5.5 and 'file' > 'save site...' and snake the site. You get the whole thing in one fell swoop ready to upload to any other domain (Time is the biggest lose)

      Hi Chuck,

I ran a scan on the site and created a pdf containing a list of all the pages.

All you have to do is create a new folder on your desktop and then click
each page link in the pdf.

While you veiw each page save all the images then view the source code
for the page and save the code to the new file folder you've created.

At least you will then have your source data and images.

Was there a data base or was it a static html type site?

PM me if you would like my scanned data from the site.

      Have a Great Day!

Black Widow is a site ripper. Basically, it downloads all web accessible pages locally on your hard drive with all web structure intact.

Believe me, it's the best tool for what you need. And a lot cheaper than hiring a cracker. Just try the freeware, and see what I mean.

Ripping site only works for html. If any pages end in .php or .asp then it wont pull the code. Site rippers can't pull server side coding.
