Drawing customers in...

I have been thinking about this at work, and realized it could be a good subject matter for people to refer back to when they encounter this...:p

When we get a prospects e-mail address, either from a free ebook, newsletter subscription, etc...we aim to send them follow-up e-mails so that they will click through and see what we have to say(and optimally try to sell them our services).

How do you guys draw people into your e-mails through the SUBJECT LINE that is visible in their inbox?

For example, I have found it is very simple, but also very effective, to insert a "..." after anything I put in a subject line, such as ""Free E-Book Information..." or "Explosive Changes in the Marketplace..." (for futures newsletter.)

What are your guys' thoughts? Care to share any ideas that have worked for you?

An interesting title is MUCH more important than a gimmick like quotes or anything else...

I really like Ben Settle's emails... His title today was "World's Oldest Info Publishing Secret".

And the key is that his emails are actually worth reading. If that was the first email I'd ever got from him, I'm definitely opening it.

I'm in the info publishing business, so I definitely want to know the "World's Oldest Info Publishing Secret".

And then his content is always worth the read. That's just as critical. He's building a relationship with his subscribers. People want to read his emails.

And because people open his emails and dig his content, they're much more susceptible to at least consider buying whatever Ben happens to be selling.

That's the only "trick" to it. Captivating titles that get people curious enough to open, and then good content on a consistent basis.

If you can nail that part, assuming everything else is in place, the selling becomes almost effortless.

    Thanks Scott.

I have contemplating using a similar approach to the title you mentioned, but it is tough because the futures industry is so highly regulated and very strict on promotional materials. I always send prospects very valuable information, but at certain times it seems like the title to get them through to the information is very restricted.

For example, in general my company keeps our promotional materials very basic. We really can't use phrases such as "secret to success" or something along the lines of that because that could point to a guarantee, which is a HUGE infraction in the futures industry.

I sometimes just get frustrated with this fact that I cannot really let loose on marketing in this way. Not to say I would "guarantee anything" or something unethical like that, but I have just always wanted to get off the generic stuff!
