Make money from Amazon?

Hi

Just wondering if there's anyone out there that makes money selling Amazon products?

Would love to hear any success (or failure) stories and what you are (were) selling?

Cheers
Jemma

You can sell virtually anything with amazon, that's why it's great. The not so great part is the low commission compared to other affiliate programs. However, I know that there are plenty on this forum making money with amazon. A good way to do it is probably to set up a few niches sites such as a cooking site and sell cookbooks from amazon. Good luck.

I actually just set up a site and put one amazon widget on there to start with along with a few other ads from different affiliate programs, but have not start promoting it yet so can't tell you how well it works for me, yet.

I use Amazon and am doing quite well with it. It's great because they have great products and as long as you write relevant product reviews, you'll get a pretty good income out of it.

        Hi workathomeonline!
I'm not lucky. It take me a year to earn about $20. How do you do?
        Man thanks

Amazon has the oldest internet-only retail store brand and that is a big asset to boast. You can sell practically anything from consumer goods, CDs DVDs electronics, etc. As with most physical products, commissions tend to be low, however. Also, provided you reach the minimum commission threshold, your 1st payout will take around 2 months to come through.

What I like about amazon is that it allows you to customize the way you show their products in your blog/website, and has some terrific-looking widgets that convert very well. Have a browse in their affiliate section or astore and you can get the creatives, etc that you can then put in your blog.

I just started with the program myself. Not sure how I am going to promote it as I only joined to make money back on my own purchases from Amazon. I am also in another affiliate program with an extensive line of products to promote both in the same places may cause contradictions.
I was thinking of setting up another blog focusing on electronics and selling electronics from Amazon.

I think there are several folk that do really well with Amazon. I am gradually switching my sites from ebay over to amazon products. If you can find a good higher end product niche that is where it really pays.

I just started doing this on my blog just the other day.

I wrote a new post with actual content on it and I hyperlinked
a few items I mentioned in the post that can be purchased on amazon.

One was a copywriting book and another was the Flip Ultra HD.

You can get direct links to any product page in the marketplace.

They even give you amazon widgets, one of which I remember seeing
that gives you a search box that drops your cookie. Pretty slick.

Feel Free to check out how i casually slipped it in on my blog
    in my latest post

My blog's url is in my sig file.

While the commissions are small, it is some of the easiest money
    we will ever make.

And just like Brian Tracy says... "Everything Counts"

That Amazon revenue will pay for something

I actually heavily promote amazon products during specific months of the year. It works really well for me and make a good living just from this when i promote it.

The hardest part is making your first sales. Once you do that then you get to figure out all the techniques that actually work.
MArketing amazon requires slightly different tactical steps then making any other type of product. Agian this is based purely off my experience in the trenches. I am sure other more expereinced warriors may have different opionions and doing much better at this.

The cool thing about it is when i send people over to amazon, they are a conversion machine. Generally off season i could get a 2-3% conversion. Nothing great.

During peak season like November and December it goes as high as 20%/

Now that i have some real data on the products that convert and the sites that work i hope to ramp this up more significantly and hire a team to promote this next year.

I will share one tip that works. (Amazon + Hub Pages).

Right now i have at least 3500 views a day on MY HUB page lens for Christmas products that i direct directly to amazon.

The key is knowing how to do amazon long tail keyowrd research. It is very different than picking niches. I get the keywords directly from amazon itself.

Another quick tip - people who buy on amazon usually end up buying other products. So if you sell one product you immediately get 10 other producst that people buy at the same time.

These are all buyer keywords and products. These are gold.

Anyway it has taken me over 13 months to figure the details out and i would be happy to share them with you.

If you have specific questions in specific areas on marketing with amazon, i would be more than happy to answer them for you.

One caution. I have not found this to be an overnight success. I took me at least 4 months to making a few hundred bucks a day after i got started, so please dont give up even if you are not seeing results immediately

Great post, Neil V. Could you elaborate a bit of where you get the keywords from Amazon? Is there a way to check what keywords people are searching for on the site?

        Hi Hyaku man,

        I'm not Neil, but...

        a) type your keywords into the search box on Amazon, and watch the drop down box with the suggestions as you do so.

        b) also, scroll down on a product page and look for 'tags customers associate with this product'

Bear in mind that these two sources are different. For b), click the 'what's this' link just by the title and it explains how the tags work and where they come from.

        a) is more useful/accurate overall.

        .........

It's not Amazon but if you go to shopping.com and find the link right at the bottom of the page 'top searches', click on it and then click on one of the item names and it gives you the info.

You can definitly make money with Amazon. Those that say you cant are not going about it correctly. For example, if your site is based around a reverse phone lookup niche, and you through up an Amazon widget, it isnt going to work.

I tend to look for that low hanging fruit keyword. 1000-3000 searches per month. I then pick 4 or 5 additional keywords in the same niche. For example:

Round Desktop Lamps - would be the Main Keyword (would get the domain as well)

Then add 4 more closely related keywords:

          Rectangular Desktop Lamps
          Oval Desktop Lamps
          Computer Desktop Lamps
          Green Desktop Lamps

Write a separate 500 word article for each keyword and use text links to get them off of your site and onto Amazon.

Will that site get alot of traffic? No, but it is targeted traffic, easy to rank for, and also these are people looking to buy a Desktop Lamp.

          Rinse and repeat

There is a bit more to it but that really is the basics to get started.

One thing that I have noticed is that while the widgets look great, my best conversions really come from text links. Other might have different results but on my sites the text links are money.
In other words, have you had the same experience regarding text links vs widgets? Thanks.

I hope i am not high-jacking this tread in any way and want to be respectful to the original author so all i want to do is respond to a few questions that have come up.

Also, if there is interest i would happily do a live experiment and share a quick step by step method and watch the results live.

As i mentioned that i consistently do 3 figure days usually about 5 out of 12 months in the last year. The reason why it has not been the entire year is quite frankly have not promoted amazon products heavily during off peak season.
I am usually involved in affiliate marketing and promoting my own products.

Okay the best time for me is back to school time after the summer holidays. Two months are great.

        And oct,Nov, Dec is awesome.

Interestingly enough my best sales day. Not what you think which was cyber monday (although i did a four figure day - Thank you Zhu ZHu pets), but it was the day after cyber monday i.e tuesday.

It was insane. More people clicked on the cyber monday ads for amazon on tuesday. I was lazy and forgot to take them out, but hey they worked.

Please write that in your business journal for next year,

As for the keywords i go only for long tail keywords i.e. the exact product description from amazon.

I don't even bother with finding other keywords, ect. Take the exact products, include them in title tag, etc and hey it works. You will make sales.

People actually copy the url (the entire product description) and paste this in google. And when coupled with hub pages or your blog site, you will find your product pages ranking higher,

        The niches/products i select:
I don't have the time or inclination to do all the research etc, so i get them directly from amazon. Amazon tells you exactly what people want.

No they actually tell you exactly what people are buying. Why mess with that. they give this million dollar information free so go ahead and promote them.

Don't bother about competition especially when it comes to long tail keywords. You will get hits and sales.

As for next year, i have already started building sites for a few products that i would like to make a daily income for the entire year.

In fact, my blogs were heavily slapped by google in september of this year because according to google promoting amazon products on a web-site is considered a bridge page and they de-indexed me.

Thankfully i had my hub pages up and that worked. But i managed to get my blogs fixed up get them reindexed by google and they are working fine now.

One final tip as it is getting real late here is that google insights, the amazon tools, long tail product keywords and social media sites should be your best friend for amazon.

Oh and in the interest of disclosure here i do both content network banner ads and seo to drive leads to amazon.

And if you have more specific questions, please let me know how you like for me to respond directly on this thread or i can easily open up a new one to be respectful to the author here.

I hope you find this helpful

BTW , there is still time before Christmas and the amazon buying traffic is awesome so just do something.

Do you think you could share what you were doing wrong when all your blogs got slapped by google? And also what you did to fix them.

I have a feeling that I may have done some of the same things with 2 of my blogs and I can't figure out how to get them back:confused:

I have already changed much of the content so that it is unique, I have renamed my sitemap and I continue to promote it with seo, links etc.

any insights would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

basically i made a few tactical mistakes. Without even realizing it at the time i did not realize the way i was setting up my blog were against googles webmaster rules

To cut a long story short, after about 70-80 emails back and forth and months of waiting to get some feedback, google viewed my site as a bridge site to amazon.

From my understanding of what i hear them say, they rather have consumers buy directly from amazon instead of my site because my site had no extra value and was an affiliate site or a bridge site to amazon.

Initailly i made a few original posts and then a wordpress amazon autoplugin tool that took amazon content and based on the keyword posted that directly in my wordpress blog.

That was a big no for google. They wanted content that was deemed to give a user a good user experience.

The second reason why my site was slapped down was there were too many links pointing to amazon. Again this made it seem as i was a bridge page

So bottom line, you need to have more content on your blog and make your site look like a value added site rather than just a straighfoward amazon affiliate site.
You need links to be pointed to other sites other than just amazon.

Now i say all of this becasue blog was in a competitive niche and i was slapped. i have blogs in a less competitive niche and they rank well despite blatant amazon promotion. But i do not make as much money with it.

Who knows how the blogs are ranked and what is really going on. All i know is this, without unique quality content (not all but some posts)and diveristy of links inbound and outbound it is gong to be tough promoting amazon products.

Also, use amazon plugins that autopost content, you need to figure out ways to use this. Anyone claiming that you just load this plugin and make $100's of dollars is really not giving the full picture. You need to use this in conjuction with other methods, etc.

Finally my goal this year is to get away from creating too many sites with just links and amazon content.

I will promote amazon but they will be high qulity content and great user experience focusing on list building.

By the way there are a few workarounds to get your blogs ranking high even if you are using autoplugins and sending traffic directly to amazon with many amazon links. I have found this after a lot of trial and error but these things will only last a short while.

              Neil,

Thank you for giving such detailed advice and steps for making money from amazon. I've learned more from reading your posts than a lot of ebooks I've bought. You have done what a lot of ebooks could not do: provide detailed steps with actual experience. You're giving advice instead of just plain information, which makes all the difference.

              Again, thank you.

basically i made a few tactical mistakes.

My approach has been to add original content in the first and last paragraph and in between putting customer reviews in my own words. I use text links (1 or 2) in the body of the article ... hope this does not get my site de-indexed.

Thank you, Neil, for the insights and details about your experience with promoting physical products on Amazon.

Can you offer any help about adding an Amazon affiliate link to your HubPages? Did you use the actual link or did you cloak it? I tried doing that and they [HubPages] put my account on suspension until I removed the links. I'd like to save others here the time and frustration so they don't get their HubPage temporarily suspended.

Would you share your wisdom with us?

      Thanks.

I generally use anchor text links and sometimes links within pictures themselves and make them clickable links.

Generally speaking i tell me clients exactly what to do. Click here to get this product for free shipping or click here now to buy at 15% off the retail etc.
And then i would anchor text the word click here or what makes sense in the situation

I am not afraid to tell them to click here to buy.

Also, i never had problems with using the actual link. I generally stay away from cloacking the link but am testing some pages recently with cloaked links but don't pay too much attention to it.

There are many reasons why your pages will get suspended other than the links.

You could have more than two links. They only allow two links so that could be one reason your page is suspended.

Hub pages are generally quite strict when you get started. I had this happen to me a lot when i first started using this.

here is another tip. Open a hub pages account. First post any two pages of content, it could be on any topic/ Don't point any links out. Leave this for a few days, you account will build some credibility and they think you are not a spammer.

Then post your amazon product review as a third post with your two links. ONce you get credibility you are good to go.

I hope this helps. If you account is still suspended, send me a pm and i will take a look for you and see what you need to do to improve this

Do a search here for a forum member called Dan Brock, he has an amazon teaching course that is probably the best I've seen. It coaches you through the steps to making bucks with a do this, now do this, etc approach.I'm not making $ yet but this is the first course that doesn't just gloss over crucial steps that I've found, so I've learned a lot, fast, and fairly pain free too, cheers Roger

Yup I've had success but unlike Neil my success literally was overnight. I am using super laser focused websites that rely solely on holiday traffic though. For anything else, I'm sure Neil is absolutely right that it takes time to make it work. And my sites will probably only net a very few sales after Christmas so it's a short term thing whereas a long term approach is definitely going to take longer.

My keys to making it work included having more than one site and having each site feature one single product. Some products don't convert at all, some convert at a high rate. I did use a very low cost PPC campaign (around $2 for every $100 earned) and that helped with highly targeted traffic.

There are a few things I really like about Amazon as opposed to info products or even other physical products through CJ etc. One is that the commission is tiered and it's really easy to get from the bottom level of 4% to something like 7%+. Another thing I like is that people tend to buy more than one thing so you get credit for whatever you're promoting plus whatever else people put into their carts (and sometimes it's nicely valued stuff like computers!). Finally people see Amazon and they trust it. A lot of people don't trust online sites but Amazon is a super trusted name and people are eager to buy from them making your job a heck of a lot easier.

My personal experience with Amazon is not the best. I too added to my site as a secondary source of income, so that considered it was never going to be a huge earner, but the conversion on it is so bad it earns peanuts, and small ones at that.

I have about 10 Amazon site earners and they do nicely for me.

Between the $50-$100/m range for each site.

You need to target higher priced items with a lot of search traffic for it to be worthwhile.

    Those niches do exist though.

Amazon is a great affiliate program. Its great for beginners as it easy to make sales and will give you the confidence and skills needed if you want to eventually go full time in affiliate marketing.

Its also great for advanced marketers as its easy to scale up and make a good income from Amazon.

Read Neil's reply a couple of times, he's got some great info in it.

I've had most success targeting visitors that are "ready to buy." I think a lot of Amazon affiliates make the mistake of creating sites that provide good info about a large niche (hi-def TV's for example) and placing links to Amazon from their site. But, they get disappointed when they don't make many sales. That's because they are targeting info-seekers and not visitors that are ready to buy.

Try to go a little deeper like targeting certain size hi-def TV's (to follow the above example) or even certain models and your conversion rate will go up. This will also help you rank higher in the SERPs.

Also, read and become familiar with their operating agreement (TOS). Buying from yourself is not allowed as was mentioned earlier in this thread.

You can make money with Amazon selling high end and low end products. There is no "one method" for Amazon.

To say you'll only make money during the Holidays is laughable. People buy from Amazon all year. Maybe you'll make a few more sales(maybe not) but you can make money with Amazon all year round.

If people are buying it on Amazon, you can make money from it. A company like Amazon would NOT invest so much into their affiliate program if it was not working.

I've heard that Amazon do weed out the purchases you buy for yourself through your own affiliate links. I think they initially credit you with the sale and then deduct it the next day.

One thing worth remembering is that the comission levels rise with the number of items you sell, not the monetary value of your sales, so it can be useful to include low ticket items in your mix. It only takes selling a handful of these to push the comission gained from selling the big TV into the next level.

The Amazon affiliate program has been pretty good to me, although I've been woefully neglectful in return and would no doubt do much better if I ever got round to doing much in the way of promoting the sites I use it on. Sadly, you can get everything on Amazon except a sixty hour day

One thing that I have noticed is that while the widgets look great, my best conversions really come from text links. Other might have different results but on my sites the text links are money.

I usually try to make niche sites based around products in the $50-$300 range. I have found that when people are looking for high dollar items (HDTV's for example) that they tend to shop from site to site. If Amazon has the lowest price, they come back but most of the time it is after the 24 hour cookie expires so Im out of luck. People seem to buy right away on tems priced in th $50-$300 range.

On a side note, I do have a seasonal niche site that promotes $2500-$8000 items. I have actually made a few sales from that one over the last couple months. It is real motivating when someone buys a $3000 item and you get 7%.

I've had the same experience, in that widgets haven't done well for me at all. I think a part of it is that they are virtually a neon sign that says "THIS IS AN AFFILIATE SITE". It gets people's anti-advertising-onslaught barriers up. Subtlety is much better. A text link to a relevant product in a well written post has worked best for me.

One other method that has also worked well for me is the Amazon Product in a Post Plugin for Wordpress. Once installed, you just need to add a little shortcode to your posts along with the product ASIN and it puts a really nice looking formatted product placement for you. Here's the link: WordPress › Amazon Product In a Post Plugin WordPress Plugins

And here's how it formats the products:

I think also that the thing to know about Amazon is it takes time to build up. As you build links you'll see your income steadily increases and usually doesn't drop off. If you constantly build links to Amazon as a kind of part time or side project, you'll see the results. It's not a fast earner, but it is steady.

            Hi.

Amazon is great...but alas! Alack! If you live in Colorado, you can't be an affiliate for Amazon.

Amazon drew a line in the sand a couple of weeks ago to challenge states in the US who are trying to force payment of sales and use taxes for Internet commerce. Amazon is making the Colorado law (which just went into effect) an example. They just pulled the plug on all affiliates. Created quite a brewhaha (sp?) in the local media. Most of the stories in the media didn't really explain the problem at all. Just left a lot of question marks.

Anyway, even though I live in Colorado, I'm glad Amazon did it. The state legislatures are so desperate for funds that they are looking to tax Internet commerce. This will set an important precedent for other states.

I am very new to this stuff, but on my first blog amazon is the first link I put simply because it has such a towering reputation above all other online stores..

If people recognise and trust the symbol and name so they will buy from it far more often than some obscure back street alley shack.

Yes, the commission may be crap on paper but would you prefer a commission rate of 30% with few to no sales from a company with no kind of brand awareness or a commission rate of 5% with 50+ sales from one of those sites that absolutely everyone has heard of and trusts? (for the most part lol)

You don't need thousands of visitors a day to make a conversion if your traffic is targeted

Not true! My sites have way less than 1000s of people daily but I get sales. It's because the people visiting are the right people. The people who want to buy and everything on my pages is designed to get people to go on Amazon and buy. Conversion rates with Amazon tend to be very high compared to info products. I started out with a conversion rate in the single digits a few weeks ago and for the past few days I've had conversion rates as a whole across sites of around 20%. Admittedly some sites do not convert while others convert like crazy.

I'm brand new to IM and I have made about $1000 in the past 9 days from the Amazon affiliate program. Meanwhile my site that sells an info product has made me a grand total of $0 in the past month.

I've made money with Amazon and the conversion rates are pretty high, compared to some info products.

You have to be careful when you choose products to promote. I've had some web-sites that were getting a lot of traffic, but nobody was buying. It's because the item is so large that it costs a fortune to be shipped.

A lot of people shop ONLINE for things like books, dvds etc but shop 'OFF-LINE' for things like furniture etc. That is why you have to ask yourself "would a person look for something like this online?" or you may end up wasting time.

1 tip: pet products sell pretty well on Amazon

Ildarius, YOUR POST IS TOTALLY NOT TRUE.

I have a website with 25 pages dedicated to selling furniture online for 1 affiliate program. I will not get into commissions but you are SADLY MISTAKEN. I've sold $1200 roll top desks online. That's just to name 1 item.

It has more to do with how you present the product than the product itself and in most cases it's the affiliate that SUCKS not the product or the program.

Have you ever heard of hayneedle.com( I'm a happy affiliate)?

That's a massive furniture website. Businesses like Hayneedle do not invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in a website like that with a PRIMARY customer base online and it flops.

I don't know where you got your "logic" from but you my friend are 100% WRONG.

Just to add, my buddy is in a Automobile affiliate program and he just made a sale for a $16,000 Hyundai car..ONLINE

I'll be totally honest and say one reason why I take what I read on the WF with a grain of salt is because there are to many people on here that do not know what the hell they are talking about. If you don't know, shut the hell up.

lol, do you need a hug or something? Cause it looks like you got a lot of frustration in your life...

I am not going to start showing you all of the affiliate pages which were dedicated to the most expensive items found on Amazon (many of them being furniture), but I will tell you that I have a couple of dozen of them and results were not great. An item like "Uharmony Massage Chair" did not sell a single unit after getting a LOT of laser targeted organic hits.

This is my personal experience so please take it anyway you want, grain of salt or not. I do conduit method marketing and ask people that know me, I DO get good results with items which are expected to be sold online, but certain items, such as large furtniture does not sell too well.

One thing that I will tell you is that toxic posts such as yours belong in places such as "Wicked Fire", so please let's try to keep a 'troll free' environment on the WF. This forum is a breath of fresh air compared to some other online "communities" out there.

      Thanks for this great tip!

I have one of these sites and it sits on the front page of Google and although it gets great traffic, no conversions. And yes, it is a larger item with a heavier shipping weight so will definitely keep that in mind when choosing which items to promote.

I was doing ok for a while by doing ppc ads for certain products or for a category. Then Amazon changed the rules so that was not allowed anymore. Have not really tried to sell much since then with them.

But I know some people doing really well with it by creating review sites etc.. or articles.

One bad thing about Amazon is having a niche site on something that is popular right now.

Bad thing is Amazon is your competitor in the serp's.
Do a search for that product and Amazon has the first several spots for most of the good keywords.

Need to find that rare sweet keyword that Amazon isn't using!

Amazon isn't really your competitor. People searching for those products have already came off the Amazon site, so they won't revisit it until they are ready to buy.

Amazon is also easy to outrank. I outrank them on number of occasions.

Actually, I love seeing my site outrank Amazon...that's the fun part. Many times, Amazon's titles do not cater to the lesser searched for terms, which is great for us...those are them truly golden nuggets

Trying to compete directly with them? Yeah, that would not be a good way to go...

I do quite well with amazon in the holiday season. They do not use paypal, but depend on direct deposit into your checking account. This is great because they have a mountain of gift products. Unlike sadsense you do not live in fear of having your account suddenly terminated because a friend clicks on one of your ads. If your friends buy amazon products everybody is happy, and then some.

        Hi Kezz/Allen,

Thanks again but either I am missing the obvious, or someone else is. I'll try again, breaking it right down. Also Neil - if you could answer, that would be appreciated,as it was you that said it originally.

The original sentence (with bolding for emphasis)-

They then tell you how long it has been in that position, the numbers of days in the top 100 and whether the product sales is trending up or down.
Here are the three statements from the original sentence.

        1. They then tell you how long it has been in that position

        2. the numbers of days in the top 100

        3. whether the product sales is trending up or down

        So therefore -

        3 = the coloured arrow

2 = the number of days in the top 100

1 = the one I am asking about, because I can't locate this information.

        Allen said -

When I clicked on that link, each item listed had a small line of text next to the item number with a red or green arrow and 'xxx days in the top 100'
Yep, that's 3 & 2. It's 1 I'd love to know about - if it actually exists, and if so, where? Many thanks.

I suspect that Neil didn't mean to type it that way, as I've never seen that either.

The other information (number of days in top 100, and the trend arrow) have been there, but I've never seen it show how long it's been in that position.

For clarity, I think what Roger (ExRat) means is that there's nothing that says the product has been at #4 in the top 100 for 46 days, for example.

By the way Neil, thanks for the info and I have found your new thread on this as well.

Sorry about the confusion mate. I actually meant the no of days it has been in the top 100 not in that position

          Thanks Jason for clarifying.

Actually i have my own spreadsheet that tells me how long the item has been in a specific position and how long it has been there,

It is not all the products but only the products that are rising in the besteller list per my criteria above.

By the way, i do not do this myself. I have an oustsource who spends 2 hours a day going through this and giving me the analysis,

I just use it for trend spotting and things i want to focus on.

BTW, the no of days in the top 100 is istelf is really good data to get started on,

Sorry about the confusion. That is what happens when you post late at night after a few beers.

Again this is one keyword method and is the easiest and works, i also have a few others that is going to knock your socks off. Will post them in a new thread i started and if i can i will post them here as well.

Lots more experiements and results to share.

I forgot to mention how to pick products to sell i.e. niche research for amazon.

I use three methods and i am going to reveal the first one tonight,

You may think it is so easy, it can't work, but am only only revealing what works from my perspective and it makes me money. this is not theoritical but gets me $$$ in my account.

Okay so method 1 to pick product.

Use the amazon bestsellers in each product category.

    here is my little system

Amazon lists the top 100 bestsellers in each product category from the number to 100 item in order. These are products that are selling

They then tell you how long it has been in that position, the numbers of days in the top 100 and whether the product sales is trending up or down.

Generally speaking when i look on the first page of amazon for a product bestseller i am looking for a product that has shot to the top quickly and taken the fewest days to get there.

So lets a product appears on number 11 spot and only been in the top 100 bestseller positing for 49 days, then what this tells me is that this is a hot product.

You will see that items appear in the top 100 spot for hundreds of days and my rule of thumb is as follows
is it in the top 20 spots for less than a 100 days and is the trend going up.

The reason i wnat this below 100 days is i know that it has more potential to go up and this product will sell for a longer time. If the product has been in the top spots for 400 days then it may not be popular or hot and it is a short term sale.

Remember this is actual sales information. This information represent products that are buying phrases and amazon is making money off them

Again this is just a rule of thumb. sometimes if i have a gut feel and validate this product in different ways, then i may break the rules to test this out.

I watch the trend closely every days across all categories and watch for the rising bestsellers that are new and could be in the bestseller list for a long time.
Oh, and you can pay someone in elance $3 a day to do this research for you and email to you. This is killer information to promote and associate info product as well.

However i strongly recommend you start doing this yourself as you will get a gut instict for the market.
step 2 - i write a quick product description on social media page for that keyword, hub pages are my favorite. throw it up and watch it. maybe build a few backlinks (20-30)and see the traffic and sales.

Nothing heavy just a few hours of work, If it sells and i make a sale or two., game on.

If not i go onto to other amazon products,

I used to do this is the past...create a nice blog, pick products, do everything right waste my time etc and no sales. That was dumb of me. It is like buying a ferrari with a stick shift but i only drive an automatic car. what a waste.

My philosophy now. if it does not convert to sales first why waste any time on it. test it if it makes money then promote.

Remember amazon products that we are promoting are already hot products. i dont need to convince anyone to buy this (though i have a specific method), so if people find my page and this product it should make a few sales on its own before i do heavy lifting

Anyway once you understand how to read and apply this data, keyword research the amazon way is sooooo much easier.

I will share more tactics later on.

P.S i really dont know how to include screen shots etc so this may not make sense right now. If anyone is kind enough to show me how to insert this, i could make a much more visual post. But i hope you get this method.
    take care
    Neil

I found it funny the other day when I heard someone refer to Affiliate Marketing as a scam. I asked "How do you like Amazon?" he said he loves it and orders most of his books from there. lol I said "Well, you may have been scammed then since Amazon uses affiliate marketing." ;-)

Back to the topic though, You can definitly make money with Amazon but you need to know what you are doing. And as mentioned before in this thread the greatest part is that all purchases count. I one time tweeted about some free mp3 downloads. I did so with my affiliate link, not one person bought any music. But a cooking set was bought, some books, and an mp3 player.

      Hi Neil,

They then tell you how long it has been in that position, the numbers of days in the top 100 and whether the product sales is trending up or down.
Where do you find the first bit of info please - IE - how long it's been in that position?

Take the exact products, include them in title tag, etc and hey it works. You will make sales.

People actually copy the url (the entire product description) and paste this in google. And when coupled with hub pages or your blog site, you will find your product pages ranking higher
I actually find that I get much better rankings by altering the product title. It appears that mirroring the full title may set off a flag, possibly because of all of the lazy autoblogger plugins that copy the title.

      Hi Ron,

      Thanks.

I only made like $8 bucks though off of all 3 items.... one of which was a 3rd party sale from amazon... the biggest sale I made though was the $80 one , which i think I made 2-4 bucks off it .... not alot but I think If I tried i could make a decent income off amazon

You are right. On occassion i find there are a few products that dont list the no of days in top 100. These are few and far between.

In that case i watch the trends. They are either new or something is going on with amazons system.

Think of it this way, before you build a site, ect you want to know if a product makes you sales first. One way is to do ppc testing before you actually build a site and start promoting.

So instead of ppc i use HUb pages. I test a few products in the category. If it is working - meaning i make sales then i biuld a blog.

My next step is seo, linkbuilding article marketing, forum profile posting and other heavy seo strategies. I dont do all of this unless i test first

I only build blogs after i test. So i hope i answered you question of whether to use hub or go the blog route. You do need the blogs to build a long term business

I was going to ask about that so thanks for the clarification I've only sold my own products on Amazon before and the profit margin was not worth it. Of course that was probably because I was selling used books. Promoting products as an affiliate seems like a better idea. I've never done affiliate marketing before so I'm going to follow your advice and try a hub page to test for conversions.

Quick question: After making sales you build a blog. Do you have a favorite blogging platform?

Thanks Neil for your reply. I usually just go ahead and build a wordpress blog hosted on a keyword rich domain. I am now focusin on Amazon and i am wondering. Are you building bigger niche sites?

Meaning, if your hub was on a Panasonic Model 12345, would you do a site on that keyword you tested or on something broader and then add that keyword as a post?

        Ron,

It sounds to me like you are the Google engineer with your explanation of the sandbox issue, etc

Just to clarify my position on this. I never said I was the expert on this issues, I can only share what has happened to my sites and give the results. If it helps then great if not then please don't take my word for it.

Also I am doing my best not to work from theory here. I want to share what's happened and my experience so others do not waste time and get to where they need much faster.

So here is what happened. I found a product to test, made some money built a site. Then created a blog and had this blog up for over 4 months and doing some seo work, etc to get it to top place and keep it ranking.

Then one day this product became hot. Lots more competition and more pages. I was ranking just behind amazon on page one. Going along nicely and trying to overtake them.

Then out of nowhere it dissappered.

No reason at all. All I was doing is adding more content from amazon with automated tools and more linking etc on this blog.

The site never did come back so I took it upon myself to contact google and see what was going on. At that time they have live chat but now if you believe something is wrong with your website and ranking you can send google emails.

You can go directly to google webmaster tools, and there is section in there when you can send in your questions about your site and get a response back. I will find the link and send this later.

Anyway, I explained what happened in an email and they sent me a response back. According to the email my site was considered a "bridge page" to amazon. This is per their email.

I never said I was a google engineer or knowing anything about sandbox, etc. All I can share was the response I got back from them.

Since my site was a bridge page, from their correspondence and back and forth after 20 emails, I finally came to the conclusion with some help that my site was offering no additional value and essentially offering the same information as amazon in a slightly different manner.

This according to them was adding no value to the user experience. And I hope you know googles stance on affiliate marketing now. From what I see they want better sites than traditional squeeze and landing pages and similar product posts to original merchant site.

So based on this information I had to go back and tell them exactly what I had done to change my site to give a better user experience. You know google and the correspondence from them .. they will never give you specific information. They will give you high level stuff for you to figure out on your own

Then I took every single one of their guidelines and responded to this and changed my site.

Eventually I pulled out all the automated posts, rewrote them, added more content to create a unique experience, point a few links out to good neighborhoods not only amazon (this is a key nugget of information right here), etc, etc to get my blog indexed again and finally ranking for the position I needed it to be.

It was worth the exercise for me because I wanted to do it the right way so I can learn going forward.

Just to clarify I have nothing against using automated tools. I have to use them to scale my business, I use this adding in some of my own information and tweaks so they work for me.

As far as the sandbox and viral content on high PR sites, ect I cannot speak to that with any authority what so ever and now am staying away from drawing inference from big sites and saying if XXX happens then logically speaking this will happen to my site.

I can only control what happens to me, making detail records of my results and fixing and tweaking as I move along.

I will say I have some old site with autoposted content that I still use that ranks high but generally speaking those sites only make a few bucks every month.

I fully acknowledge that different affiliate will have varied experiences.

As for the google sandbox issue, I don't even worry about it. I don't care anymore. I test, build sites, have an seo plan, some work some don't and make good money with this.

All I can say is this, when you are making good money on a sites, spent hours testing, finding products to promote and all of a sudden there is no money the next day...
..Man that freeking sucks big time. You sit and wonder whether it is worth while moving forward with that niche and products.

But that said, it is all part of the game and if you feel that your theory is the best course of action and works, then more power to you.

All I can say is this is my approach, Make money first, then automate and use all the scrapers and automated post plugin tools etc and test them out. Put them on sites you don't make you daily bread and milk money from, and if they work, then go for it, ramp and scale it up.

Don't use tools for the sake of it. Go in with the mindset of knowing something could not work but you can figure it out and make it work.

Anyway that's my rant for today. Maybe you may find this useful.

        Take care
        Neil

P.S There was one thing that i do with all my blogs going forward to reduce the chance of getting de-indexed. I stumbled across this by mistake and it seems to be working. I will share this in my main amazon treads so if you can also follow along there to learn more about my strategies and philosophies to make more with amazon

Amzon is still a great money maker. Because of it's low commission (4-6.5%) it is often overlooked by today's CPA / Affiliate marketers.

However, being the second largest e-commerce store in the USA / worldwide there is a lot of potential.

It all depends whether you find your niche, deliver some unique content together with a "store like" feel. We use our own program to find those niches and scrape Amazon's data and WFReview to import the product listings into WP. To keep the product information (mainly price) updated we use PhpZon (great tool).

Amazons nice and easy to promote with SEO, I like building stores for it mainly because people buy so many other things after they click through your site. It's amazing to me sometimes what people will buy - that isn't what I sent them there for.

I dont use Amazon Autoposter but rather WP-Robot. I have it on 5 or 6 of my sites and all but 1 rank on the first page of google. As stated on one of my earlier posts, I do put up a lot of original content on my blogs so that probably has a lot to do with me indexing well.

One thing that I noticed is that autoblogs have become popular lately. While my blogs could technically be considered autoblogs, I just haven't had much luck with throwing one up and forgetting about it. Thats why the 5 pages of original content work for me.

I agree with your observations. I do think that original content is needed if you are using automated posting tools. It makes the blog more unique.

I now take this one step further and add some unique content to each auto post so that i dont get sandboxed again/ Just a few extra lines at the beginning of each post.

I will share a case study later on this topic and what are some of the pitfalls to avoid. There is a lot to be considered when using an autoposting tool

          Neil,

I and others certainly appreciate your information that you've provided BUT one issue you're mentioning is the ALLEGED Google sandbox filter, all of which no one knows if it exists or not......unless of course you work at Google with the engineers.

You stated in one post you were "sandboxed" because of automatic tools and now you state you add original content so you will not get "sandboxedc" again.

If it does exist, it's not because of tools and scraped content.

The "sandbox" is thought to be a probation period for NEW websites that are seeking high rankings in highly competitive niches.

Sites targeting non-competitive keywords and phrases are often left out of the "sandbox" as there is little point in applying the filter. Not always the case but that's the way the ALLEGED Google sandbox works. It has nothing to do with your content or tools. Of course, it does not mean you should not add good content. That's another story.

Take a site like BNet..........which is mostly all pulled(scraped) content from various news and business outlets......it has a PR of 8 and Alexa of 2909 for what it's worth.

Think about all the news and gossip sites that have posted THE SAME articles from the Associated Press as it relates to the recent Tiger Woods situation. I can bet those sites WILL NOT get "sandboxed" due to posting the same articles.

Automated tools and viral content have nothing to do with the ALLEGED Google sandbox.

          Ron

The success neil has make me feel like going with amazon again, but past experience held me back.

i had used amazon affiliate program, but not to a lot of success, only a $0.54 mug sales. Mainly because of the amazon 24 hour cookies, i remove amazon and put adsense instead.

From my point of view, not everyone gather's their buying decision within 24 hours, and if they purchase after 24 hours, there goes my earning.

Don't mind me asking this newbie question, but for you all, how how you do all get the buyers to have the impulse feeling to purchase?

Or any advice for an amazon newbie?

You'll find that adsense pays virtually nothing unless the clicker performs a positive action on the paying site - therefore the same problem exists.

You can just copy the HTML Text to your Lens or whatever you use. But be sure to change to the HTML editor before.
Another possibility is to only copy your refer link out of the HTML text. Then you can make a hyperlink in your Lens.

Not only does Amazon have low commissions, they can "fire" you for any reason. Just ask any ex-affiliate from Colorado, North Carolina, and (I can't remember what other state). Amazon did a mass firing because they were mad at the state we live in.

Seemed a bit childish to me.

Amazon's affiliate program was the first I ever joined, and it was back in 1997 or 1998.

Since then, we've gotten amazon.co.uk and amazon.fr and amazon.de and many others.

I have different usernames on the different Amazon sites. Have any of you figured out a way to catch buyers from either England, US, Australia, Germany, and France, or do I miss the opportunity of making income, if I promote a think on Amazon.com, and my visitor is from England?
