Anyone That Says Scarcity Doesn't Work - IS WRONG!

So, I've been dealing with a "custody issue" that I've finally realized requires an attorney to handle...

I mean, this crap has run me ragged for weeks now...

I spend the day talking to a couple of them and finally come across one that I feel comfortable with. After about 45 minutes he says:

"We really need to get started right away, but in order to do that, I require a $3,000 retainer"

I look at him and tell him that I had 2 more appointments and that I would give him a call...

So, he gets up, shakes my hand and says:

"If I hear back from you, you'll be the last client I take until Feb. 1 probably. I only carry 5 clients at a time and I currently have 4"

So....

He heard back from me 10 minutes later cash in hand - because that is how long it took me to get to the bank and back lol

I never really thought how scarcity is actually used in so many "real world" situations, until I was kind of anyalyzing how he closed me while I was driving home.

It's everywhere

For sure scarcity works. We live in a society where we want to be the greatest have the one of the kind item etc, so when we are afraid we will miss our chance because of a scarcity factor, of course we will jump all over it.

The foreshadowing of regret is almost intolerable. That's the key to scarcity. Help them paint a mental picture of the pain they'll feel if they "miss out" (while the clock is ticking of course).

I assume this guy did it almost effortlessly for a few reasons...

      1. He specializes in custody law
      2. His limit of 5 makes him appear intensely focused
      3. An intensely focused specialist = high chance of desired outcome

Anyway, best wishes for resolving your issues.

Yep, as long as he's telling the truth, it's good for you. Hope he's worth it and does the job you need!

Scarcity is one of the main techniques taught to salesmen, and you see it all the time. If it didnt' work, they wouldn't keep doing it, right?

The only problem is if you use it too obviously or use it just as a sales technique such as by saying, "This is the last copy of this ebook to be sold!" when in reality you never plan to limit the sale.

Use selling techniques, fine, but be honest about it.

Haha... I hate the feeling of driving home and then suddenly realizing that you got CLOSED on! haha.

Good stuff to learn by though.

Oh sure. Car guys do this all the time too. My father-in-law's an F&I guy for a big dealership near Dallas. They're always pushing people off the fence by creating false scarcity about the financing and such. For all you know, you were that lawyer's only client on the horizon, but he used good psychology. Or he might have been completely up front. Never know with lawyers. Or car guys.

There's always that dreaded "Last order!" at the pub. That sure gets the wallet out quick.

I heard that. When I hear "last call" here in Los Angeles, the OC, or San Diego, I send the girlfriend to go wait in line to buy us some drinks......

Nah, I brew my own stuff that would put the 'bucks to shame! lol

@ Jeremy, scarcity definitely works. When I see a famous DJ come into town that doesn't come around very often, I know the tickets are either going to sell out or become more costly if I sit on my ass. So I buy them right there on the spot. I learned the hard way that waiting only ends up costing me more money.

Ugh, man, sorry to hear you're going through this. Never been through it myself, but have had enough friends go through it to not wish it on anyone.

Glad that you got some marketing value out of the situation, though. LOL.

    Jeremy,

You should have called his bluff!!

Maybe the FTC should make new compliance laws against the use of scarcity. LOL

    wish you all best Jeremy.

Back about what 12 years i suppose. my parents had an ugly divorce and custody battle for me and my sister. It involved domestic voilence,so partly in favour to us. Plus he stuffed up by not attending 'custody meetings' where he was allowed supervised access to us. Talk about nerve wracking.
In the end mum got a rare court order that evidently only 1% of cases in australia get the ruling (thats how serious the case was) that he lost total custody and has no rights to see us,plus restraining order. Me and my sister didn't wish to see him. and havent seen him since around 1998. I wouldn't know if he is alive or not.

    My advice..
attend all meetings on time. especially when there are arranged visits to see your kids. Any missed visits is a black mark against you.

ps: thanks for reminding me about scarcity

Yes, for sure scarcity is one of the strongest marketing tactics.
You can sometime sell a product on just scarcity ALONE without
even talking about the benefits of the product.

"You in fact have 3 days left and the price goes to $97!"

Get it before the price goes up.

It's human nature... nobody wants to miss out on something which will solve their problems. It works, and will always work.

    Kindest regards,
    Karl.

P.S. sorry to hear you're going through the family courts at the moment, involved in something similar myself.
