Does this gal add value to this site?

She seems to be running a bit smoother today, but I would really appreciate some feedback from fellow warriors.

I know there is opinion on whether this tactic converts and I do realize it is dependent on product.

Questions:

Does the video spokes person play immediately for you?

After she plays, is it studdering for you? ie does the video freeze

Do you want to listen to her? Do you think the video adds value to the site?

Your opinions - be it noob or advanced warrior are greatly appreciated.

I like your gal, she plays immediately upon load and the presentation runs smoothly. She is likable and has a down-to-earth quality that works well for the product.

Only drawback for me was the length. She had my attention for the first minute or so before I started to lose interest. Perhaps she can go over the major points on the home page, and give more details in brief segments on the interior pages?

    Nice site, too. Good luck,

I like her...she's not actively selling, but rather informing. It's a nice change-of-pace. Also I found her easy to listen to.

I run from sites that force video or audio, but that's totally a personal preference. I would never suggest that my opinion on it extrapolates to your target audience. But in terms of it playing upon load, yes it does. And it wasn't too long, which is good. I would test a version with it and one without and drive some similar traffic to each to see which converts better.

I have a love-hate for these kind of sites. It's great to have a speaker, but I think it needs to be when you click play, not automatic.

If I am at work I don't want to risk my speakers blaring out (even if it is my lunch break and i am "allowed" to do it) so if that happens I will immediately close the browser - quickest way to shut it up.

I think generally having a speaker on page will make me more likely to buy if they explain the product well. So good luck, I would suggest making her appear with a play button to get her speaking!

Yes, need to figure out a split test arrangement. Apparently it took the programmers 2 hours to add her in initially - not sure why it was such a feat, but now that they know where things are it should be an easy swap.

I did not either at first. Needed to let the page sit there for well over 30 seconds and by that time I'm not sure people are still going to be sitting on that particular home page.

theemperor brings up a very valid point as well - people in the office surfing around (but probably should be working, lol) will get annoyed if noise unexpectedly comes out of the computer.

    Hi Jill

Well I really like her, but that may just be a result of the midlife crisis I've been in for the last decade!

But seriously I think it works well for this site. Like Zeus66 I generally deplore sites that force audio or video on me, but I'm getting more tolerant of them now. Her presentation is informative and isn't a hard sell - it is a bit long though, perhaps it could be shortened a bit.

The video loaded after a slight delay, for that matter there was also a slight delay loading the presentation at the top of the screen. But it was nothing too drastic. During her presentation I experienced one instance of a slight freeze, but otherwise it ran smooth. I should also mention that currently we are experiencing a major storm so our communications lines might be less than optimum at the moment, that may be the reason for the glitch.

BTW, the site looks excellent, very nice work! Did you do this yourself?

Best of luck with your site, I think you have a winner on your hands.

      Hi Jill,

      Nice Site!

I'm a video guy so naturally I like these additions if they are done well, and yours is very good (personal opinion).

The video did freeze on me, however.

Question, I went back for a second look and the video did not play. She never entered the room . Is there a cookie that prevents the video from playing once a visitor has gone to the site?

I had those issues myself as well as my brother who took a look. I'm not exactly sure what is going on from a programming perspective. I've had it play, not play, play after 30 seconds, stop in the middle of playing, etc.

I'm on firefox with high speed broadband card, so trying to figure out what those issues are exactly, which is why I need feedback on what others are experience when visiting.

It took about 7 seconds for the site itself to load, then the spokesperson popped in at about 25 seconds. I have a fast connection (normally) but we have blizzard conditions here today, so that may be part of the delay. No stuttering or freezing though. I love how you can click on her and she immediately vanishes :-)

As for adding value, in this particular case I would say it does. I personally don't like the (minor) intrusion, but to a non-IMer, I do think this one adds value. Most I have run into DON'T add value as they are more hard-sell and annoying.

Jill, there was a delay before she stuck her head out, but after that the video played smoothly.

While the actual presentation was OK (the fact that she was attractive didn't hurt), I think the teleprompter needed to be just a tad faster. She did pretty well, but I could tell she was reading.

That said, with the delay, I found the video distracting. I was just getting familiar with the layout and deciding where to click first, then I have this gal start talking at me.

I have another suggestion to throw in the testing queue...

Use the video more like a lift letter - one of those "before you decide this isn't for you" or "if you've decided not to order" notes that come with DR packages.

        Thanks for those suggestions.

It's funny when one has worked behind the scenes or know how things go that one gets more critical on the final output. I can go to a movie for instance and see some people getting into it, but something is off about it and I start to dissect what is going on in the scene and next thing you know I've missed half of the movie.

So I know what you're saying about the reading tossing you out.

        Thanks.

Not for me. I've never liked this talking head approach. I got so annoyed with those sites that I've got flashblocker running now in FF just to avoid it playing automatically. (I did turn it off for yours).

As far as her delivery, etc. It is fine, no problem at all. Just doesn't add anything for me, in fact it sends me away.

      She causes problems with me.

It took about a minute for the video to appear and start playing. If I hadn't been looking for a video, I would have clicked to another page or left the site already. When it started she said about ten words and the video froze and could not be started again.

I was using the newest update of Firefox and have DSL so connection speed is not a problem.

Site looks quite nice actually. Even the blog looks good to me IMO. The gal looks good, took about 20 secs to load, but froze on me about half way through, and tbh, I don't really care for things like that that are automatic. LOL, sometimes things like that scare the crap outta me when I have the volume turned up, and not expecting it.

I do like the overall look and feel of the site though.

The only opinion that really matters is that of your target market.

Does the site convert? That is the ONLY question you really need to answer.

I've got a list of things that I personally don't care for and will leave a site when I see any of those elements on my list.

BUT ... I put aside that personal preference issue when I started testing pages and found that my target market didn't share my particular preferences. In fact, stuff that I personally found annoying turned out to convert very well.

So now ... my own approach and my advice to anyone is to follow these 3 simple rules:

    1) test
    2) test
    3) test some more

Do a split-run test for versions with and without the video.
    Track the conversions.
The one with the highest conversions wins and should be the one you run.

I like her, right off she says some things that make me interested in this product (like about how the water is filtered right when coming into the house, the need for no plastic bottles, etc).

I really don't like those autoplay videos normally but I like that this one was easy to turn off and didn't block the text of the page. And actually once she started talking, I did start listening.

Jill, I use a script blocker so I had to allow scripts on your site. At that point the video gal strolled in right away. If you had not asked for the opinion, I would never have had any reason to allow scripts. This would mean I never saw video gal.

I agree with those who say that it's rude to autoplay a video. Someone might be at work, or in a place where they or someone else would be disturbed by the sound. I much prefer putting the video in an ordinary box with a play button, and a caption like "click here for a two minute introduction to the easy, affordable way to improve your health."

She seems personable but I think she should introduce herself. Billy Mays wasn't a personal expert on everything, but he always did say, "Hi, Billy Mays here for [product name]" at the top of his pitch.

She didn't appear immediately for me.

Personally, I don't like automatic audio or video, however, she is very natural and informative. For people who don't have an aversion to automatic audio or video, I think she would enhance their experience of the site.

If I was in the market for this product however, I would be annoyed by her, although not enough to click off the site.

I can see how it would be a distraction in an office environment.

Perhaps it's just me, but I get really distracted with excessive hand movements. I also thought the delivery was too obviously reading from a teleprompter.

Still, in answer to your question, all in all I don't think taking her off screen would have much effect on your sales

        Hi:

        1. Question: A bit confused -- is this actually *your* product? Or are you an affiliate for it? (I know not your original question, but was curious).

        2. The model looks `ok`, but (please don`t take offense ) -- I would probably look for a more attractive model. She looks kind of plain/ordinary. However, maybe that is what appeals to your market. Perhaps you should do some split tests with different models.

I found the video to be well done. Although it did not load for me right away (about 10 seconds). Froze once then was smooth. I'm using Firefox.

After looking through all the posts it is about 50/50 on opinions about liking it or not. I really don't mind these things as long as I can turn them off easily.

I'd go with trafficwave and say that you need to test it both ways. I know that IMer's are not necessarily your target market which is all that matters. I did have my wife look at it and she is regular internet user. I didn't tell her about the video and asked her opinion afterward - she thought it was nice and liked the delivery.

We both like the site in general - very professional. My wife felt that it was a seasoned company because of the professional look.

Oh and by the way she reminded me that we need to change our filters... another item on the to do list...

If you have a really hot model you are gonna get more attention from guys I guess. So maybe you can have two pages?

I'm actually really into water filters. I mean I have always had a britta filter. So as soon as I saw your ad, I was like that's kinda cool. Seems reasonable.

And I'm a 29 year old single male living in London. So it does seem to translate.

I don't know about the racially homogeneous thing as I'm white, so I might not notice it.

Where did you get the spokeswoman from? It seems to really fit the site.

One thing that really annoys me is if the video plays every time I revisit the page. I am an affiliate for a product that has one of those videos and every time I check the sales page for images etc it really annoys me.

Slight delay before video starts, but then it runs smoothly to the end. She's fine to listen to, but for some reason I just closed the page when she finished. She moved off the the left of the screen and my attention was not drawn back to the rest of the website, which was rather good when I reopened it.

Does it add value? Not sure. Don't think it reduces value though. I presume that the absense of a clear call to action is deliberate.

I presume that the addition of two charming children (, a wedding ring) and a dog and would have cost more.

One of the best implementations I have seen - have not liked most of them.

I like it overall, with three suggestions:

    1) I am not a fan of the intro "You've come to the right place". Just a personal view. The rest is good.

    2) It is too long.

    3) The noise level is WAY too high. Run the audio through a noise reduction filter and you'll have a MUCH cleaner audio. Outsource if you don't know how to do it.

Well done! What script are you using?

hey, I am using CHROME and the video does not play for me at all - Its a real good idea to cross check with all popular browsers before launching something.

Although, I am not sure if it is a problem with all CHROME users.....all I can say is that it doesn't play for me ......

I don't care for auto-play, which is why I have my sound turned off on my computer at all time. So if there is an auto-play that I decide to watch, I need the ability to start it from the beginning. This is especially true if I get there from a link on another site, such as a forum. I'll open it up in a tab, and keep reading my first page before checking out the new site.

I'm not sure if many people use the internet the same way as me, but if you do continue with autoplay you might want to look into adding a replay button.

I like the gal's presentation.. Her statements were clear and factual.. I would suggest that her presentation should be concise though so as not to lose the website visitor's interest.. The gal should refer to a page in your website, as a closing statement, to have continuity in viewing your site (from the gal to the website pages). I hope this helps..

for me, it took a little longer (20 secs) to pop up I thought she had the day off.

I tend to like the full sexy body type and not half-body as you have here but as for value. I'd give it an A+

Does the video spokes person play immediately for you?

After she plays, is it studdering for you? ie does the video freeze

Do you want to listen to her? Do you think the video adds value to the site?

I like her but when I am at work I do not like when a video comes on unexpectedly. It always seems that my speakers are turned up higher than I thought.

The site loaded fast for me.

I like her, she has a wholesome honest soccer mom appearance about her.

Had I not been looking for her I never would of seen her. It took about 20
    seconds for her to appear.

Also, is she set to appear only once per ip? I tried to go back but she never
appeared again. After 45 seconds I clicked away.

I also really like that she isn't branded.

Great site and the video was flawless here.

    FYI:
Several years ago when I was working for a large Internet company we polled 8,000 members (50% of which were women) on various marketing strategies.
"What is your reaction to sound automatically playing on a webpage?" was one of the questions.
87% of the members said that they would leave the site...

Needless to say we stopped our custom "Harold and Carol" characters from auto playing that we had on several category pages.

The comments regarding the ethnicity of the model popped my curiosity, so I did a little research...

One finding (can't post link, it's in a paid database) was that if one was targeting 'everybody' then the two most-trusted archetypes were blue-eyed blond women and brown-eyed dark-haired men.

        Another interesting finding here:

Ethnic consumer reaction to targeted marketing: a theory of intercultural accommodation. | North America > United States from AllBusiness.com

The article, originally published in the Journal of Advertising, said that the effectiveness of matching ethnicity (or using ethnic symbolism in general) depended on a couple of variables:

        1. The viewer's perception of the accommodation motive. If the viewer thought the symbols were there just to pander to an ethnic variable (like skin color), the reaction was negative.

        2. The viewer's level of assimilation. If the viewer was more integrated into mainstream society, cultural accommodations were less important.

A third article (lost the link) postulated that in some cases it's more important to match the cultural values than the outward signs (like skin color). The article referred to a study that found that among a mostly Hispanic study group, the most trusted spokespersons were Homer Simpson (a cartoon character with no real ethnicity) and Hank Hill (a cartoon white middle-aged male). The reasons given were that both were portrayed a strong sense of family, a strong value in the Hispanic community.

So it would seem that Jill's blue-eyed blond spokesmodel is a pretty good choice to appeal to the widest audience.
