Would you host your website on a company with Private Whois info?

I am considering purchasing the phpmydirectory script. Both phpmydirectory and their hosting company AccomplishHosting have privacy enabled on the Whois database.

I like to know who I am dealing with. Can anyone advise me as to the pros and cons of dealing with a secretive online company?

Val, personally I don't like the idea of paying money to a company that does not want anyone to know who they are. What is the value they are offering that made you concider buying their product? If you feel uneasy then I recommend not purchasing and continue furthur research until you find what you are comfortable with.

I always automatically just check the "whoisguard" on namecheap, and I wouldn't consider myself shady... lol

But, with so many hosting options... and in an environment like this where people are probably hosting phpmydirectory (I'm one of them), you could probably just ask the question: "who should I use for phpmydirectory hosting?" and come away feeling much better about your choice.

  • It's a decent script. I use it. But I don't use their hosting.

I can tell you that support is only adequate. And they are not really helpful because they insist on doing everything themselves like what they do is somehow top secret.

Thanks for your responses. That is my feelings exactly. A friend of mine purchased the script and has had nothing but trouble with it - but perhaps understandably so in all fairness to the company, as the friend does not have any experience at all in installing and maintaining scripts. However, the friend did pay for installation and the script never did work properly, so it was abandoned.

However, I've also read rave review about how wonderful and powerful this script is, and for a local directory site I really haven't found one that has all the bells and whistles this one has.

I'm going to hold off on purchasing - mainly because of the privacy issue. I think it would be best to do some more research before I come to any conclusions.
