Make a prediction. What will happen with the purchased traffic I bought? :)

Hey everyone,

I'm going to see once and for all if purchased traffic is any good at all.

I was searching on eBay a few days back for a deal on hosting and I ran across one of the many auctions selling traffic.

But Wait! This one was different. . They said "This is not your usual junk traffic you see on eBay." "This is real quality traffic."

So I bit the bullet and spent a huge $1.99 for 1,000 "Real Visitors."

So Warriors, what's your prediction?

Sometime within the next day I'm going to set up an MRR Make Money eBook of some kind. I'm going to price it at $7.77 and then I'm going to hit the go live button to receive 1,000 visitors in one day. I'll put a counter on the site to see if I really get 1,000 visitors and the rest will be history.

Tell me what you think will happen with this little experiment. Will I make 0 sales? Will I really get 1,000 visitors? Whatcha think?

    Hey Mark,

If my traffic converts at 40% I'll delete this thread and never tell.

Not for real. I just thought this would be a fun thing to do to end the week.

Price the book at $1,000 and you'll become a millionaire.

I know from first hand experience that's the only kind traffic that converts at 100%.

There's an upcoming WSO on it... keep an eye on it.

    ...

Seriously though, my prediction is same as that of John Rogers; 1,000 hits and zero sales.

I'm going to be optimistic, and believe George will have some succulent copy or video or something on the page, and he will make 5 sales.

And if he succeeds, I will go buy some bargain basement traffic myself.

You will have some traffic, obviously untargeted, so your conversions will be paltry.

I think those "buy traffic from us" companies use contextual advertising to drive traffic, much like AdBrite, but not sure.

The first time I did something like this I made $300 in commissions from $10 in cheap traffic.

I now realise was luckier than a flukey poker player with a 4-leaf clover in his pocket, holding four 7's and an Ace and with crossed fingers and toes.

      I'll expect you'll make appox $0

        Wow! But really! Wow! LOL

I don't believe these things are all just "luck." Like any casino game if you have some knowledge of what you are doing, you can have better odds.

If these are REAL people going to the site and you have something that is really eyecatching going on I think he can get something.

Alas, I have never done it, so I will support this "follow me" effort as I want to see even if one sale can result.

        Very exciting.

No it was luck, it was the very first thing I did with my clickbank account, and I googled "cheap traffic" and used the first site I found, and didn't use a landing page, just threw in the hoplink !!!!!!!!!

Tried 2 more doses of that traffic and nothing

Are these 1,000 "Real Visitors" targeted visitors looking for "make money" stuff?

Do the folks that sold you the traffic give you data on how/where they obtained the traffic so you can try to understand your future visitors and craft an offer that's more likely to appeal to them?

Are you only putting up one version of your landing page, or are you going to split test?

Are you only going to offer a $7.77 ebook or are you going to split test a squeeze page type arrangement?

Are you going to hit them with an exit pop for a CPA offer (like the ones for a free $500 Wal Mart gift card, etc.)?

Based on your explanation, I know the answer. Just trying to plant a few more seeds.

LOL - I've tried the whole, "Well maybe everyone's just hiding the fact that traffic packages actually convert". Wrong answer, I played a lot with that stuff in the past...

It's mainly good for black hatters who are cookie stuffing or doing other crazy stuff to inflate their numbers to make things seem more natural...

But anyways No sales and maybe 3 opt-ins if you set up a squeeze page.

Your stats counter will show about 223 visitors. You will have zero sales.

If you put javascript on your page and logged the clicks or even just javascript actually being executed, you will notice a very odd thing. The external javascript file will be loaded, but it will only be executed for about 12 of the visitors you receive.

If you have access to your log files, you will see that the group of visitors is very diverse. They use an incredibly diverse group of browsers and computers according to the user agent strings. In fact, sometimes you may be confused and wonder how that user is running Microsoft Explorer on an Unbuntu linux machine. It will seem very puzzling how there is almost an equal percentage of machines and browsers mixed in the logs.

All of those visitors come from URLs that you can't seem to access or if you can access them, you can't find a link to your site anywhere on the page that supposedly referred those visitors.

I'm predicting that you'll get 1,000 visitors and 20-30 sales. Then when you go to roll out and spend $1,990 to get 1,000,000 visitors from the same outfit, they'll switch you over to the dud traffic and move on the the next mark. Much higher customer value in that strategy.

Mostly this sort of traffic appears in another frame so it can be sold to someone else and is gone from your site in under 10 seconds.

Result: You'll probably get the 1,000 visitors who are looking for something very different from what you're offering. So sales will be zero and your statistics for average time visitors spend on the site will plummet.

On the other hand, if you pay for targeted advertising... well, that's a different story.

You know, IF that's true... maybe the key for that traffic is to use a very simple headline (with no extra copy) and get them to "click here" to find out more.

At least you then have a chance to convert those few 10 second visitors who do click, or at least get them to opt-in to something.

You will get 100 page views out of the 1k visitors your suppose to get ( not unique visitors) and the stickness of each visitor will be so miniscule in micro seconds it will be hard to track by any system and you will get no sales

    The real story:

A vast majority of the traffic is actually 'bots. You know that spyware that sniffs for passwords and sends spam email from your computer while you are sleeping? (OK maybe not your computer, but certainly your aunt bessie's computer, your nephew jake and your granny's computer which are all infected with spyware).

The gangs who write that spyware do so generically. They build what they call a "bot net." Then they sell time on their bot net to other gangsters. The buyers of that time can run processes that spam, perform distributed denial of service attacks, attempt brute force attacks on servers or many other things.

One thing they can run is a traffic bot. That is what you are buying. They run a process on a bot net that tells all of these infected computers to go visit your site, but with random browser information and referer information all spoofed.

You probably didn't think what you were buying was actually that seedy; now did you?

Of course no humans will ever even see your site. The "visits" happen from infected computers when they are still turned on, but not being used by their owners.

    But wait... there's more!

You could detect that pretty easily. You could run a little external javascript that just makes an xml call when it runs. If your logs show that the external javascript was loaded, but never even ran then you know you have a bot. It loaded the external javascript to make it look like it was a real browser, but it has no idea how to actually execute it. It is just "visiting" hundreds of sites for it's bot-net operators.

If you received 1,000 visitors that loaded the external javascript, but never executed it, you could easily accuse the traffic seller of fraud. But it isn't that simple.

The traffic has been laundered extensively. It gets mixed together with traffic from several bot nets AND a tiny bit of "real" traffic (usually about 12 visitors out of 1,000) that comes from popunders, iframes or something like that. Those 12 "visitors" never see your site either. Your site is in a 1x1 iframe or was popped under and then instantly closed.

But you will see a tiny fraction who are human and that kills the "every single visitor loaded javascript, but never executed it" fraud argument.

I don't recommend buying this kind of traffic. You really are financing criminal gangs when you buy this stuff. It gets laundered through several people who have no idea where the traffic comes from first, but the final source is the same countries you have banned from purchasing in your merchant account.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Anyway, my prediction, 1000 visitor, 0 sales.

    Good luck anyway!

Let me pose a question here...

I have a few hundred thousand of genuine 404 error visitors a month. I have tried sending them to an Adsense page and also to a squeeze page.

Due to smart pricing, the adsense starts at about 5-10 pounds a day but then goes to around 50cents a day after Google catches on.

I get around 10 -50 signups a day, but not sure how targeted there are.

Are there any generic affiliate programs (non-adult) that you think would work well with this traffic and make me lotsa lotsa?

You'll get real visitors, each of them gets paid (less than a cent) to view your page. 0 sales for sure.
Why don't you give them a free offer for an opt-in? If you get an opt-in or two you know they were people (not machines) after all. Also, if you get some opt-ins there is a chance you can earn money from this traffic. It's not easy, but not impossible.

There's not enough information to make an educated guess.

It mainly depends where the visitors come from and if they are targeted.

1000 hits, not 1000 visitors. It is automated, it is usually bots. You not only wasted $1.99 but also wasted your time. But you may have saved a warrior from doing it in the future

    My *prediction*:

    - 1000 "visits". (238 of them being "unique2)
    - No sales.
    - Rediculous bounce rate.(100%)
    - No response of any kind

BUT, it's slightly more exciting than a scratchcard (And a lot more work)
Because IF it would actually work (like the "make money fast" courses, people buy them based on their emotions and curiosity. They don't really believe in it, but it might work) it would make you way richer than a scratchcard.

There are houndreds of providers of this kind of service, most of them are scams, but there might be someone who actually works to some extent. (And I wouldn't think they cost $1.99 per 1000 visitors)

Btw, I too, have some "turnkey superultimate adsense sites" that makes me millions every day with a CTR of 78,4% that you can buy for $49.95 for each. (Hosting not included) :p

    Just my $1.99...

The whole concept of "buying guaranteed traffic" is bogus. Just think about it. If you had the ability to send thousands of visitors to any site you wanted at any time, would you sell it to people for $1.99 on ebay? Or would you send it to yourself and make millions? The concept itself is just absurd.

    Yeah, that is absurd!

If Google, Yahoo and Live had legitimate traffic, there is no way they would ever sell it to the highest bidder! They would just use it themselves.

Obviously I am being sarcastic. The fact that someone is selling traffic doesn't mean it's fraud. But I have never seen legitimate traffic sold on Ebay without any details.

Legitimate traffic sources always go to great lengths to show you the source of their traffic. That is true if you are buying banner space on a blog or a text link on a search engine or forum.

Selling traffic isn't the red flag here. Lots of legitimate companies sell traffic. selling 1,000 "hits" without wanting to say where those "hits" come from is the red flag.

      Hi All,

I got so much food for thought from all the posts in this thread that I've decided to "really" try to make this work.

If there is any chance of even one live person reading the page I want to "get them."

I'm going back to the old Allen Says method of a direct response sales page and a chance for them to buy.

I'll test another $1.99 worth later for the opt in suggestions.

I've been invited out to dinner so I'll continue to work this when I get back. I know the stuff below is cheezy but I'm trying to appeal to non IM marketers who might be interested in IM.

Here is What they will see IF I get any real visitors. (NOTE: This is for discussion purposes and not really an offer to anyone here on the WF)

      Tell me what you think.

take it from me, who built a full time business with this type of traffic... its lead generation only. if you try to sell them something straight away it will be a loss. but if you offer them a freebie to entice them onto a list and market that product freom your autoresponder some will buy.

And you have a list you can market more than one product to. they wont be super targetted thats why trying to sell them a product from the page the see wont work well

Putting them on a list and marketing a range of products to them will have a much better result.. up too you though

Hard to say but, all things being equal....

    ABOUT 1000 hits
Short term visits(generally less than 1 minute)
    ONE page views
    Likely NO sales

HEY, at about 5 clicks for a penny, what can you expect?

This scam generally ranges all the way from autoclick via computer(NO SALES) to enticed manual click(Possibly SOME sales, but it works better with freebies). NEITHER is great.

Are you saying something against MY post? Do you NOT think it is a scam, or what?

There are only a FEW ways to do this. MOST, at this point, really are scams. Others are either dangerous, or would cost more.

Yea, you are right about that Whateverpedia. Actually I've been here every day and night since the mid 1990s. I've made probably 8,000 posts. (some of the old Warrior Forums didn't count posts.) And I probably repost in about 10 or 20% of my threads. Reposting in your own threads used to be called bumping in the old days and was a practice frowned upon. I don't do it unless I have something else of value or funny to add and so far I don't.

      What's up?
KristiDaniels: What promised results are you referring too?

As far as keeping my word, I said early on that some Warriors who I respect gave me food for thought about this little experiment and I changed my mind about just throwing up a junk offer.

As you can see in prior conversations in this thread it was suggested that I use this experiment to start a list, make a more quality offer, do tracking, (you even suggested something about a java script, the subject of which is prolonging my research as I know nothing of such things.)

And as far as "Milking this thread," I've not bumped it once just to milk it. I did joke around early on in post 3 something I do often. Also I did respond one more time to something that needed responding to. And now I'm making this post in answer to some rather odd demands for "my promised results" (I made no promise to post results) and a rather flattering chronicle by whateverpedia as to the history of my thread. (thanks for noticing )

I will say this, as a direct result of my $1.99 purchased traffic experiment I have made over $100 so far. How? OK, now I will make a promise. I will tell in detail how this whole thing turns out. When? When I'm ready.

Thanks all for your interest in this.

George Wright P.S. Just a heads up. I've noticed threads that take the path that this one has taken usually get locked or deleted. That is not my intention or hope, however it happens. So when I'm ready to tell all, I'll figure out how to get the word out and no, it won't cost you anything.

But I like it, you made some money off of it, I'm sure you're going to do some more real marketing (at least to rank and get it kind of automated) when the traffic is done, and head on over to your other stuff.

But please, yes, when you're ready, I'd love to learn what you did.

I have never gotten any results form buying traffic except from PPC like adwords or MSN adcenter. What i am seeing is a re-emergence of snail mail marketing, particularly postcards.

I don't know about others here, but I used to get tons of junk mail for the "make money" niche. Now I hardly get anything at all, but the stuff I do get I normally at least look at it.

Seems most marketers have abandoned snail mail for IM leaving it wide open again...

You sure you make $100 out of it? Damn. Put it on your next wso and we will buy it. Most of the traffic I buy from ppl were bot generated and they sucks so bad. You might be just very lucky to find an honest traffic broker.

Well, if they are legit, your traffic will come slowly, probably not targeted at all, and if they are BlueFart, you will probably be getting traffic exchange traffic. Best way is to use the free version of sitemeter to see where all the traffic is coming from.

After all these junk traffic can be useful for CPA tactics! But selling to them is not an easy task!

I would like to know how he did!

    Whoa that's amazing!

What was the price of your initial offer? I am suspecting it was a low one, right?

I will definitely have to look into this traffic dump thing in the future. Sounds like it could work...

Hi George Hope you get at least one sale so you get your money back. I believe that you could get 3-5 and that will give you a profit...........

Oh it might all be from a non english speaking country, I had that happen before but i did get a few signups I think 3 out of 10,000.
Even if its not bots or non english visitors, its still untargeted.
Sad to say I predict 1000 (+100 for good measure to cover the hits) and zero sales.

That's a pretty silly game. Let's all predict something and we'll never know if we were right or not.

Sounds to me like he made $100 by playing all of us here at the Warrior forum. A contact he made while milking this thread resulted in $100.

He never said he made the $100 from that junk traffic. And he's apparently the master at not saying things.

I think I remember my 8 year old brother playing that game.

"I'm thinking of a number between between 1 and 10... guess what number I'm thinking..." he said.

So I guessed 7. He walked away. I said... "Hey; what number were you thinking of..."

He (George) said "I never said I was going to tell you. I just wanted to see if I could get you to waste your time guessing."

      What a juvenile game!?!

Why is everyone kissing his arse after he tricked you into guessing the outcome and then after milking this thread for weeks decides to tell us that he never promised to tell us the results?

I think that was implied in the rules of the guessing game; wasn't it?

And then he milks it for more saying that he made $100 by playing this game on us? And maybe he'll tell us how after milking this more for a few weeks (in his own time). And you want to kiss his arse some more?

When I was 7, I just slugged my brother in the arm and told him what a jerk he was. Now that I've been had at 58 by the juvenile George Wright and see others kissing his arse and saying "trick me again", I don't know what to say.

Do you really care about $100 so much that you will kiss someone's arse after he purposefully tricked you into wasting your time and looking like a fool?

OK. Then let's do knock knock jokes... you start by saying "Knock Knock."
Maybe he had a bet with someone that he could get a pile of people to perpetuate this thread.

Not that we'll ever know of course.

I can see a new thread starting soon. "Guess how George made $100 from $1.99 junk traffic". The cycle goes on.

Yes you will know whateverpedia. It has nothing to do with a bet or a one time "contact" as someone mentioned or anything save good old fashioned marketing backed by a solid product.

And to stop any perception that I was trying to "trick" anyone...

First of all I'm not that smart. I wish I could have preconceived a thread like this one that would be so viewed and discussed but I didn't it was just an accident. I figured I would get a few "predictions," the thread would move to thread heaven and when I could put the results in some coherent words I'd briefly tell my results to any and all interested Warriors and move on.

Secondly as I mentioned earlier I plan to tell how the purchased traffic does and also how I made some money as a result of my experiment but I never promised when.

Third, you said "Guess how George...etc." No one will have to guess. I'll say how.

Finally, a lot of people gave me some suggestions to implement here and what started out as a lark to throw up a junk offer for some junk traffic and post some fast results (which I frankly thought would be negative) quickly evolved into a project. (Which, overall the "project" has earned me some money.) NO not from the junk traffic, not yet.

        Thanks,

        George Wright

George, no need to justify yourself to the cynics.

This is the Main Forum (where we talk about making money). This is more on topic than a good chunk of what gets discussed here.

If people are interested, yet so damn bothered by your time line, they could easily pony up $1.99 to test it themselves and report their own results. And it wouldn't take as much effort as bickering about your alleged intentions with this thread. I guess maybe it wouldn't be as much fun for them though. Perhaps manufacturing scandal > making money for some.

Anyway, congrats on the test. Let me know how the second round goes.

I always wanted to predict that it will take you more than getting 1,000 "real" visitors for you to make any "real" sales but Buildingfutures beat me to it.

So, what did you wRIGHTly do to make something out of the $1.99 worth of traffic? I'm waiting.

Why buy unknown traffic when you can create your own through Social Media, Blogging, Article Writing and Video Marketing. I also think you need 5,000+ visits per day to make any real money in this business.

Great job George. Very interesting thread. I never chimed in, but I thought you'd earn zero also. Harvesting the leads makes sense if that's what you did. Look forward to hearing more. Imagine if you duplicate this over and over in many markets and outsourced the work? Hmmmm...

Quite a crowd you stirred here.

By the way, I also didn't replied earlier after seeing that a lot of

Dang..are we this negative these days...

    "YOU WON'T MAKE ANYTHING!"

I hope you all are getting my point here...

Great to hear that you made something out of it George!

      All the best,
Probably because most of us have tried it/bought into the "dream" and failed hard.

The guys selling it says it's "targeted traffic", but what seems too good to be true, usually are.

      That's why
It has nothing to do with the mindset really, as you need to have an awesome mindset to succeed in internet marketing.

George I dont know you at all so don't take offense to this, but I see you releasing your results in a WSO and making a killing off it.

Anyone with any common sense can see it's leading there. But I'm sure alot of people will find it to be a good purchase turning a $1.99 cost into a $100 (if that was the sales amount generated off of the $1.99 bought traffic)

Congrats if you did indeed make over $100 with the visitors, though I think the majority of the time buying traffic is ineffectual.
