I've heard that some domain registrars offer free privacy protection with new domains. Namecheap, for example. Does anyone know if that free privacy also counts for domain renewals? Or only the initial period for which you buy the domain? I'm just wondering if I'll have some big surprise bill next year.

No it doesn't count for renewals as far as I know.

I know for a fact that it is only free for the first year with GoDaddy, not sure about NameCheap.

Ok, interesting. That means I should probably transfer my domains elsewhere if I want privacy protection, since on Godaddy it's $8.99 and on Namecheap it's $2.49 or something. I have a bunch of 99 cent .info domains that are going to become $10 next year. lol

I got 6 domains from godaddy a couple days ago, i got the bulk price of $7 or close to it per .com and also got the free private registration.

Pretty unbeatable deal although i belive its for the first year only.

At Namecheap, you will not get whois protection when you renew. But, if you sell a domain, or don't use one, you can use the whois for a different domain. I always have extra whois subscriptions available.

Of course they want you to renew your whois for each domain. So, there is a delay period when you renew your domain, before they let you use one of your other whois subscriptions. I don't know how long that is.
