Video Hosting site or Host your own?

Hello;

What are you using for playing videos on your site? Hosting service or Self Hosted?

I have been encoding my videos as flash and using a flv free player. It works well when viewed on the computer. The only problem I know of is that the videos don't play on the Ipod / Iphone. I can put tags in the html for my video for the search engines.

Other than the Ipod compatibility issue, is there any reason to use one of the video hosting providers, from a marketing perspective? (i.e. better indexing)

I can host my own videos on a premium CDN for 22 cents per GB, vs the cheapest video hosts I've seen start around $2-3 per GB.

I like the idea of having my videos be ipod compatible, but am having a hard time rationalizing spending 10 times the money to have them be ipod compatiable.

Thank You,

Jamie Dolan

    Hi jamie,
not sure if this will help but you can get your videos converted to ipod extensions and offer it as a download. that's about all i know i would not go video hosting unless absolutely necessary

I host my own... or put them on youtube and embed them on your site.

      HI,

I know what your talking about and I have seen sites like that, something like "If you can't see this video or your on a Iphone Click Here".

That sounds like it is the easiest and cheapest option if I am hosting my own.

      Thanks,

    youtube, viddler etc...

PROs: get large reach and new traffic you would not have had, its free
CONS: lost elite branding of self-hosted video

as for ipoods, etc I think (please correct me) that you can encode as mp4 (instead of flv) and it plays just the same on jw player and is ipod compatible.

as for cdn. I use simplecdn for 3.9 cents a GB. I am not sure if they are "premium" or not, but they work for my purposes.

Amazing. I'd be happy to pay 3.9 cents a GB. I have to read more about them. I can't see how they can afford to sell bandwidth for so little money. Rackspace charges .22 on their CDN.

      Thanks,

Thanks. I just searched for it and found a free copy of it on some site called Giveaway of the day. It said there is only a hour left to download it. I suspect it was a spyware / scam type of site, but I did some searches and it looks like a real site, and the program is really free.

          Thanks.

I've usually just had most videos hosted up somewhere, mainly to save myself a little bit of bandwidth, and also make the most of YouTube.

Youtube hosting is great because not only can you encode the videos on youtube, but you can set videos to be private. This way you can create a video series and only release a few of them on youtube. You can then release the rest on your own site, or "leak" them out one at a time.

Further, if you do get any reasonable amount of traffic, you will really get nailed on bandwidth charges.

      Hope that helps.
