How to sell digital items?

I am trying to figure out how people sell digital items - by sending people directly to Paypal for example and not having to send them to a website first. I have been reading on Paypal but am still confused. Can anyone help?

You migh want to check out E-junkie Shopping Cart for selling downloads & tangible goods which I use to deliver digital items. You can use it for software, ebooks, mp3's etc. anything that can be stored as a file.

They charge $5 a month, and integrate with PayPal. When someone pays via paypal they check the transaction has processed successfully and then email the customer a link.

I second the vote for e-junkie, they are a great service and they handle every aspect of the transaction, from accepting the PayPal payment to providing your customers with an exclusive limited-use link to download the product. This prevents people from sharing the link, e-junkie provides a control panel so you can regenerate the link in case legitimate customers lose their original one.

I actually have a do it yourself way. I post the item on a file share site like keep and share with a name not associated with the product. I then make a paypal button for it. When the sale is made at paypal, I get an email from paypal to my gmail acount. When the email is received, I have an autoresponder set to send an email thanking people for the purchase and sending them the link to download the file, which is a pdf file that comes up when they click the link. To set up the autoresponder you pick 6-8 words that are in the standard paypal thank you so it knows to respond. This way any old email does not trigger the autoresponse.

I get a daily report from keep and share with the number of visits, so if the number of visits exceeds sales by a bunch, I just move the file. This method saves you the cost of ejunkie or payloadz and also get the money right into your account so you dont worry about minimums.

This method is cost effective an easy once you get the hang of it and test it.

        Hi

What are the standard words? I tried Payment in subject line but then if someone query about the payment then it trigged autoresponder. Is there any specefic keyword that will show up only in Payment email from Paypal?

        Thanks

You just pick a bunch of random words from the standard paypal email you get, like transaction, receipt, I also use a word from the name of the product and maybe the price. Enough that no one could guess them. When the autoresponder sees an email with the 5-7 words, it triggers the response. I don't see how someone could guess the 5-7 words you pick and send you an email to get your link. Seems pretty secure to me.

My simple way does not allow for affiliates, just a quick way to get paid and deliver the product.

Yeh e-junkie is decent. Clickbank stinks for the fact they allow refunds no questions asked.

    Hey oregongal,

Why don't you have a website? Seems like you'd want something that tells them why they should buy your product.

In general, how do people find your product without a website?

    What arre you selling?

I understand web sites will help, also, with product sales, but why spend money on hosting and a domain when a sales page will do just fine?

I think she is trying to do what a lot of people do here already - put up a sales page with a button at the bottom directing them to PayPal to cash out. This is something that I have been researching too, and it looks like I will go with either Pay Dot Com or E-Junkie - since no one wants to share the elusive secret to going directly thru PayPal? lol...

And I know what you mean, I have done a lot of digging on PayPal and they don't make it easy to understand. And it looks too easy to get scammed by someone figuring out our download URL and getting them for free.

So, Erich, if you don't have a website - where do you put your "sales page"?
A sales page can be just that: a one-page website. I don't see how you can have a sales page (where?) unless you have a server to host it.

As for the "secret" of doing/going directly through PP... Did you try this?
    - create a website/page, aka sales page;
    - have even your buy-now button uploaded and displayed on it
    - go to your PP account and log in
    - click Merchant Services
    - under Create Buttons > click Buy NOw
    - under Step 1 go through all that stuff
-- Customize appearance will allow you to fill in the url of your own image
    - you can skip Step 2
    - Step 3 -
-- check the box: Take customer to a specific page (URL) after successful checkout:
AND add there your download page URL
-- deal with the rest of the fields as common sense dictates*

At the end of the process you get a code that you are supposed to copy/paste into your sales page (instead of that button displayed earlier)

Now, for protecting the download page's URL... you will find zillion suggestions in this forum. They range from free scripts to DLGuard, $7script, RAP and everything in between. It's really up to you what to use.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I am not against web pages as sales pages - I am just saying that many people here make a post as their sales page and then have their paypal button at the bottom. It just doesn't seem like a webpage is involved at all - as if paypal is hosting the file for them. But I take it that's not the case according to your steps? It refers to an address you give them to download from?

I will look into the programs you mentioned. I just know that putting your file out there, no matter how secure you try to make it (using robot.txt, etc..) won't work against people downloading stuff for free.

Oh, you are one of those new members that were taught by some self-appointed "guru" to come to this forum and post a WSO... without even knowing what WSO is?

WSO stands for Warriors Special Offer. Special meaning that you have a product that is or will be sold out on the market for X amount and you make a special, discounted offer to warriors, e.g. at 50% price.

When I joined the forum (and I am not a veteran here!) there were excellent WSOs with a lot of value. Lately... a lot of garbage.

So, your 'marketing plan' shouldn't be selling crap on this forum.
Sorry, Erich, nothing personal against you - it is more against all those that think (according to you) that they don't even need a site, just a "sales page with a paypal button" in this forum to make a quick buck.

Hopefully, somebody will end this craziness.

That shows how old I am... When I was young(er) and the internet was just a slowly evolving idea in scientific circles - all our jokes about Uri Geller were about his "trademark television performances of spoon bending".

(and on Wikipedia he is listed as most known 'telekinesis' star...)

I'd like to blow my own horn here. I created this for the non-techies. Maybe it doesn't have much customization options (maybe zero) but it's SUPER SIMPLE. No fees, no registrations... just upload and sell.

There are many ways to sell digital products, you can use scripts like DLGuard, DELAVO, a shopping cart like oscommerce also supports for digital download. Joomla CMS that integrated with a shopping cart called VirtueMart ( it cost you free).

However, you can also use paid service like PayLoadz or Paydotcom ( there is one time fee for Premium service of Paydatcom) , This service can automate your digital product sale, I use them both, and make you easy to manage your products.
