Very interesting video. The slide that took me by surprise was the one about the New York Times. It said that the information contained in one weeks worth of the New York Times was greater than a lifetime of information someone living in the 18th century would have. Wow! Are we better off with the huge amount of information we have access to compared to our ancestors?

      Hi,

Wow! Are we better off with the huge amount of information we have access to compared to our ancestors?
At this time, no - because currently, those with a vested interest are conditioning the vulnerable to absorb information in certain formats, from certain places, and they are lacing the information they receive with the message they want to spread.

Our ancestors were just as good at absorbing information. But they used all of their senses rather than just a few, and their main motivation was survival and progression as opposed to entertainment and sensory titilation.

Once the penalty for allowing ourselves to be manipulated manifests itself unavoidably, perhaps then, we will wake up and realise the benefit of the ability to share information instantaneously, worldwide.

But as long as control of it is in the hands of the few and they continue to bury good information, while monopolising the main 'channels', and the masses are still sleepwalking, we are still f****d.

The mainstream media has been hammered by the spread of the internet. Their 19th century business model of "dumb terminals" (newspapers, magazines, radio, tv), whereby the message is controlled with no input from the user is on its last legs. The message itself is secondary to the advertising. The content is there to fill in gaps between the ads.

The internet has become big mainly due to its interactivity, ie ordinary users can contribute, and even dispute the message.

When Twitter was first launched they were making such hyperbolic statements as "The next revolution will be tweeted". Ha, ha, ha.

Fast forward to this year. The US govt asks Twitter not to shut down its servers for routine maintenance, so they could monitor the developments in the Iranian elections.

The next revolution WILL be tweeted.

The interent has been the greatest democratizing tool ever. Sadly though, the ruling elite have never been able to make money from it. As you would expect when applying a 19th century business model to a 21st century concept.

Which is why they seeming to be working hard to turn it into the same dumb terminals that generate profit using their business model.

They can try, however we have moved on, and if/when the 'net ends up like tv, something new will emerge to replace it. They are fighting a losing battle.

There is no turning back now.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

        You are right on.

It is very difficult for the old' media zars to control/suppress information and the rate at which it spreads and is filtered on the internet. One other post mentioned the ol 'dumb terminals' but enough of that I will put my little black helicopters and wingnuts back into the conspiracy box. All funning aside more people are starting to see the light but it still is a small minority.

I am guessing you may have liked The Matrix?

I've watched this video somewhere.. I forgot the channel, I think it was the Wealth Channel in my country.. This video is an eye-opener.. The internet has really changed the global landscape in terms of marketing.. Imagine if the bulk of these internet users cater to the services you offered in your market or niche.

So you don't think that someone who is focusing on web 1.0 will not be woke up by the web 2.0 figures and possibly change direction?

Do you think English only speaking marketers will feel they may have to think about other languages or cultures?

In otherwords none of the information will affect your IM and how and where you present information online?

This is good information. My question is: What do we do with all these outdated devices? We need to find some way to recycle them into better things. Humans have always had the capacity to adopt to change.

      Hi Reapr,

I am guessing you may have liked The Matrix?
Funnily enough I haven't watched it. It was on recently (while I was working) and I caught bits of it, but it didn't really grab me - I'm not really into films.

But I am aware of the general concept - and appreciate that - and I reckon you're right that I'm the type of person who probably would like it.

I actually tend to 'enjoy' reading current affairs and observing the things that are occurring currently that have a similar bent. I use 'enjoy' loosely as it also makes me very angry, and makes me wish for a better world for my son to grow into.

I really should force myself to watch that film.

Have you read 'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand? I find the real world resembling the undertone of that book quite a lot currently.
