Aweber/Getresponse vs out-of-box solution

Hey Warriors,

I am putting a brief together for a client and I have recommended Aweber or Getresponse as a autoresponder/list management tool.

The client wants to compare an out-of-the-box solution (pay one price) versus Aweber/Get Response (monthly fee).

Do you and any recommendations for the best out-of-the-box solution
and could you explain to me which one (Aweber/Getresponse vs out-of-box solution) you would use and why?

Thank you in advance

EDIT: By "out-of-box solution" I am meaning a solution to load onto the client's own server.

If by out of the box solution you mean a script that is running on your server - most people would say the the biggest issue is deliverability. Plian English: his mail ends up in the spam folder.

Others will come and will post that I am wrong and their system works.

I don't know, never tried to use my own script on my server.

@Istvan - Thank you that's a really valid point. We have at least one overzealous SPAM filter from one of the largest ISP's in New Zealand, and my client says he has trouble getting company emails through to that ISP (I dread to think what would happen if he didn't go for the aweber/getresponse solution.)

@Alexa - Thanks for your input. Yeah I know what you are saying. Hence the post... I am gathering some fodder on the reasons for and against. Using his own ISP/Server is just going to be a bloody pain, I have just got to come up with some more valid reasons.

@Alexa - you are the Wordsmith! I like the "argument from authority" line. lol. That's going to be my "in case of emergency - break glass" reason.

ARP3 is the best out of box answer I have seen. Armand Morin and others with big lists use it. But there are still issues.

If he has a big list, the hosting fees will be comparable to the cost of other solutions. For example, many hosts have limits on the amount of emails delivered per hour - some as small as 50 per hour. SO if you are trying to mail to 100k people... You cant. So, you have to get hosting with specific companies like: ARP Dedicated Server Payment Page

But as you can see, the costs are still up there -- and you have to really watch deliverability.

The thing with buying an autoresponder and setting it up on your server (assuming that's what you mean by "out of the box") is that your internet server provider can ban you if you get too many spam complaints. Now I'm sure your client has no intention of spamming anyone but even the most ethical of marketers can be accused of such an act by forgetful/annoyed/angry subscribers. So I personally wouldn't recommend using an AR on your own server.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks,
    Adam

@Kevin - thanks for including Autoresponderplus in the equation. I will go check it out.

@Adam - That is a really good point. Getting banned by the ISP is not so good in NZ either. We only have a few!!! Thanks again
