earn $90 for setting up a "free" website

As you probably know, you can get a commission of around $90 for referring someone to a hosting account that only costs them $7.95ish per month. I've found hosting programs that only charge month to month with a small setup fee, so it's not hard to get people signed up.

I've seen warriors suggest offering a free website setup service for offline businesses...they just have to pay the small monthly hosting commission. Therefore, you're getting a $90 commission for a small project of setting up a simple / small wordpress site using an existing template, etc.

I've seen this suggested a few times as "quick money" here on the forum, but I'm curious to know if any warriors do it as a regular longer-term money maker.

Does anyone do quite a bit of these?

I've never done it but in my first business there was a guy who did this and he set up a few hundred ugly template sites for competitors all across my state.

So it's possible. I would even say that you can make some nice coin with this model if you have a good list of other services clients can pay full price for.

I built a ton of sites with that model, 99 cent sites on ebay too

That's the older model, the newer method is to charge 100-200 lifetime includes 5 page website with customized info.

If you're going to go through the trouble of setting up a wordpress themed site for an offline business for free, all for the $90 in commission you would earn, you're selling yourself short.... by a LOT.

I build sites on wordpress for offline clients and charge anywhere from $300 to $3000 for them... plus I make them sign up to my preferred host using my affiliate link and get my commission there as well.

Know what you're time is worth.. if your time is only worth $90 for a few hours of work, more power to ya I suppose. I'd rather provide a value, and get paid much more.

Oh, and for the clients that aren't takers on the wp sites at $300+ I have a different "no-cost" solution that I sell them that always makes more than $90 for me.

I agree, but perhaps this $90 commission could be fully automated, including the marketing of said product. So you get some $90 commissions each month without the effort of engaging with customers.

Most hosting accounts have wordpress auto-install, so you just need to provide an eBook saying how to do it and basic steps getting that set up. Then refer them to the headway theme for another $25 commission if they buy that too

I agree. But I planned on having my overseas team setup the wordpress sites and I'd add my content to the site.

Based on initial tests, my personal time used would be about 30 minutes. Of course that assumes I can figure out a passive way to sell it which doesn't require a ton of my own time direct-selling. Brainstorming that aspect in the back of my mind nowadays.

What's your no cost solution that makes more than $90. I'm intrigued...

Even if it only takes you 30 min to set up, you would still need to do a very large volume of them to make any great money... and when you do a huge volume, you have a huge number of customers that require support. There is a ceiling there.

To each his own I suppose.

I suppose I should have clarified, it's no up front cost, not no cost entirely.

My no up front cost option for them is to purchase leads on demand. It's performance based, so they only pay when they see results in the form of leads.

I've found that most of the time, business owners think that they're going to put up a site and magically start to see business coming from online. When they don't, they think you did a crappy job as their web guy. So, I use that in my sales process.

A business owner can have a website setup with no marketing involved for as little as $300 and as high as $3000 depending on what functionality they want... but this DOES NOT INCLUDE any marketing work. If they want that, they pay me monthly and keep me on retainer.

If that's too rich for their blood, I assess their goals.

"Mr Jones, what exactly are you hoping to get out of your website?"

"I want to see leads flowing from the internet gods!"

"Well, Mr Jones, there are 2 ways for that to happen. 1. Have an exceptional marketing campaign for a website that I can build for you, or 2. Pay per lead and let me take on the risk of building and marketing a website for you. Which would you prefer?"

Most times, it leads to a client that wants leads... which is fine by me, because I make more money that way.

Second, I own the asset, and can sell it later (to them, or to another investor that wants built in revenue).

If this business owner is someone that wants to see performance, it is most likely that they will take the leads campaign.

If they just want an online business card (which happens quite a bit) then I build them a site for a one time fee and help them when they want to add things or whatever (for cost). If my one time fee is too much for them, I try and work out a payment plan. If it's still a no-go, then the client is likely to end up being more of a pain in my ass than it's worth because they're too fixated on costs.

Cheap clients are the ones that call you at 10PM needing something done ASAP and don't want to pay you to make it happen. These are not the clients I want to work with.

I have to ask what is the difference between a $300
WP site and a $3000 WP site, which is 10 times the price?

      Thanks

        Functionality mostly.

Do they want a theme install and an online business card?

        Or

Do they want a custom theme with integration to their proprietary software and all kinds of bells and whistles to go along with it?

It all depends on what they want the site to do. I'm not just out there charging people $3000 to put up a WP blog and install a pretty theme... those are the $300 sites.

Many hosting affiliate programs won't allow this type of business anymore.
I guess you could get a reseller account and start your own hosting biz.

Interesting. Yes, I thought this might count as an incentive re: their terms of promotion for their affiliate program. But it's not noted on their terms specifically. I've emailed a few of their affiliate programs to ask and am awaiting response. I've still done quite a few of these deals without a problem, so maybe my hosting company doesn't mind.
