The Shady Side of Article Marketing

There is much talk about the effectiveness of article marketing in getting backlinks to your site, and so on. but I am noticing a trend in my own stats.

Let me put it bluntly: article marketing doesn't work like it used to despite all the pomp and fanfare of those promoting related products.

Now before I gave you the proof I want to give you a little background.

More than a year ago I began using article marketing and had moderate success with it. In fact, it helped me to get decent backlinks to my sites and increase my Adsense income. I know I had backlinks because I use a programs that shows how many backlinks my sites have. In fact, most of these backlinks are still with the sites.

Lately, my submissions seem to go into a deep, dark hole and the expected backlinks do not materialize. I began noticing the trend last summer but did nothing until now.

Today I took three articles I recently submitted to less than five article directories. I logged into one of the directories and found these stats:

Article #1: downloaded 128 times

Article #2: downloaded 148 times

Article #3: downloaded 32 times

However, out of the three articles I have no more than 5 backlinks.

One website was kind enough to publish one of my articles, but separated the resource box from the article with two 3-inch sq. vertical image ads. This webmaster also included a "no follow" tag with the backlink.

This tells me (but I could be wrong) that somebody is downloading my articles but not posting them, or spinning them and then posting, or just enjoy downloading good articles.

My suspicion is many people are downloading and spinning articles and using them as their own.

Perhaps I should just join the band wagon and rewrite other people's articles!

That is one thought, but with the ability of Google, et al., to recognize "spun" articles, I would bet it's more like "research" and your article is undergoing a rewrite before use.

I sure as heck wouldn't spin someone else's article. That is such a waste of time it becomes dumb. Example, spun PLR. But re-written PLR has a chance.

True, ideas are cheap. This is why you cannot really stop "article-copier and editor", and neither is it possible for us to track down the copyright issues merely by the articles or words.

However, for me, I would have quote or cite from the source I have taken. Not everyone do it. This is why this "problem" will always exist.

Just make sure that the article marketing works well for your website, and nothing else matters. Citation is not in the dictionary to many internet users and marketers in the world.

The article directories are getting flooded with junk. I was looking at one of my articles the other day, and started to explore several others on the same subject. Well, I was a bit perturbed to find that there were a bunch of spun articles there, many by the same author, and none of them grammatically correct!

It's terrible that poorly written (spun) articles are allowed into the directories at all. They should be weeded out for the benefit of everyone, marketers and readers alike.

Unfortunately there are some people out there who take articles from article directories and publish them without their resource boxes. I've found some of mine by doing a search in google for the exact title, then I've left a comment that included my website address.

Once I found one of my articles on Helium and it had been voted as number one in it's category. I emailed Helium with my 'evidence' and they removed the article and banned the poster.

I resubmitted the same article myself and it went straight to number one again.

But the fact remains that some people do take articles and pass them off as their own without rewriting a single word.

I don't mind people using articles for 'research,' even professional writers do that, and I don't frown at the practice of spinning. What I am after, I guess, is whether I should continue wasting money with writing articles for articles directories.

Actually, I recently bought one of Dean Shainin's WSOs and like his approach to article marketing. If what he says works, then I would have to write fewer articles and get more value for my money.

I don't seem to get nearly the number of articles published on other sites as I did 2 - 3 years ago. Judging by the ezine publisher numbers on EZE (who knows how accurate those stats really are) there's been a huge decline in the last 12 months. In 2005 - 2006 it was normal to get at least 30 - 50 publishes, with some over 100. Now it seems like 1 - 4 is the norm, with some cracking double digits if I'm lucky.

Another interesting note is that I regularly get quite a bit of traffic from my articles on eze itself, but rarely, if ever see any visitors in my stats from any of the other directories. I also use the other usual suspects; GoArticles, ArticleDashboard, ArticleAlley, etc.

After reading so much about how EZA is getting filled up with so many bad articles, a couple of questions come to mind:

    1. How are all these bad articles getting approved, when it only takes a small thing (seemingly) to keep your article from being published there?

    2. Do you think that maybe there will be a trend for more targeted prospects to move toward niche directories that provide more good info on the subject they are researching?

Maybe things like this are affecting your results.

    Just wondering...

      Ummmm...

      Let's see now...

Authors are petrified of the big bad evil duplicate content demon.

While at the same time worrying that none of their articles are being published on other sites (or published by black hatters who bypass the resource box).

Articles which nobody wants to publish because they have read in articles and forum posts that the big bad evil duplicate content demon will pay them a visit if they do.

In case you haven't noticed, I don't believe in the duplicate content penalty as preached by the vast majority of internet marketers... :p

But I agree you don't get the backlinks from article you used to - it's not that the sites are being filtered, it's because less webmasters publish reprint rights articles on their websites.

Let's face it, us internet marketers have been preaching the virtues of using unique content only and the sins of PR bleed for so long, most webmasters believe them to be "gospel".

With all this unique content being used, our articles don't get published any more and our "convert" webmasters sites are still being ignored the search engines...

        Opportunitiesaplenty,

You are correct, I still have high regard for EA but submitting to Article Dashboard and Go Articles still confounds me.

I agree with Colin. I have done lots of testing in the area of duplicate content and I've found that duplicate content only becomes a problem if you use it on your site (the same content on several pages of your site) or if you clone your site using different domain names.

Regarding submitting the same articles to several directories, I'll give you an example, I've submitted the same article to several directories on the same day. For the long tail keyword that article is in 7 of the positions on the first page of Google. It's the same article and get this, someone copied the article and put it on her site (with no backlink I might add) and her article is also on the first page of Google (I contacted her hosting company about her copyright infringement).

OK, that being said, I have other articles that were submitted to the same directories and only one of the copies of the article shows up. The rest usually end up in the supplemental index. I think Google just likes keeping us confused.

In the past few years, article marketing really works great.
However, everybody is into it now, and everyone is doing the same thing,
you must do it differently in order to stand out from the rest.

Don't forget that the moment you are submitting your article, there are a lot
more people are doing the same thing just like you, they are submitting
    their articles as well.

So think out of the box and do thing differently.

    Batchos,

As long as you don't take the exact article and call it your own. There is no illegal or even an unethical activity committed. How is adapting someone else's idea bad?

Repackaging already successful ideas is a excellent way to generate more content. 37signals made over $750,000 by repackaging their content three times in various formats. There is no reason why you shouldn't do that with others' content.

Spinning is not bad or low quality in anyway. When you attach the "computer" generated and "automated" part to generating content people automatically assume you are a spammer. Spinning articles improves your visibility.

Think of it this way - if you genuinely believe your site or product is real value to its visitors or buyers, then you should do everything you can ethically to make the most people see your articles that includes spinning articles and submitting them to many article directories.

If backlinks are your primary motivation for doing article marketing, try a service like Article Marketers. Distribution is what you probably want more than posting to a directory like EZA, given what you've laid out as growing problems with it. It's pretty cheap and might be worth a test.
