How do you handle echecks?

If somebody pays for your product with an echeck, do you send the product right away? How does it work?

Somebody recently bought a product of mine with an echeck and the payment never made it through (yet they got the product...)

When I receive an echeque as payment for physical products I sell on ebay I generally wait for the cheque to clear before sending the product. Normally takes 3-5 days to clear.

When it's a digital product it's a bit different. If when you initially set up and configured your paypal button to direct the customer to your download page after the transaction has been completed, then regardless of whether it's an echeque or standard payment the customer will automatically be directed there.

The echeque may 'bounce' but the customer still gets their hands on your product.

This is from my experience as a vendor, other warriors may have had different experiences.

Hope this makes sense to you and helps.

    Garry.

As a service provider, it's a lot different for me too - I rely on the payment clearing, otherwise I've done the work for nothing. So, I will only begin work once the eCheque has cleared... that is, unless I've worked with the person before.

    Kindest regards,
    Karl.

    Wait for payment to clear.

You have to watch that once you accept one, you may get a flood of them that will bounce. I had this issue with fraudulant orders, I had 15 in a week span which was more then any given month or few months. So set the standard and wait for it to be clear. Often customers done realize the hold, if they call, give them the option to do credit card instead.

Don't take the damn things. They are a pain, as far as I can tell. I used to get them on occasion when I sold on eBay. You can't refuse them for an eBay sale from what I understand, but you can turn them off in your PayPal account for everyone else. I don't remember the process to turn them off, but if you check with PayPal support, they can tell you. It is somewhere in your preferences. And once you turn them off, they don't appear as an option for payment, unless it is an eBay transaction.

If they can write you an eCheck, they can do a direct withdrawal from their bank account. The direct withdrawal will clear immediatly, yet the eCheck will take three to five days. Just turn them off and you will not have to worry about delivering the product later, or getting screwed out of the money.

If you use a download management system such as DLGuard, you can control this side of things.

DLGuard by default will withhold the download until the echeque clears. Once it's cleared, it'll send the download link to the customer automatically.

You can turn that option off, if you want, and just deliver instantly, but by default DLGuard will withhold the download if the money doesn't hit your Paypal account.
