Why you need more than one Hosting account

I here a lot of newbies talking about how now that they have a few websites/blogs, that all they have to do now is link all the sites to each other and they'll each get a nice boost from Gaggle in their SERPS.

Well, thats simply wrong.

You see, if all of your links come from web sites that are hosted in the same place, on the same IP address (ie. if they are all on your one shared hosting account), or even on different Class C IP addresses that are just too geographically close to one another other, Gaggle will ignore the links.

Because Gaggle knows what you're doing. So what to do?

Have a few different hosting accounts. I have five actually, but at even $10/mth per account its still a reasonable cheap $50 a month.

...also make sure all your links are one way. Don't start interlinking with reciprocal linking, it will defeat the purpose.

So if you can afford it, do open more than 1 or even 2 hosting accounts. Believe me it'll be worth the few extra $$$ each month in the long haul.

Just my opinion, based on what I have been taught.

Managing bills from different accounts and making payment for each of it is cumbersome. I don't know about you, but there is a good chance that I may forget to renew one account if I have 10 accounts.

For me, I just stick to maximum two hosting accounts so that if one server goes down I can just change the DNS and install the wp database and bring the site back up again. But that hasn't happened yet... anyway having 2 gives a sense of comfort.

Every time I build a website on my shared hosting acount it seems really hard to get good ranking on google vs building a new website on a different hosting account. I don't know if this is the reason for my poor rankings but it seems like it is.

    Cheers

...and all your sites still have your name, address, email, phone with the domain name registration? Remember, Google got their domain registrar license so they can read also (hidden?) whois records. Having just different hosting accounts is not gonna fool them.

      Hi,

Milan is right. Just get yourself a domaintools account and see how easy it is for those of us who don't even have Google's reach to connect websites via whois details like contact email, company name, address. You can do it via Google search most of the time, without domaintools.

Also Sandeep, again you offer unreliable info -

Managing bills from different accounts and making payment for each of it is cumbersome. I don't know about you, but there is a good chance that I may forget to renew one account if I have 10 accounts.
It's about as cumbersome as setting up the paypal subscriptions, then totally forgetting about it.

I know, I have been running five hosting accounts for years.

Really, I didn't know this. Kind of defeats my purpose then.

      Good info.

I apologize for providing inaccurate info.

      Thanks again

I don't believe registrars can read the private whois records of other registrars.

The private whois info should be secure as long as no law enforcement authority is looking for it.

In general it's no bad idea to have more than one hosting location.
If your income is mainly web based you risk a lot if you put all your cards in one pocket

Hm, I read somewhere that they can and just assumed it was true. But I don't know any authority info to confirm or deny. So, sorry if I'm wrong. Folks, don't believe anything you read on forums
The info on Google being a domain registrar is correct for sure (and they don't let you buy domains from them, they just need the benefits).

As for the topic and my point, it's still valid if you strike the word private.

I doubt that Google has access to private whois information.

Here is a service that provides different class c ip's for each domain you have - and it is all accessible from one WHM control panel. It is a Hostgator company. You will pay approx $5 per class c address, so it is cheaper than buying hosting from separate companies.

I have no affiliation with this company.

Well since this is physically impossible, you are more likely getting a supernet which is a subnet of a subnet. Their site mentions nothing about the "how". I would be weary of these because one wrong late night config can bring down the entire supernet at once.

              Do tell.

Could you elaborate on that? I just assumed that since hostgator has so many servers/IP's, it would be easy for them to assign seperate "real" class c IP's for you to use to host each individual site. And tying everything into one WHM console shouldn't be a problem either. Unless I am missing something...

Well I should have said improbable not impossible. Like I said their site is slim on the how. With the so called shortage of IP4 addresses I find it improbable. In any event the adage of all of ones eggs in one basket comes to mind. Having worked in a global NOC for many years I can tell you that when the network goes down peoples arse is on the line. And I have heard from the other end of the phone many times, "How did the config on the router change?" Often the answer is, No-one knows. I only skimmed the site but I don't recall seeing the Up-time any where. Say you have 20 sites with them and they give a 99% up time rate. Well, 365 a year, thats a possible 3.65 days times 20=73 days of downtime. For 20 sites. You might want to minimize your risk to one provider. Call and ask them how they do it.

well, If you had a big enough business, you could have each account under a different corp name with different emails and address........phone numbers also would be easy to setup......if its worth it to you.

I just checked my accounts, I actually have my first under my personal name and then 3 under one corp and 1 under another corp.......so i guess i might have lucked out,,,who knows.

Not to mention that if you are using adsense or google webmaster tools you have just revealed your whole cache of sites to them!
