  If you have a Windows OS, try Microsoft Essentials. It has had the best reviews of any MS product I've ever seen and it was beta tested by an IT pro friend of mine. If he recommends it, I get it. It is free if you use Windows.

  Try Avira it's catching up with AVG as a leader in the industry, and it does a good job at protecting. Although ensure malware protection tools are also installed and used regulalry.

I found that using either OSX or Linux is very rewarding experience. Things just tend to work - and both are immune to viruses and similar stuff.

My wife is quite happy with Ubuntu linux on her laptop.

I Agree with AVAST. Avast Home is free, but the paid version is better if you're willing to pay a few bucks. Been using it for a few years and so far so good.

Some people wear by AVG and it is a good starter virus scanner I agree, but avast is also excellent...

Just never use Norton, they trap you into paying and it is awkward to remove.

I don't get it... no one has said anything about AVG no longer being FREE...

Maybe it's just me.. but after 4 yrs of using AVG, they finally said they were discontinuing their free version so I downloaded avast and am pretty happy with it.

  We started with AVG Free 9 years ago. 4 years ago we upgraded to the paid anti virus/firewall. We like the service. Very professional. Very effective. It automatically updates the anti virus database every day. That's the good news.
  
  The bad news is, AVG has grown in 25 years to 80 million clients worldwide. They have, in the process, insulated themselves from their client base. EVen tho their website talks about the many ways 'to contact us', it becomes a giant wheel spin, wasting many days, and ending with no real contact made. And it's by design. They don't want a lot of trivial questions tieing up their techs time.
  
  We just renewed our license for 2 years for two computers. The Version 9.0 download/install on my machine worked fine. I have been trying for 2 weeks now to get a successful install on my wife's machine, and it just won't work. After a week and a half of 'no response', I sent an email to Sales, threatening to quit and move on to another company. Suddenly the techs woke up and got back to me.
  
  The problem is, I've now heard from 4 different techs, who obviously don't talk to each other, providing the same basic instructions. And the computer, as this written, remains without protection, problem unfixed.
  
  Be aware...AVG provides great protection but just don't experience a problem. You will spend many an angry frustrating hour wishing you had gone with another company. And the above scenario is the second time in four years this has happened.
  
  I'm about to bite the bullet and jump to another company. I'm fed up.

I have to agree with John here, I have had a nasty virus on the laptop for a few weeks and have found using Microsoft anti-virus Security Essentials has fixed it for now as every time it goes to change its on it ASAP and cleans the virus till next time.

I am not a great fan of MS but this one works well and have tried the others mentioned but this will do me and no false positives.

I paid for the super duper version of AVG and still got several Trojans. I had to reformat twice while using it. I got the Free version of AVAST and have had absolutely no trouble at all. And this thing lights up like a Christmas tree when anything buggy gets near. Highly recommended.

Right now I'm using kaspersky free trail, and it does a solid job.. In just this trial period of only like 15 days.. It has already decteded about 39 viruses, 3 Trojans, 3 adware, and 13 riskware.. Kinda doing its job. I'm a big downloader so this has been doing just fine.

Before using kaspersky free trail, I was using avast and this anti-virus is pretty solid to.. Also what I like about it, is when first installing it it will scan your whole computer right before it starts up... Avast has a better dection rate than avg, and avira... Which are like the 3 top free anit-viruses. Avast has a easy interface too, ovraill it will do its job at it's fair rate.

Also Google this: "google pack"

and download there Spyware Doctor with Anti-Virus FREE.. This is what I'm using along with the kaspersky free trail.

Be sure to get a free firewall too. SuperAnti-Spyware along with Commando are both good and have a free verison.

Avast! has worked great for me this year, I switched from AVG. I also run Malwarebytes anti-malware (free version) about once a month, just to verify my system is clean. SUPERAntiSpyware (free version) is also recommended, if needed for spyware detection/removal.

Another vote for AVG Free. I've used it since version 7 with no problems (current version is 9).

One tip: You don't want to use the AVG LinkScanner option.

The best way to avoid it is to not install it in the first place.

When installing AVG choose "Custom installation".
Choose "Add or remove components".
Uncheck AVG Search-Shield.
Finish the installation Wizard.

Becareful with the automatic file system protection setting on ALL security software.

What happens with the auto protect file system feature in most security software is that it temporarily locks files at first access, creation, deletion etc... And if you happen to be saving a file, creating a new file, backing up files at the same instant the security software file system protection is scanning the files it is possible for files to corrupt and in the worst case be unable to be removed, copied or moved from the file system.

I was lucky enough to find a 3rd party software that would help me get rid of these corrupted files and it took me a long time to track down the cause of the problem.

Having the automated file system protection enabled from my personal experience in certain situations can cause you headaches. I turned this feature off in the current security software I use because it too was causing file access error messages to appear in windows 7. After searching many sites and possible solutions which went from possible hard disk failure to viruses and operating system corruption, I remembered my problem with the file protection feature of the previous security software I used.

Turn this feature off when you do backups of your files every time or also when you save files from internet and you get a file permissions error that says something about not being able to access file. This is the file system protection feature of your antivirus software interfering with proper access of the file system for the purpose of protecting your computer from nasties out there on the internet, viruses etc...

From what I can tell, all antivirus software now has this feature and they all behave similarly though some are more tenacious about it than others which is why it is possible for your file system and operating system to become corrupted. Backups of your file system when this feature is active will result in corruption and in my case every time. Didn't know that until I had to restore the hard disk from a recent backup and then, BAM!!! Major corrupted operating system and files, no signs of the corruption until after I restored from it and then... Screwed Major!

Had to go buy a new computer because of it and then in spare time work on the broken system to get it working from multiple variations of backups and a lot of patience and technical support I had to do myself, there is no manual or help out there to get through what I had to recover from.

Never want to go through that again.

Long story to say becareful witht he automatic file system protection feature of these security software on the market now, free and paid versions.

Try Avast Home Edition (its free). On registration you get a serial key with which you can use the anti-virus without any restrictions for a whole year. I have been using Avast for about 6 months now and its turned out to be very good.

I work for an IT department for a medium sized company. We are utilizing the Microsoft Forefront product on 400+ machines it has been great! For the home user the same product is Microsoft security essentials. Best of all it is free.
