Question about Google Analytics

by cypherslock 6 replies
I've got a question: A colleague of mine who has more experience than I do in IM (khuram Dhanani) mentioned that google analytics will severely hurt your traffic if installed. I was wondering if anyone else has similar views. Its the first I've heard of it, but figured I should get second (and third and fourth) opinions. He did recommend an alternative in statcounter.

Does google analytics hurt traffic? I thought it was supposed to be a way for you to see what traffic you're getting? A bit confused here. I do have a site and would love to know stats. If anyone would like to comment on the page, please feel free. its at Information and Resources for Cancer: Breast, Colon, Prostate, Lung and Other Forms Its my first attempt at this (with khurams help). I have already gotten a bite, which is good. Now I want to make sure it gets better, so I can flip the whole thing.

Thanks gang
Cypher

I think your friend is pulling your leg. Ask him to elaborate
on how inserting a piece of tracking code into your html will
cause people to stop clicking through from the search engine
    listing...

If he is I'll kick his butt. He's supposed to be teaching me. not fooling around. Is there any downside that you can see to using it as opposed to say statcounter? I'm probably overanalyzing (again) but I'm here to learn and DO so any wisdom you could share would be awesome.

No... I don't see any downside.

It's a freakin' string of code... lol... assuming your friend isn't pulling
your leg he'd have to believe that one of the following is true...

      1. For some odd reason people don't click links from search results
because they contain this code... even though they can't see it...

      2. Google is purposely not bringing your site up in the search results
because you're using the code they encourage you to use... so you're
      not getting traffic

      Does either sound plausible?

        Forgot to add this...

If your friend seriously believes that using google analytics
hurts traffic you need a new teacher... lol

Can't WAIT to hear his explanation for this.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how a bit of tracking code would affect your traffic one way or the other.

Would be interesting to hear the reason why.

It'd have to be like the other search engines finding the code and penalizing the site, don't see that happening.
