And ideas will be greatly received :-)

    1. Ask for them.

    2. End your blog post with an open ended question.

    3. Run a contest where you give something away to a random commenter.

    4. Tell your blog readers that you are thinking about what to write next and ask them for ideas.

I just took a look at your blog...you've written a very good post, and it's looks like you're off to a good start with comments -- congrats!

Here are a couple of ideas:
        • Join the forum at TreeHugger.com and other "green" forums, make some friends and advertise your blog.
        • Also, set up a Twitter account especially for your blog and get active. There's a huge number of "greenies" on Twitter who love to support one another. (Go to Twitter Search and plug in your favorite green keywords for ideas about who to follow.)

        Cheers!

Well teh best way is that ask for them. Or of course you can do polls or structure your blog post in a way that your askign a question? or if people could help you out with something.

It occurs to me that leaving comments is beneficial for all involved. Lots of comments are left with their link so they may get extra exposure just for signing on.

Heya, try writting the odd controversial post or something
totally out of the blue. For example James Schramko made
a post titled "7 things Killer Bunnies and German Fetish Porn
can teach us about buzz marketing" not only did he get a
bunch of comments but also a heap of traffic.

Like KristiDaniels said leave an open ended question, like "what's your opinion?" or "have your say..." or "what do you reckon?" or "agree or disagree?"

first of all, just go through the post on blog or even think over the title and the first paragraph of the blog post, then answer according to the post and your answer should be 100 % relevant to the original post on the blog, and end up at any informative thing...

I don't necessarily have an answer to the above question. I just wanted to say thank you for asking the question. I was wondering the same thing the other day and didn't remember to ask. There are some really good suggestions here. Thanks

Check out digg.com and see what controversial headlines are pulling the audience.

Use a controversial headline like that to grab eyeballs.

You can then have a 'debate' in the comments section (like the warrior threads).

James hit it on the head. Gauher Chaudry had a post about Google the other day regarding how they did a mass cancellation of many Adwords advertisers. He went off on how they have no respect for their customers which I would have to agree with in this case.

The point is that at the end of this heated post, he asked for comments. Of course people commented because what Google did seemed really out of line. So, the more controversial the topic, the more people want to put their 2 cents in. A really good strategy for getting comments.

    Hi burtie,

Asking people to leave a comment is a great start, but you need to make sure you give them a clear and concise call to action.

If you have used FreeCycle or are planning on using it over the festive break, please post your comments in the box below to encourage others to use this amazing service!

Also, some people are more likely to comment if you enable "do follow" and utlilize a plug in such as Comment Luv or one of the many other ones around now.

I second what Kristi and James said; those are great tips.

I've also gotten success when I've posted something of a more personal nature -like something I tried and how it worked or what I learned or how I screwed up. People like to compare notes, commiserate, or congratulate. Those are easier comments for others to make because they're quick. How would you deal with climate change deniers calls for more thinking before commenting and you'll lose some people.

      1) Post on current hot subject. Use Google and Twitter trends for selection.

      2) Announce prize for the best comment.

      3) Ask lot of questions in the blog post.

      Good Luck.

Okay, I posted a comment on Freecycle but Comment Luv doesn't appear to be working.
You can test it yourself too, by signing out as administrator and start to leave a comment. You should see a little blurb saying what your last blog post was, before you even enter the comment. That's provided you have another blog URL you can put in the "website" spot.

Aha! It appears my Comment Luv is not working on my blog for some reason, that would explain it. Time to troubleshoot...

Ensuring you post as a question. Leave them wanting to answer. Especially if it's controversial. Check out Digg to see what's hot and current. Anything in the news is good.

Blog looks good and see a few comments already

You can pretty much get your visitors engaged by:

    - Simply asking them to participate
    - Ask them what their opinions are
    - Ask questions (it's important to stay away from the easy "yes/no" questions)
    - Run a contest
    - Provide incentives
    - Blog about something your audience is passionate about

    Just my 2 cents...

Perhaps you could actually make your Blog Post Title an open ended question, that incites thought/ mild controversy?....(that people are destined to have an opinion about)

    ...p.s nice blog layout
