Is this getting YOUR goat?

Over and over again, I see the same emails from marketers which ALL start the same way:

"RE: (Subject Line Here)"

I immediately know not to open them because - I never sent them an email in the first place, so how can they be sending me a response back?

This annoys the hell out of me and I always considering opting out from someone's list when I see this

Is anyone else thinking the same thing?

The trick might works well for some newcomers. but not for ppl who opt in various list.

Its not that annoying for me since I dont bother to check em up. Well not sure. I just dont really care.

This will and does work for many hence they continue to do it.

If someones relationship with their list isnt great then they have to think of ways to get the subject line to do its job, and that put simply is to get the subscriber to open the email.

I do use the Re: in emails but only when Im following up with my list, so if I had sent the day before - Your no cost training

The following day I may well send- Re: Your no cost training

So it all depends how it is being used, but it does get results

    I got one recently:

    Re: our meeting

I was actually somewhat interested in the content of the email but I deleted it instead of clicking thru just because of the title.

There's a good tip for list owners in this thread: stop abusing your list!

I guess I get why some marketers do silly crap like this, but it's ultimately counter-productive. It increases list attrition, and it gives you a bad reputation. Makes no sense at all for anyone striving to build a long-term business.

I always thought it meant "regarding", not as a reply.

In any case, it honestly doesn't matter what you think because your opinion doesn't matter one bit. Not you personally...I mean individual subscribers' opinions. Advertisers don't give a crap what random people think and big list owners usually don't either. It would be foolish to change their marketing just to please a minority of people.

That tactic is being used too often by spammers now to be considered effective. It might still work for some people because Re is still just short for "Regarding" and not only "Reply."

@Curtis I have to disagree with you, there a LOT of big marketing gurus who have burned there lists and are insolvent now because of it. They need to change there tactics as there list matures, and the people on the list mature.

Well, people can do whatever they want to do unless they are in jail.

I don't do that but I will say this: if I knew it would make me some serious money over the next year, I might consider the most outrageous risks. I would never intentionally jeopardize the long term health of my list, though.

I immediately unsubscribe from anybody who does this.

I do the same thing for any email that says "You have a payment" in the subject and then in the body it goes on to say "... that's what your emails could be saying if you promote this product!"

It's amazing how many people do these types of things, though. I think I'm on a total of about 5 lists these days as a result.

No, it doesn't bug me. Seems like such a tiny detail to get upset about.

My favorite is the overused "Thankyou!" email that Kern started. Worked great but it is old now. "Sorry" seems to be the latest one word subject line. Maybe "huh?" will be the next big thing.
