Don't make the same mistake I did with URL forwarding.

LOL, I'm such a newb.

I've never bought a domain before and wanted to set one up to use it to forward to an affiliate site. This is so Ezine will accept my links.

I mistakenly thought that I would need a hosting company to handle the forwarding. What I didn't know is that my domain registrar lets you forward for free. I found this out after I already paid for a month of hosting fees. I was able to get a partial refund, but still needlessly wasted money.

Moral of the story... If you purchase a domain for the sole purpose of forwarding it, check with your registrar if they provide this service for free.

If I at least save one person from making the same mistake, I'll feel better about my screw up. :p

What was your hosting company? That seems like something that should be free be default.

The company was justhost.com. They did refund me for the hosting cost. But the $20 setup fee is non-refundable. No fault on them, because they were upfront about that.

$20 for setup sounds expensive. At least you figured it out, right?

So true! Also you can always just call the domain company like godaddy and ask them if you need hosting etc.

Also if you dont want to buy a new domain fr every product, just use wordpress and the free prettylink plugin. You can create extensions like www.yourdomain.com/guitarpics for free. Pretty cool plugin.

Why not use the hosting account to set up a brief squeeze page asking them to opt in to your mailing list? You could pass them on to the affiliate after getting their info.

The hosting fee would have been trivial compared to the value of a good marketing list.

Yeah, I'll most likely end up experimenting with a list when I find a niche that I want to actaually brand myself with.

For now article marketing with redirects fit my needs nicely. I don't want to fall into the trap that a lot of new marketers do and try too many things at once.

If you are just starting you should use the combination NameCheap.com + Globat.com. NameCheap is a great registrar, and Globat is a offers unlimited hosting for $100/year and no set up fee (when you create your account you also get 1 domain and a $50 AdWords coupon).

Yea I 2nd namecheap.com for domains. I am slowly moving all my godaddy account there. Namecheap is just so much easier and user friendly to use.

Hostgator is awesome! customer service and ease of use. very user friendly and I can create a wordpress site with it in less than 5 minutes.

Just from memory, but Cory Rudle (sp?) said something like "Worried about making mistakes? Let me put you at ease about that. You will make mistakes." Really impressed me, I thought "that guy has been around."
