Building A List - I Need Ideas!

I am building my list,
It is growing by 20 people a day,
but I want to do better than that...

So to help myself, and others, I would love it if someone knowledgeable would post here with tips, tricks, sites, programs, and whatever ideas they have that work to build lists.

So Far I have Been Using:
ListJoe
Free Traffic Bar
Auto Surfs (just to squeeze pages not websites)
ScreenSaver Traffic
WSO's (of course)
A Few Free Ad Forums
Sniper Sites

Any other suggestions, ideas, tweaks, etc... are welcome!

Probably one of the fastest ways to grow a list is through JV ad-swaps. It takes a little more time but can be well worth it.

Fair enough Alexa, I don't take constructive criticism like a blow, every opinion matters.

However, I am targeting other people in internet marketing. My list is to help- people grow their businesses and succeed. I plan to monetise it by only promoting programs I have used, like, and one that actually help you make more money.

I don't plan to spam every big name product to these people for pure profit. (I am WAY too nice in the IM world, I know.) So that is why I was using those methods, other marketers and hopefuls use them.

      I appreciate your input.

Here is a very good strategy that is useful for building an opt-in list.

It was designed to be used with affiliate and other product sales but can easily be adapted to list building by substituting a squeeze page for the pre-sell page.

It seems to be in harmony also with the traffic generating methods you've been following to date:

If I were you, I would learn how to approach list building utilizing more fundamental and proven marketing strategies such as article marketing, video marketing and forum marketing just to name a few.

This way, you build a quality list, though the growth rate of your list may vary, in comparison to your current methods of list building, your list that has been built via the fundamental way of list building will outperform your current list that has been built via the methods you currently utilize regardless of the size of your current list any day of the week.

Actually aside from article marketing I do have videos up as well as forum marketing going ( I am here after all!).

I am so busy writing content for my clients I barely have time for my own. I also work from home as an SEO director hehe.

I definitely agree with Chris on video marketing. It's pretty much made a difference to how I approach IM.

Although I don't use it for list building, video marketing can get you so many subscribers in so many different niches. It's about how you approach it though. There are certain things that will help convert people from Youtube or other video sharing sites.

It is definitely something you should consider.

Lawrence here. I have tried to get JVs set up, but have not had any luck. One problem is of course, I don't have a list of any sort to recipocate with, so not getting very far. Any suggestions on how to get a JV with no list of my own?

    Victoria,

My favorite two methods are article marketing and forum marketing. I send traffic to a simple squeeze page, give away a free report, and sometimes I'll work in an OTO in the process to try to get a little bit of up front money for my efforts. Test it, of course.

The reason I like article and forum marketing traffic the best is the quality of the signer-uppers. Highly targeted and often very motivated folks. Works great for niche list building. I'll be adding a couple of continuity memberships into the mix in 2010 to see how that goes.

Test your squeeze page elements to maximize the sign-up conversion rate. Traffic matters, of course, but the fewer you "waste" the more bang you'll get for your buck (time).

As stated above, doing an ad swap can build you a list quite quickly. But you have to make sure your ad swap partner is in the same niche to build a targeted list. You may find my site (in signiture) useful.

Yes Adam, actually I "Do" use ListSwapper. I found it about a week ago and have since set up a few campaigns. Thank you

Aaron - Articles and PR no...

Everyone, The free stuff like listjoe and auto surfs do not get my sites much quality traffic, however I have had sign-ups from there make me money in the past, so I do it. I just have a spare laptop running to the side and I dont watch ads (like most people, this I know) but it's hands free.. so..

As for video marketing if you check out my signature and follow that to my website I actually have an interview with a well respected marketer up there, I agree it's useful and I get positive feedback often. I do video reviews for some of my niche products and that also helps me make money.

Ivan I will check out reviews of Google Pump.. but I do not know much about that yet, thanks.

Thanks Craig, I will check it out.

      Thank you Sean, good idea.

The sources you are using now can and will get a lot of targeted customers if you realize two things .

1: You have to understand who you Are advertising to.

These are people clicking for credits . They are wanting visitors to their sites . they have the basic needs of all internet marketers .

Websites , hosting , autoresponders , email list . Give this to them for free and they will opt in.

2: They really want one thing and one thing only . TRAFFIC. Give them something that can provide a quick boost of traffic for an opt in. Sell them a permanent traffic solution .

Honestly , they can buy websites , hosting , and autoresponders . Unless they are lucky they have already been burned by ppc . This is the only paid traffic most know of .
They don't know where to buy traffic or the knowledge to get it naturally . Use traffic sites to push traffic . Sell the websites , hosting , and autoresponders ( and a lot more ) from list .

The single fastest way is to produce something that's REALLY valuable. Give it away for free. Then approach IMers that have a bigger list than you currently do and persuade them to give away you free product. Once your list gets larger, you can approach bigger marketers and leverage your newly acquired list by saying you'll help them out. And then leverage further etc.

Yo Victoria............having checked out your "stuff".... it appears you are a smart chick with some real talent....and since I'm a sucker for a pretty face and Warrior Diva's in distress et al.....here's my spin:

I think your entire premise (OP) is flawed....

It seems to me you are more interested in creating "quantity" rather then "quality"..... in regards to building your "list".....or "lists".

I say LIST'S....based on your response to the legendary Alexa....

Based on that response alone...I personally think your approach is way too scattered.....and your demographic/market.... is way too broad based.

In other words.....I still don't know what the hell the nuts and bolts of your offer is....and if I don't know....I wont buy.....but I'll waste your time.....and kick a lot of tires for you.

    Capiche?

People "interested in internet marketing" ain't no niche....it's a motley crue....consisting of gypsies, tramps, thieves, house wives, old people, starlets, and average joe's and I could go on forever.

Were I you'se......I find a sliver of a niche to hijack and take over...and build a list around it....... rather then trying to sell to the friggin' universe.

Cuz unless your pockets are really deep....you'll end up selling to NO ONE.

Believe me...."traffic" for the sake of "traffic"....is easy to create and it's a dime a dime a dozen, and about as useless.

I look to create qualified and targeted traffic......people who are actually are interested in my "compelling offer"...... enough to bang their credit card.....or the one they just snagged out their old lady's purse.

You can get traffic out of a friggin' phone book. Creating "numbers" is easy......"creating buyers".....is paramount if you intend to last in this game.

Your list is growing by 20 people a day......and that's great.

You'd be surprised how few people ON THIS VERY FORUM.... get those type of numbers in a life time...it sad but true.

My question to you is this: how many of them are BUYING SOMETHING?

My friend and partner Sylvia Rolfe.....we generate about 3 to 6 new names to our list each day........but the difference is.....they go through enough hoops to qualify themselves. (We are also marketing a high end product.)

We use a google friendly squeeze page or a dumb ass easy blogger blog that redirects to a squeeze page. All started via Google Adwords.

Long story short.....we dominate the BARTER AND BARTERING NICHE via google adwords......and it's worth every click.

People need to stop being so damn cheap....and start going from point a to z.....rather then wasting time trying to be clever.....because your time is valuable...peeps.

NO LESS THEN THE WARRIOR FORUM GODFATHER ALLEN SAYS.... ONCE SAID IN A POST......."WHY DON'T MORE OF YOU PEOPLE CONSIDER PAID TRAFFIC??"

If anyone of you'se grizzled warriors can find that post....please repost it...cuz it's required reading.

Truth is.......I see people spend and waste lifetimes trying to figure out to "out slick" the system......and generate free traffic.....most of it about as worthless as that shiny coin they sell on one of shopping club shows.

I personally like a tightly run little google adwords campaign.....which has literally run two of our competitors right out of the game because they can NOT compete with us.....no matter how high they bid. True.

And it's hands off. I don't screw with it at all....just email Syl for stat updates etc. That's it. Simple. Effective....but again......it does cost a few bucks.

So how bad do you "want it?" Market accordingly.

And we run under two broad keywords.....so the fact we continue to gangster slap companies with far larger budgets then ours....is a source of never ending joy for me.

But again...we have a targeted OFFER.......AND WE MAKE PEOPLE GO THROUGH HOOPS......TO GET ON OUR LIST.

We follow up with an aweber campaign with a sickening high open rate....and our list consists of buyers.

So while it's small.....it's golden. Because again....I'd rather have a list of 200 buyers then a list of 2,000,000 strokes, mooches, tire kickers, freebee seekers....and people who have to count their change to make sure they enough to order some boring ass 2 dollar ebook book on why Bumble Bees Bumble etc.

But that's still better then marketing to the entire world.....cuz that is a friggin' recipe for failure.

    Nuff said.

You got talent Miss Vicotoria......and unlike a lot of people around here...... your ass is actually IN THE GAME.

You're in the trenches DOING SOMETHING..... AND READY AIM FIRE..... IS BETTER THEN DOING NOTHING IN MY OPINION....BUT THAT'S JUST VINNIE'S SPIN.

Good for you...and best of luck to you, too. For real.

    p.s. Don't market to the world.....because it doesn't exist.

    Peace.

I would not waste my time with 1. Autosurfs and 2. Screensaver traffic Im sure your not looking at those ads when your cranking in credits and I am sure everyone else is not as well plus you always have your list of cheaters that use these sites to.

What works quick and produces over time is what is called Viral marketing. It takes a ton of work to do everything yourself but when you have others to back you up it make it that much better.

Option 1: Create an ebook and inside it give away a bit of information for free. Within it include your information for your opt in page for them to get even more information. Then spread it like wildfire over mininova and other like sites but mininova is a must as many other torrent directories feed from it.

Option 2: Have a product that you sell for money? Offer 1 or 5 free membership to it just for opting in to your page.

Option 3: Create an event and spread it on facebook and other like social networking sites. Have them optin to gain more information about what you are going to be speaking about or releasing on a certain date.

Option 4: On facebook? Add an opt in form to your facebook profile via MyHTML application.

Option 5: Give away events. Get a product in there for free in exchange for their information. These events produce some good numbers if you get your products in there early. Hello Victoria

      Heres my experience.

I have used all those methods you have tried and never really got me anywhere.

I do give away free products but i really dont get much out of it.

See i owned a traffic exchange for a few years and i have some experience in giving away free stuff.

Once you give it away they expect you to give more.

You want to attract buyers and in my opinion when you give away free stuff your not attracting buyers.

Your attracting broke people with no money to spend. Now not all of them are broke but a majority just want the free stuff for their own benefit.

Heres a test i have done.

I sent out a broadcast to over 3000 subscribers on my free giveaway.

      The title said this:

My Free Gift To You! Build Traffic For Free..

Well out of the 3000 subscribers i had about 38% click on the email.

      Then i did another test

      Here was the subject:
Get half off on my traffic building secrets! Today Only..

only 12% clicked. Made a few sales but these subscribers are not targeted.

They were targeted to get my free stuff.

      Get my point.

So here is what i use to build a targeted list.

I have been using this product for a few months now and it is one of the top in my eyes.

This system teaches you to target buyers and it has been bringing in traffic for me like crazy to 3 different sites i use.

You can check it out down below in my signature.

      Where it says:

Get Free Targeted Traffic To Your Site In 15 Minutes

      Hope this helps.

If you decide to use it i will also help you out with some tips and tricks that i do to convert my sales.

Keep in mind this is still free traffic.

Just targeted to what your niche is.

    Hi,
    Interesting thread.

The money is in the list........ what list? i know some who have thousands on their own list yet make zippity in sales so that is a non responsive list.

on the other hand there are people with only a few hundred and rake in lots of cash=responsive list.

It is not about the size but the quality and responsiveness of the herd that makes the difference. here is something you could do track your mailing. see what percent of them open the mail. one you know then you will know exactly what motivates them to click. so you target the list with opportunities or offers. i don't recommend other people's services in fact i have only done so once. just a few days ago for a fellow warrior who is struggling at the moment. however. if you can target your list with things that are helpful useful and not outrageously priced your list will become more responsive when you post your first targeted offer again track the email and see if they don't open up in a higher percentage if you give them something they need or have a desire in you will build a responsive list 20 folks a day signing up is great if 15 of the 20 buy something a huge list is meaningless if the herd doesn't produce cash.

One of the fastest way's that anybody can build a targeted list, and still make money by selling an affiliate program, is by conducting an interview with a relevant product owner in your niche. The main target is to do this with a new product lanuch coming out.

Just start doing interview's with other people in your niche, then have them promote the interview to there list. The person gets content for there list, you build a list and sell the affiliate program.

Excuse my ignorance in these matters as I am new... but why would a person with a list give their list away just for the content that they could probably make themselves or getting someone non-IM savvy to help create the interview, distribute it to their list and then make the sales of the product directly, thus avoiding paying out commission to an affiliate?

It doesn't make sense to me...

I find the sign ups from giveaways are usually pretty unresponsive. Probably because they've no doubt signed up to several lists at the same time.

Forum posting and ppc are great. For ppc write lots and lots of ads aimed at the content network with under 0.09ish cents as your max click cost. I find this will get you many ads that don't perform but 1 out of say 8-10 will jump out of the screen and get heaps of clicks for cheap!

  • Hi, Victoria

Congratulations on your progress! Keep up the good work...

Listbuilding for me is a blended offline/online effort. I offer free content, digital products, teleseminars, workshops, etc to offline organizations (nonprofits, industry associations, clubs, etc) that are in my niche/target market. I direct that traffic to my squeeze page.

Online I use a "multi-layered" approach primarily using social networking, free classified ads, viral videos, article marketing, and blogging.

    Hope that helps!

There is a lot of excellent advice in this thread.

I think it's great that you are actually DOING something already to get 20 opt-ins a day. That's over 7,000 a year. As others mentioned, though, quality is much more important than quantity - BUT if you can do both, that's pure gold!

    All the best,
    Michael

      Hi Victoria,

Congrats on your enthusiasm for what you're doing and getting out there and taking action.

I know Vegas Vince's advice might be a little harsh, but he's dead on the money. Your "niche" is waaay to broad and I think your list-building approach is way too scatter-shot to be very effective, especially if you're hoping to build a long-term business.

      So first, I'd

      1. Focus in much more tightly on a specific sub-niche of IM...and
      2. Spend some time choosing the ideal client for your new IM product/service

Once you do that, a VERY GOOD way to build a qualified list is to:

OFFER A CLASS on your chosen topic, specifically via phone -- a teleseminar

You can do this in one of two ways:

      1. Offer the class for FREE to build your list.

Make it as good as a paid class because you ARE going to sell it. (Make sure you've recorded it.) Only those who attend the live class get it for free. (Remember, the benefit to you is that you're building your list.) You'll sell the recorded class on the backend. Now you have a product and something to sell. (So make sure it's good.)

      2. Offer a PAID class

If you're just starting, this might get you a smaller list, but it IS a good way to make some quick money and start building your list. If you don't have a list (or much of a list), you can either find forums populated by your target market (like the WF) and/or someone who already serves your target market but doesn't directly offer competing services and offer your class to them.

      3. A third way to use a tele-class to build a list is to offer a free class on a product/service you're offering. Basically, the class is just an expanded sales presenation. The trick is to give out good information during your presentation so that attendees feel like their time has been well-spent instead of wasting an hour on a sales pitch.

I was a little confused as to how to do this myself until one of my mentors gave me this little formula:

      What + Why + How

During your tele-class to sell a product or service, you give your audience the What + Why, but NOT the How. To get they How, they have to buy your product or service.

It seems simple when put like that, but I really had a hard time until I heard that little formula. If you're doing any kind of consultative work, adhering to that formula also keeps you from giving your knowledge/services away for free. (A real danger if you're like me and LOVE IM and can talk about it all day long -- unpaid. )

Just some thoughts. I hope they help!

Set up a free autoresponder course. I've had great luck in getting new signups by giving away a free course. You can then "graduate" them over to your main list at the end.

    Ivan,

It depends on the situation. Sometimes they are on the main list. Most get the course first because I'm not one to send out a barrage of offers. For the ones that get a single mailing between one of the course installments, they don't seem to mind. Most people know that's part of the "free" model.

In other cases I invite them to go beyond the narrow scope of the course and subscribe to another less restrictive (topic-wise) list.

Sometimes I offer an incentive to subscribe to the main list.

I try lots of stuff. Lots of stuff works! People get boxed in by "do it like this" instructions and seem to forget to implement their own creativity and ideas. Right now I don't have any courses set up because I'm going to be making some fairly big changes. In a few months I'll put them back to use because frankly, it works great!

    Just like Perry Marshall said...
"Cheap and Free are your ENEMY, not your friend. Adwords is the most evolved form of advertising known to man. There is not even a close second."

Target the right demographic and audience and the right key words... and if your squeeze page is that good... it will convert with pay per click ads.

    Good luck!

You hit the nail on the head with that one.

But you need to test, test, test to make it convert well and that will cost you.

To use Adwords you better have a budget, otherwise, find another way.

      Good point

    [QUOTE=journeyforself;1516231]I am building my list,
It is growing by 20 people a day,
but I want to do better than that...QUOTE]

Hi, There are thousands of way's to market online. There are just a few that I found very interesting. I have tested many way's in I discoverd that these way's work great for me. My best day was one day when I generated 412 new subscribers with 4 different way's of marketing.

My advice to would be to use video, article, forum marketing and Pay Per View Marketing.

Always look for way's to make your squeeze page better so that you can convert your traffic into signup's.

Please let me know if this info has been helping you to build your list bigger

    Have a wonderfull day,
