What's Your Biggest IM FAIL of 2009... What NOT to do? Here's mine...

We all need to fail in order to succeed, nobody is perfect.

Here's something that happened to me recently, and I can chalk this up as my biggest FAIL of 2009.

It was the simplest of mistakes, and the lesson I've learned is to become better organized.

I FAILed to renew one of my hosting accounts on time, (I didn't know it was due to expire, I had an old email that I never check anymore as my contact info... durrrr).

An 11 year old, PR 6 website, automated cash machine, gone.

The results after I got the site back online:

PR 0, Half of the backlinks vanished. Traffic trickling.

It gets worse... The merchant account I was using for my product on that website suspends the account since my hosting was suspended.

Sales stopped dead in their tracks.

I would say I lost about half of the tens of thousands of links going to that website, since most new services/technologies have automated 'link checking' capability, and if it's a bad link, they will remove them.

It's now back to a PR 3, and the traffic/sales are slowly returning, but I've got some work ahead of me to get that site back to normal.

Don't forget to be organized and keep all of your accounts' contact info up to date! Don't get suspended! It's not fun!

Sooo.... What's Your Biggest IM FAIL of 2009?

Inquiring Warrior Minds want to know what NOT to do.

Yikes! Yeah man it can be hard to keep track of all your websites.

It sucks though...because there aren't any valuable lessons to be learned in situations like this.

    Just lost money!

I definitely need to keep better track of my domains as well.

My biggest fail has been my inaction =s I've loaded myself up with so much information that I haven't actually done much in internet marketing. I feel good though; right now I'm coming up with a plan of action for 2010!

    That's my 2010 resolution.

Getting organised with my domains, hosting, affiliates programs, etc. Knowing the clear steps of updating the flow chart as what are the TODO lists and putting everything in place.

Guess one mistake like that can be really very costly in terms of profit earning.

Anyway, that's the wakeup call so you will no longer facing the same problem again in the future.

I feel for you Jared! I really do!

Well done on actually getting it back.

Some people don't manage to do that in time.

I almost lost a valuable domain a few years ago. It was on auto renew and an old credit card I used for it had expired and similar to you, I had an old email address set up for it :-(

I did manage to get it back but it cost me $$$.

      Hi Jared,

That's awful. My sympathies, and kudos to you for sharing it.

I'm not sure, but I think that with my hostgator reseller accounts, on a paypal subscription, they just keep going as long as I pay - I think it's a rolling contract rather than a renewal based one.

So even with a duff contact email, I don't think this would have happened. If I'm right, this might be a load of your mind if you were to change.

My biggest mistake this year was developing a product and expecting it to sell without promoting the heck out of it. Approaching others to join with me in the wrong way and almost killing myself because i got so depressed with so many bills etc piling up.

Biggest success was created 2 new sites that i am proud of learning to write copy through trial and error and finally getting myself into a different headspace i started putting others ahead of myself and that is cool

My biggest fail is that I simply didn't take enough risks.

    I didn't do enough.

You got to put stuff out there first in order to have a
damn chance to fail in the first place. To do nothing is
    an even greater fail.

Not having redundant systems in place for every part of the biz. Need to have multiple merchant accounts, multiple accounts for each traffic source, etc... If anyone of them got shut down... You have a replacement in place.

I had a domain due to expire just before Halloween but ended up in hospital - it was serious, but not so serious I couldn't have called someone and asked them to renew it for me, but I didn't. I was just being lazy and feeling sorry for myself.
It was 6 years old, and I lost it - however I did, just last week, manage to convince the buyer to return it to me. (They made a nice profit on it too, lol.)

So I want to be more on top of things next year.

My biggest mistake is that I jumped from marketing method to marketing method!

I started with article marketing, made it all complicated, and then ran into a few problems. This lead me to focus on other marketing methods instead of just thinking article marketing through and persisting on it.

My advice to choose 1-2 marketing methods and stick to them. Even if you are not having any success, you must keep on tweaking it until you do!

Earlier this year when buying my very first domain name that I registered I managed to spell the name wrongly. I had the word Africa in the name and I spelt it without the "c". It was my first domain and I didn't notice the mistake to begin with this put me back at least three months as I just couldn't get the site up and running . I was completely overwhelmed with the difficulty.

Now I check and double check the spelling then check again!!!!

Hi Jared, I'm so sorry to hear about your biggest mistake of 2009. I just hope that you are now "back on track!"

My biggest mistake was trying to do too many things at once, which resulted in actually "doing nothing" ... in reallity! I would start one task, do a bit, and then get deflected onto "something more interesting??!!"

So, for me, 2010 is going to be my "Year of Total Focus!" I will do ONE thing I feel most passionate about and give it Every chance, by not being distracted by any other offers or product promotions.

    Jared,

I'm so freakin' glad you made this post, you have no idea. Why? Because it got me pissed off - at myself.

I've been very fortunate this year to generate revenues well into the 6 figure range. Some stuff of my own, some with valued partners.

But there's one project I've been saying "I'm gonna start it, I'm gonna start it"... and I still haven't done it: An online radio show for IM'ers called The Internet Daily Show.

I've had everything planned out for several months - the technical side, how to structure the shows, how to market it effectively, and most importantly how to monetize the crud out of it. But I still haven't haven't pulled the trigger.

That ends right now because of your OP here, and for that I thank you. Partly because me posting it here as made me accountable to getting it launched - which I hereby commit to doing by January 15th.

    Thanks again Jared.

    Ken

P.S. You can bet I'll be contacting you for an interview on the show.

My biggest fail was to dismiss article marketing as just something poor people do ;-)

I have started now with article marketing, using some of the War Room strategies and when I did my first experiment (event without stragies) a single article got 100 visits to a site, and that was just EZA. With the plan I have in place now I will get 1000's of targeted visitors a week in 2010 and be making nice money from it :-)

My big success was realising that my beloved first adsense site that makes $100/month as much as I am attached to it, needs to be let go of, and I need to concentrate on making real money.

I would have to say that my biggest failing point was not getting started sooner with creating my own product. My thinking was that I didn't have anything to offer because I wasn't in the true IM market. It took other people telling me that the knowledge that I do have could be valuable to others before I realized.

Now I have 10 product ideas, with one completely outlined and almost ready. So 2010 should be a much better year.

It could have been 2009, though, if I had more self-confidence in what I can bring to the table.

I think my major mistake was not being bold enough to start using any of the information I have to make money online - not even starting. I was in analyzing mode most of the year between three money-making methods, and didn't commit to any of them.

I've had some outside circumstances that took priority this year [moving due to major water damage in former home, major medical issues for my spouse], but I know in my heart I could have managed my time better to have at least 1-2 hours a day to work on something.

Next year I'll need to commit to one method and stake out some time to actually do it!

    3 really stand out.

    1. Not doing enough
    2. making impulse buying decisions and almost immediately regretting them
    3. not backing up data

On the third, I lost one of the most important folders on my hard drive "Logs" where I kept tons of spreadsheets logging almost everything (accounts, domains, cash flow, even ideas etc.)...all gone.

I downloaded every software app I could find for retrieving lost data but couldn't recover this folder or *any* of the spreadsheets inside.

So yeh, that's probably the biggest blunder. I've never backed up my data because I've never experienced any loss of data. now I have - I backup all my important stuff EVERY DAY to a back up hard drive using Cobian (opensource) for windows.

    Live and learn.

So my fail of the year is that i was ok with how it is now. And actually i think you should never stop. Doing ok ? Do it better ! Face new challenges and master them ! Get your business to a new level. Double or triple your income.

So that's my main goal for the next year - get more focused again, read through dozens of reports and great PDFs i have downloaded, get new ideas and implement them.

Wow that's alot to pay for, for not checking a few emails.

My biggest one has got to be a collection of graphics I designed. I designed over 1000 banners and buttons that could be used universally. I did all this WITHOUT bein bothered to find out whether people even needed it. I set up the whole site and the product through clickbank.

If I had been bothered to research on this I would have found out that stock image sites like fotolio offer these for pennies.

So the lesson I learned was to research something thoroughly before wasting time and money.

My biggest "fail" was the failure to NOT do what I wanted to. I became a passenger of my businesses, instead of the driver.

Plus I failed to take action on a lot of things, which all came to a head a few weeks ago.

The one thing I failed to do was delve deeper in to the Internet Marketing scene.

Due to some recent conversations with a well known marketer here on the WF, I have decided to pull the trigger on a project that I simply have always wanted to do but never did...an internet marketing e-zine that is actually useful. One that is not laden with blatant advertising and affiliate links, but one that provides valuable and useful content with each issue...and FREE.

So although I have "failed" to do so in the past, that was the past.

My biggest FAIL had to do with my hosting company and my domain registrar not communicating to fix a problem that was keeping my sites and email down. Both pointed the finger at each other and when the problem was FINALLY resolved (after about 3 days) it turns out that it was something both of them were actually responsible for.

While it's not directly a failure on my part, it did teach me not to put all my eggs in one basket (or my domains either!)

2009 saw me rush into a lot of different things...becoming an affiliate for a different product before I had even marketed the previous one. Seeing a promising WSO and then completely abandoning what I was doing previously to jump into it.

I have decided for the new year that I must make a business plan and stick to it. I have come to realize organization is key in IM, and sticking to a business plan with ONE method is key, especially to newcomers. There are too many opportunities to experience info. overload and get burnt out.

      Great thread Jared!

One major thing I'm changing in 2010 is my habit of procrastinating because I don't have time to do it ALL today. I put things off because I'm too busy when I could just as easily tackle them in smaller bites.

I may not have time to write 50 autoresponder messages today, but I certainly have time to write one or two!

I may not have time to write a pack of 20 articles, but I have time to dash off one or two - or even just outline them so they can be written quicker.

I may not have time to finish that 50 page ebook today, but I can certainly squeeze out a page or two!

My goal for the new year is to do a little bit every day, especially on those things that seem too overwhelming to do all at once. Eat the elephant one bite at a time!

My biggest failure in 2009 was not focusing on what really matters

    List building and customer relationship...

I ended up with a dead list as a result and have to start from square one
But this time I am more educated and much more aware of consequences
    of taking it lightly.

2010 will be the year when I fix my mistakes and
    reinvent my business.

I also learned that I need to focus on one project at a time.

I learned the importance of prioritizing tasks and the value
of time, I also learned to outsource tasks I am not really good at
so that I can focus on stuff that I am good at.

Its been a great ride so far, Its about to get better..

      Hi,

I feel bad admitting this, but this thread reminds me of a programme we have on TV here called 'You've been framed', where people send in home videos of people falling on their face, setting fire to themselves at parties, slipping on booze on the wedding dance floor and flying head-first into the cake etc.

You feel bad for the person at the same time as chuckling, while also feeling glad that you're not the only dumbass in town.

OK, my contribution. I recently built 50 new sites and it was only after I had submitted about 40 of their RSS feeds to multiple RSS aggregators that I realised the RSS was messed up and only showed the post title, so I had to fix it (by altering the RSS url) and then re-submit them...again.

Purchasing a couple of heavily promoted products that were
        nothing but useless crap.

My decision for 2010: I am not going to buy anything that
comes to my inbox as a recommendation from anybody!

        And I really mean it.

        Roger,

feeling glad that you're not the only dumbass in town.
That's awesome. I really want to use that as the quote under my username, but I'm a tad afraid to offend some... what do you think?

Edit: All I could fit in there was "I'm not the only dumbass."

P.S. Thanks for sharing, don't you love it when you have to do mundane, mindless, repetitive tasks TWICE?!

          Jared,

You're likely to get 'barned' for putting that under your user name...:p

I'm still waiting for someone to post they took their earnings and bought a Ferrari with the money.

My biggest mistake was trying to create my own product - several actually. Had some mild success but once I discovered Affiliate Marketing and learned how to drastically decrease the steps between me and the monies... my entire life changed.

I didn't have that type of failure, wow I'd hate to be in your shoes! One thing that can be a "failure" to most is not TAKING action. Most IM'ers just sit around and read forum through forum trying to find the magic pill.

The magic pill is your brain, now put it to good use and grab everything you've read and do something about it.

I know I've had quite a few of them, but the only one that's really standing out for me actually wasn't that bad, but it seemed bad at the moment.

I was promoting a "make money online" product and was making some nice sales. Then one weekend, the company decided to be nice to their affiliates and let the affiliates keep 100% of the commissions over the course of a weekend. I forgot that they had this set up and I received a paypal payment of $300 for the course I was promoting. I assumed that they sent the money to the wrong person, so I sent them an email to make a payment to the company and not me. I then denied the payment on paypal thinking I was doing a good deed. So not only did this person get the course, but it didn't cost them a cent because I gave them their money back.

Not too major, but it was a big deal to me when I threw $300 away...

Putting a bunch of time and energy into something that I didn't want to do long-term.

It started benignly enough. But the path began taking me somewhere I'd been before, and had made a conscious decision not to do again. Long story short, I cut my losses and bailed.

my biggest mistake was to fail to organize all my efforts and catalog thoroughly and spread myself too thin.

My goal for now on is to organize everything extremely thoroughly as in creating a turn key system.

mine is simply wasting too much time and not taking action/not trying hard enough.
The fear of not achieving my goals or doing one thing that fails when something else might have worked, stopped me.
Next year i'm more confident and I don't have that fear anymore. 2 weeks ago a lightbulb went off in my head or something. I just suddenly feel more positive about next year.
