my domain names have no www

For some reason whenever i set up a new site it is always http:// mysite . com and has no www why is this ??

I am using cpanel. The strange thing is this is happening with host9 and hostgator, i get my domain names from godaddy.

    I think it is because your domain is forwarded .I could be wrong but i think that is it

    It's nothing to do with your hosting..it's how google indexes your website..
    Using google webmasters tools? Open account if not, and from there submit your site as www.domain.com

      but i set up my hosting change my name servers, get the first page of my site up all within an hour or two and it always has no www. this is all long before google has indexed it !!

        Hi,
        Forwarded would be because godaddy is your registrar your site domains are being pointed from their server to your server that is clled forwarding directing your domain to a different server then the originating one.

        there is a simple way to see log into your domain admin and see where the extensions of yoursite.com www.yoursite.com etc are pointing. it seems like that is the problem

          Hi Sarah,

          I have a reseller ac with host nine and hostgator
          I'm not sure about this as I set all of my sites to work without www, but try adding a new domain onto your reseller and when you click -

          'create a new account'

          in the 'domain' field, add it with the www.

          I'm not sure, but I think this works.

          For wordpress sites, just go to -

          settings>general and update both these fields -

          wordpress address (URL)
          blog address (URL)

          with the www. version. It will log you out of your WP admin automatically. Then go to your blog home page and you will see it has set it as www.

            I also have a reseller account with Host Gator.
            You need to do a 301 redirect otherwise your site will be treated as 2 sites.
            This is fairly simple, here it goes:

            Locate your .htaccess file (in the public_html) directory & Add the following code:

            RewriteEngine on
            RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^([a-z.]+)?example\.com$ [NC]
            RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. [NC]
            RewriteRule .? http://www.example.com%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]

            substituting the example.com domain with your site information

                Hi

                Are you using a Wordpress blog? If so, try going into Settings, then into General (I think!) and you will see your domain name towards the top of the screen. Try changing it to include the 'www' and then save settings, that may resolve it. Worked for me!

                  It's true Wordpress allows you a MUCH easier ways to do it:

                  1. In your Wordpress dashboard go to Settings, then General, you'll see there Wordpress URL and Blog URL, just add the www to the URLs and you're good to go.

                  2. The second thing to do, although it's a bit more complicated but not at all difficult, is to register your site in Google Webmaster Tools (which is always good to do for all your sites!). After you open an account you get to "add a site". You should add both www.yoursite.com AND yoursite.com. and verify both of them. Then you go to Site Configuration then to Settings. Here they ask you for your geographic target, which is sometimes very important if your site is targeted at a certain geographic region, but they also ask you for your preferred domain, so you can tell Google if you want your domain with or without www. This is also VERY important in terms of backlinks, since you actually tell Google to consider all your backlinks as pointing at www and so your backlinks count is not divided between the two.

    I use hostgator and this has happend to me also

    I contacted hostgator and a technican had fixed the problem within 5 minutes. He also updated my wordpress installation, he said he had to tell wp about www

        And that's exactly what is meant to happen (or the vice versa where non-www switches to www). You have absolutely nothing to worry about. Your domains are set up correctly.

        Where people can go wrong is where they allow both www and non-www. Google says it has a problem with this, though I haven't ever seen evidence of it personally. I suppose they may consider it duplicate content, which is mind-numbingly brain-dead on their part.

        In my case, I also have domains switch to the non-www version. I do this in the apache config for the server (httpd.conf).

        In the config, I can specify the serverName and serverAlias. One will be the www version of the domain, the other the non-www version. I then turn on the apache mod rewrite engine and specify rewrite condition to switch to the non-www version.

        It looks like your hosting provider is doing all this for you, which is a good thing as it saves you from having to learn such arcane things. I can assure you, knowing about this stuff won't help you get girls/boys [circle preferred], make friends, or otherwise enjoy a long and healthy life

    you dont need www anymore... does anyone still type that in ?

    in the search engines http://yourite and http://www.yoursite is seen as 2 different pages, so you water down your rank if you have both

    1. You don't really need the "www" part in your URL.
    2. WWW is a subdomain of your domain:
    www.example.com
    something.example.com - they both are subdomains!
    3. G. indexes subdomains as separate sites, that's why you need to tell it to use only one.

    (P.S. There is even a movement to get rid of www - )

      Yup -

      You are ok and this is good there is no www for your domain.

      www.yourdomain.com and .yourdomain.com are two different pages to google and therefore will have 2 different pageranks. By only having the .yourdomain.com your pagerank stays at that page.

    Welcome to web 2.0. You don't have to use the "www" anymore (usually) for any site that you go to. And actually you can usually just put the domain name and the .com or .org or what not without the http://.

    To see what I am talking about just go to your address bar and put in your fav website name without the www or http:// and put the .com or what not and it will take your right there.
