I did it for one of my products. Sales increased about 13% just by upgrading my ecover to a more professional one.

No matter how good a product is, if it looks unprofessional... no one will buy it... Having a quality graphic for your ecover will have better results then a fair/poor one.

In order to get the most profit from your ebooks you must have a good cover.

I'm not saying this because I'm a designer, but just as a general comment, it does make a difference..look at the examples below, which one would you purchase from? The after looks like someone who cares about their product and keeps the site and content relevant. old graphics and outdated colors/fonts make all kinds of red flags for me.

Clients have seen an increase in sales when graphics are updated, even if it is only 1,2 or 3 extra sales a week or month, it's worth the effort, and it doesn't have to cost a lot. sometimes just an ecover update makes all the difference.

I think it makes a huge difference. The test for me is when I have people trying to order a new product form me before I have mentioned or created it just because they have seen the new cover.

People do notice because when I got my most recent covers from www.Minisitestudio.com I get asked almost every day who designed them. Now you know...

this is a great point, using the graphic/eproduct design or whatever you have developed, using it as a teaser. Most, if not all wait until every little detail is ready before getting graphic work done, great way to start a buzz perhaps?

I like to have the cover early because it helps me give the product personality and character to match.

Good ecover design will surely bring you more customers.
Make it look professional. Thus, they will trust you more
instead asking themselves questions "Am I going to get
    scammed by this website?"

I love graphics and I really hate it when it comes to
    UNprofessional website design including ecover.
When I design graphics, I'm willing to spend
couple of hours on that graphics, trying to make it
perfect and very nice to see. I will hate it when my
design is not good or out of my own standard.

Just believe me,people hate it when they comes to
a website that is full of unprofessional design.

    hi,
despite of I'm a designer myself, I must say that good graphic DOES increase your sales.
Never had a statistically-proven case, but I always put myself in a visitor's/customer's point of view. When I land on a page that looks awful/not professional (=bad graphics), I tend to leave the page immediately, even without reading the first sentence of their sales letter

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,
    Oki

Here's part of a quote from a case study that one of my clients performed...

"I’ve tested theses graphics on 10 Websites
for myself and client owned sites in diverse niches
and across the board they have
always increased our CTR (Click Through Rate) significantly.

Some sites as high as a 41% increase
after 3 weeks of testing. The average increase we
      experienced was 14%."

Wow, 41% increase, now imagine what % increase your clients could get if you could do GREAT designs,

        Thanks

        Hey Jon,

It all comes down to perception....

Will your clients perceive your site to be "professional"? This
is obviously much more important in the business arena.

But if your site looks shoddy and the graphics look weak, then
how can you expect them to think that the product is going to
        be any better?

Great graphics convey a professional attitude and a professional
        product...

        Regards

        Greg

it does make a huge difference as people look at them and they think the better it looks the better it is (not always true of course)

But, it does have a high chance of being true as it shows the author has invested money in the product whilst with cheap graphics it can show a lack of care.

Yea i guess if you have an attractive ecover to attract yr clients will work if its done professionally.you must have the killer words to attract.

The cover should be able to influence and states straight forward as about what it is all about.

Not really. There was a split test study done years ago in a report by one of the big IMers ( can't remember who, I think it was Ryan Deiss ). The results were that the graphic-less salespage converted 30% better.

I agree with James. Once you have a tangible design for your product, it gives you a huge advantage to personify the product even if its intangible. I have clients who get the designs done months ahead of their project launch. Sometimes there may be minor tweaks later, but the character remains the same.

Its all about positioning your product and designing helps it in a big way.
