Seriously, just do a search in the forum for top article directories....there are numerous threads already on this subject. My top 5, however, are:

    Ezinearticle.com
    goarticles.com
    searcharticles.net
    articlesnatch.com
    articlebase.com

Some seem to think the Alexa Rank and PR makes an article directory a top article directory but this is not the case. A few things that many never look at that they should be looking at ...

    * What does the article directory offer you as an author ??

If all an article directory offers you is the ability to post an article on their adsense filled pages then you should seriously consider before deciding this is one of your top article directories. Basically ask yourself this "What's In It For Me To Add My High Quality Content To Your Site"..

    * How much competition is already in that Article Directory ??

If the article directory is already bogged down with major competition for your same niche then is this really going to help you and should this be considered a top article directory for you. In reality the less competition the higher traffic you can get, especially if this same article directory is doing massive marketing.

    * Are my articles going to get lower click-thur rates due to adsense ads ??

You need to seriously consider this before deciding if an article directory is a top article directory for you. Some slam ads left and right and even add links in your article body. So you must ask yourself if this is going to hurt your clicks and sales any.

    * What else does the article directory offer that could save me time and money ??

It is important to combine as many sources as possible to save you money in the long run and if you can do 3 things on 1 site vs joining 3 different sites then you must consider this before deciding if any article directory would make your top list of article directories.

This is based on deciding what you think your top article directories are for you.. You should be submitting to hundreds of article directories but at the same time there are some top ones that you must decide on based on more than just alexa rank and PR .. The facts that Alexa Rank and PR means nothing should tell you something.

The entire point of this post is take your time and factor in the many many different things when you decide what are your top article directories. ArticlesBase may be great for one person but does not mean it will be for everyone...

James, you've made some good points there.

So in your opinion, how to choose the BEST article directory? any specific criteria to choose one?

I think this is something that you really need to decide for yourself.. It all depends upon what you are after ...

For example: Do you really see a need to pay one site $47 a month for this service and then a 2nd site $27 a month for that service and then a 3rd site $37 a month for another service... Or would it be beneficial to you to pay one website $20 a month that covers all the same services ...

Would you rather have an article directory that has ads slapped all over the place or would you rather have a 100% ad free article directory ??

Would you rather deal with an article directory that does nothing at all to help you succeed or one that actually advertises your articles and helps you succeed ??

See these are things that only you can asnwer and nobody can really decide this for you ...

That's a very outdated list. Try this one:
Article Directory Sites sorted by Importance as of Wednesday December 23, 2009

Of course, Alexa and PR only give clues, but if you would look all the factors you can think of - in the end you end up with a very similar list. Good directories simply have PR and traffic. Unfortunately, there is not much directories worth any attention, couple of hundred worth anything.

The Fact that PR and Alexa Ranking means nothing at all, this should not be a deciding factor in what is determined to be a top article directory. A PR6 site could get 100 visitors a day while a PR0 site could get 1,000 per day.

Not to mention just because articlesbase.com/index.php is a PR6 does not mean your article is a PR6, matter fact your article will probably be a PR0 so what good does that PR6 mean now ?? PR is a page rank and not a site rank...

Alexa has no way of tracking the real traffic of a site and as such the information is 100% incorrect.

We've all got our own opinions - and It's not really good to submit the same article 100 times across the board.

Here's a good detailed list of the major directories that I submit unique articles to and how you can use them for SEO. Hope this helps you..

Ezine (body anchor text REL=Nofollow, Resource box = DOFOLLOW)
          Articlealley (anchor text in body)
Go Articles (multiple anchor text in body or resource box)
Article Biz (Anchor in resource box)
Articles Factory (anchor text in resource box)
Articles Just 4 You (anchor text resource box)

          Good luck!

I've been doing manual submissions but I think Brad Callen has a pretty good alternative for $97 bucks.

I tried mass article control but the submit just isn't up to spec

There's a milliion submitters out there - do your research and DO NOT SPAM. With Google Caffeine less then a month around the corner, you don't want to spam right now!!

Google Caffeine is Google's update to the way it displays results. Caffeine will change the way all SERPs are displayed, and it will also re-evaluate back links to prevent spam.

Example, the value of a blog post is going to become very low in Google Caffeine, so we're going to have to find new ways to get high PR back links (I never used blog spam anyways)

In addition to performing under the hood changes, they are implementing "Live Search". Example, type in Brittany Murphy in google right now and you will see live postings happening right now a little ways down the page.

All in all it looks very similar to regular Google, but with Twitter becoming a dominating force and some spammers will be stomped (Thank God, now they are on the same playing field with the rest of us!)

There are some great article directories that do not allow auto submissions. These are the directories that many lose out on because all they want to do is auto submit.

One reason why they are better is because not allowing auto submissions means a much cleaner directory and you want your articles to be associated with a clean directy that is not full of junk.

First spend your time on good article directories by using the outline above and decide what article directories are good for "YOU".. Then after which you can spend your time on auto submissions..

Keep 3 things in mind - PR, Alexa Rank, Do Follow and No Follow mean nothing at all ...

I disagree that Do Follow and No Follow mean nothing at all... It all depends on your objective. Do Follow links will count toward SEO more so then REL=NOFOLLOW..

Generally in Ezine, a body post although its REL=Nofollow will receive about 40% more clicks then a link in the resource box (from article traffic).

But if your optimizing for SEO you need as many high quality Do Follow links as you can get.. After all back links are crucial in our industry.

Cmo, my course will explain this information to you for $1337 bucks.

                Just kidding,

Nofollow and dofollow is the way Google tracks back links. A No follow link will technically count for a lower value on Google as far as SEO goes, and a Do follow will have a good sized impact.

One way to tell is grab this tool called "SEO Tool" for firefox and it will highlight all the NOFOLLOW links.

There's been several tests in the past which tell us that Nofollow links are still liked by Google - but just not quite as much as do follow.

Example: Yahoo Answers is a REL=NOFOLLOW site, but still helps with SERPS ranking. Go figure.

Many of us have already proven No Follow and Do Follow mean nothing... A link is a link period ...Google also is by far not the only search engine online and they do not account for most people's traffic either.

These myths such as no follow and do follow is what hurts newbies.

              As you even stated yourself

Example: Yahoo Answers is a REL=NOFOLLOW site, but still helps with SERPS ranking. Go figure.
You want to know why ?? Because the no follow means nothing.. ArticlesBase.com and many other sites are no follow but they help a great deal in rankings. This has been proven many times and is not just some lame crap info passed on from one person to another..

Many of us actually test and I mean do massive testing and not just follow what someone else says...
