Three Quick Tips to Get Readers

I wanted to share a couple of things that I learned last week during a Business Writing & Grammar course. Nothing earth shattering here, but some useful tips to get your readers to read your article.

First - You NEED a headline that will make your readers read.... If it's an article - the title, if an email the subject, etc... So how do you know if your headline is good? It's measured in Emotional Marketing Value (EMV). What is that? Check out this site Advanced Marketing Institute - Headline Analyzer and it will analyze it for you. You want a score of over 75%

Second - You need White Space - What's this? Indent your paragraphs, use indented bullets, anything that creates white space. To the eye...it looks easier to read.

Third - Use of non-traditional writing, which means get to your point first, details to follow. When people read especially an article (or an email), they don't want to read all of the ooohhs and aaahhs first. They want the meat first, and if it strikes their interest, they'll continue. (Don't lose their interest in the ooohs and aaahs)

Thanks for reading!

I do agree with you. These tips are useful to catch more sales via emails. Most of the internet marketers are failing when they could not feed interesting things to their readers.

Thanks for sharing that tool (EMV checker) too.

I'm not trying to trash your post... But that headline evaluation tool isn't nearly as effective as people believe.

Case in point, here are several winning headlines written by some of the worlds best copywriters and their EMV scores...

    Gary Bencivenga's

    - 50% EMV Score

There Is Only One solution to an advertising problem: Find the man!

    - 33% EMV Score

Now Puerto Rico Offers 100% Tax Exemption to New Industry.

    - 40% EMV Score

"For people who are almost (but not quite) satisfied with their own cooking and can't figure out whats missing"

    - 21.05% EMV Score

"They Laughed When I Sat Down At the Piano But When I Started to Play"

    - 20% EMV Score

The Lazy Man's Way To Riches

Most People Are Too Busy Earning A Living To Make Any Money.

    - 50% EMV Score

"The Amazing Secret of A Marketing Genius Who Is Afraid to Fly"

    - 41.67% EMV Score

I pulled those at random. They're all winners, yet only two approached 50% and none came close to 75%.

It's not a matter of emotional words... It's a matter of understanding what gets your readers curious enough to click-through or read on..

Again, solid points for the most part. The headline is critical... I've got personal beef with the AMI tool because I've had clients say "The headline only scored 40%" and when I finally convince them to test it the ad ends up converting better than they expected...

In short, don't rely on that tool, use your head, it's a lot more powerful.

    Peace,

    -Scott

Here is one of my titles:

This score indicates that your headline has a total of 9.09% Emotional Marketing Value (EMV) Words. To put that in perspective, the English language contains approximately 20% EMV words.

I posted the link to this a few days ago. The OP is adding his own value target.

The actual EMV tool says most copywriter's headlines fall in the the 30-40% range, while the most gifted copywriters often hit the 50-75% range.

Incidentally, it is possible to be over 100%. I came up with one that rate 114% and another that rated 128.57%. I don't recall what they are now, but I wrote them down somewhere.

The headline tool is just a tool. It's very useful, but it isn't the last word. If you don't know anything about writing good headlines it's an excellent tool to help you learn. It actually measures emotional, empathetic, spiritual, and intellectual variables, not just emotional.

      All,

Thank you all much for your responses. I've been under the weather these last couple of days, and not in a position to post. A couple of points were made that I can certainly respect and understand. I do want to mention, that the tool to measure EMV is just that a tool. I would NOT rely 100% on it. The biggest tool is your experience and practice of the headlines you develop.
Time and experience will be the best factor in what get's your readers attention. Just as an example, "Three Quick Tips to Get Readers" measured at 50%, but we're all here reading this...
