Reporting internet theft/illegal downloads

Hi there,

I was offering a special deal (two downloadable info products for the price of one) products to my list and had someone dumb enough to reply saying that he wasn't interested because he had downloaded one of the products from 4shared or somewhere.

I sent an email asking him if he was telling me that he had illegally downloaded my product he replied yes, but said it was my own fault and then mocked me. He then tried to justify what he had done by claiming he was a student and didn't have the money.

The product is an ebook, videos and audio files. I normally sell it for $97

I am not concerned about the money.

I am interested about what I can do. I want to give this dude the fright of his life.

Who can I report him to?

Cheers,

Nick

    Hi Nick,
    In short nada.

You could send a dmca to the file sharing company but if it is on one it is probably on a lot more

Well, you could certainly have someone write a "legal" sounding note to him, but I'm afraid there is not much you can do about it.

In fact, I would unsubscribe him from your list.

If he used one of the tricks to search the engines and find your download link, there's definitely not much you can do about it.

If he got it from 4shared, mediafire, rapidshare, etc. that means SOMEONE ELSE on your list put it on there and he downloaded it.

You could tell these companies they are hosting copyrighted material, but even then, I'm not sure they will help much.

** I AM NOT PROMOTING THIS FORUM BELOW -- JUST A TIP **

Also, and this may sound funny, join the BHW for this reason alone: they have a member DNS -- Do Not Share -- list.

I always scour their "Downloads" section to see if any of my stuff is on there -- because I am a member(with 0 posts LOL) I can have it taken down.

You'd be surprised what they have, and it is an absolute shame.

The forum itself is protected by double-metas I think, so even if a link to your product is on their forum, it won't show in the search engines.

They are probably the biggest source for BlueFartter's who want something for nothing.

A true cesspool of a forum.

I've seen guys in here post stuff in warrior forum, then post a WSO they bought here and put it there for free. While I cannot prove their identities to be the same, the word-for-word posts kind of give it away.

I'd let it go... not worth my time... but if you want to be a REAL JACKHOLE about it - does he have a Facebook page? MySpace? Twitter? Anything like that?

Write something up to the effect that you apologise to (whoever) for making him steal your product instead of buying it; that you're sure his mother is proud, and these skills will take him far in life.

Then post it on his page and all his friends' pages.

He'll delete it off his own page, but he can't delete it from his friends' pages, and several of them will show up in his feed. Some of his friends will be shocked and offended at his behaviour, and refuse to delete it from their pages. You might cost him friends.

Also, send friend requests to a bunch of his friends. Some of them will accept, and you can make more comments about him on their page. Don't spam them, just whenever it comes up. Like when he leaves a comment on a mutual friend's page, respond to it with some mention of the time he stole that $97 product from you and how sorry you are about it.

It's hard to accuse someone of harassment because they won't stop apologising to you.

No problem -- my best advice is to just delete him from your list.

Send out a warning that you know someone else is sharing your files too, and the FBI has been contacted.

It may help -- and be sure to say you know who it is because "they" ratted them out. Say you'll let it slide this one time, but next time will be different because the FBI has given you 7 years statute of limitations to decide to press charges or not.
