My vote would go to craiglist. With many of the others mentioned - guru, odesk, etc - you're competing against the entire world. Usually with craigslist you're able to look at local needs, and you're typically 'competing' against just other local people for that particular work.

Elance and Guru.com are two tops ones. They cost money to bid on the projects. I had more success with Elance, but be prepared to bid against offshore providers at dirt cheap prices and in order to compete, she will need a dynamite portfolio of her work. Until she actually gets a bid accepted, she will have to work very cheaply to get some feedback from a project or two. I finally gave up freelancing my graphic design on Elance due to the strong advantage that offshore providers have over US providers.

Yeh, I wouldn't advise people go to rentacoder.com, it's a joke. That's probably why it wasn't mentioned Nicole.

They are blatantly upfront about favoring their buyers over their 'workers', but you can't have one without the other.

I would also put in my recommendation for Elance.com, Freelancer.com, and Guru.com.

..also, as mentioned above, be prepared to compete against almost impossible competition because of the offshore providers.

Tell her to get her work on deviantart.com too if she hasn't already. It can make for a great portfolio.

*EDIT*

Damien, perhaps there's something about Rentacoder's operation that you don't understand? I can help with that. If you spend a fair amount of time on the Internet, you'll notice that Rentacoder is highly recommended by a large number of people as well as Warriors on this forum. Success with the site greatly depends on your education about outsourcing in general, so perhaps your disgruntled position can open up a dialog.

Stating that we're blatantly upfront about favoring buyers over workers for example, is not only grossly untrue, it demonstrates your confusion about our process. We obviously could not successfully exist and favor one side. The site relies on both the coders and buyers. Right here in the Warriors For Hire section is the best place to get freelance work in my opinion.

If you provide quality you should have no trouble at all booking yourself full time from one $20 ad, and most likely be able to book yourself well in advance.

You won't have to deal with the whole bidding process or trying to compete against prices that are unworkable with your exchange rate.

You need only write a clear offer explaining what you can do and be willing to do a little free or cut price work to earn some trust in the beginning.

You'll also find that fellow Warriors are some of the best people to work with. In my experience the vast majority are courteous, respectful and grateful - not to mention reliable to pay as per agreements.

Plus, you'll learn an absolute bucketload just from interacting with other people in the industry.

The Warriors For Hire section is far and away the best place to find freelance work in my view.

Run screaming in the opposite direction from Freelancer/GetAFreelancer, unless you like paying lots of unexpected fees and competing with $1 an hour labor. That site is pure scam from start to finish, not the people on it so much, but the admin of the site are pure criminals.

There are many of those sites, I started working online by using Getafreelancer.com and scriptlance.com. Yet, there are also odesk, elance and others.

I recommend that your girlfriend be patient, particularly since there are a lot of people in these sites offering those same services for pennies (most are from third world countries where a dollar goes a long way) yet this does not ensure they offer quality services. But she should not undersell herself, if she is good, she should bid on the projects according to her experience. The first couple of projects could be a bit lower than what she thinks she is worth until she has acquired some positive feedback; she can then increase her bidding prices.

I think Rentacoder is great. Elance and Guru are awesome too. I just had better experience with Rentacoder due to their contractual process and ratings for coders.

I heard Craigslist and Philippines were good places. (I feel it is Risky) But, I like to start off with small 100 dollar projects and see how they perform.

Then, I usually move up to bigger projects and build relationships on all those sites.

I have a pretty decent team in India,Republic of Georgia and some people in the United States as well.

I usually put someone in charge and use some opensource like dot project or phpproject to manage the work.
