From pos 2 to page 3 over night

Recently just acquired page 1 pos. 2 for my keyword Christmas day, now being one day later my rating dropped to page 3, almost page 4. Is this a result of a "Google dance" or could it have been a fluke that it landed there for such a short amount of time.

Rankings constantly change based on 1000 different factors. The more you study it, the crazier you'll go. Just keep building links and aim for #1.

Exactly. Epescially with a subject like Christmas. The "Google Dance" is what is happening. Keep building links, and you will get back to page 1

You had no anchor to hold the spot .

Was it an article from a high page rank site?

Getting to Google one can be done with no real effort . Staying there takes back links and other off page seo .

    It could be QDF.

QDF is when a new page shoots to the top for a short while then sinks down, it's Google's way of keeping their index "fresh".

It doesn't happen on every keyword though, but if something is seasonal, newsworthy or otherwises current, I would place good money on it being QDF.

Thanks for the quick replies, the website itself is a blog designed to sell an affiliate product. Got pretty excited when it hit 1 for a pretty competitive keyword, guess I'll just keep plugging away with the back links,

    Build links. Be patient.

It's probably a combination of the two in my experience. You sometimes get a huge bump when adding new content(or good links) and then fall back to where you probably should be. In order to not go crazy you've got to take a longer term view and chart progress over weeks and months instead of days and hours.

Know your competition and you won't worry so much. Are they building links?

I had a page that I built a year ago that would be on either page 1 or page 2 at different times of the day for awhile. Google is crazy.
