Competition is Killing Me - All with Backlinks!

by moodykitty 13 replies
I run a BANS site started about 1 1/2 years ago. I've slowly been developing it, adding a blog with good content etc (i.e. it's not just a thin affiliate site), currently it ranks on page 3 of Google for my keyword phrase.
About 6 months ago someone else started a BANS site in direct competition with mine. Their site is on the first page, #2 site of Google. This person has NO content, blog etc. all he basically has is the auction listings and some content on the front page (so do I) and about a small paragraph on each auction page (so do I)

The thing is he's currently got about 28,000 backlinks to his site, I've only got 380 so far.

I've been working on backlinks but it takes time as we know plus I've been trying to be careful not to do it all at once so as not to look like spam.

I think my site is way better then the competition but my point is from what I'm seeing it looks like all that's needed to get on pg 1 is to get backlinks and get them as fast as you can. Forget about relevant content or age of your site because google doesn't care anymore.

Your thoughts? I need help here!

Thanks

ps. comps PR just went up to 3, mines still at 2

Are you using social bookmarking, are you creating squidoo pages, hubpages, writing articles for ezine articles.com and linking all of the content together?

Another neat trick I use is to go to Free Classifieds - USFreeads and start posting html ads everyday and hyperlink your keywords it works great with SEO.

    Hope that helps

It isn't just the backlinks, it is having the right keywords anchored with that backlink. Anchor buying keywords - you want the people going to your site to be ready to buy.

If you are working BANS, all you want them to do is click through to eBay so you can make money. Why bother wasting time putting all that content and such? Instead spend that time making MORE sites with BANS. It really is a numbers game.

Get the site up and go after backlinks instead of working on content. You can have all the content in the world but if you don't rank you aren't going to make money.

Sorry to hear of your woes. I have not gotten enough backlinks on some of my sites, and it is discouraging to see a new site pass you up. You just have to keep up on the linking each month or have it done.

See what he is doing and do that, unless it is black hat. Get links, write articles, get bookmarks.

Have you seen Big Mikes offer of socialbot? That would help you quite a bit.

    Thanks everybody.

I'm doing squidoo, submitting articles, social bookmarking, directories, usfreeads, posting to blogs -all while trying not to spam of course.
    I've started using socialbot too.
I don't know if he's using blackhat. I know this guy from the bans forum and from his squidoo pages - he's created a lot of squidoo sites on the same subject which to me he's spamming squidoo. Having said that, this guy knows his seo. I know some too but he's good and has more time than I do I think (I've been keeping an eye on him ).
I do know he's paid for links in directories and such which I thought google frowned upon, am I incorrect?

I'll admit I slacked at first on this site, so I am behind. Nothing like a little competition to get you moving.

Rhonda, I appreciate your imput but creating a ton of bans sites is not the way to go. In case you missed it, ebay banned a bunch of affiliates recently for not having quality sites so I'm not going to do this. Besides, there's already way too many thin bans sites out there, I don't want to get into trouble with that. In fact, ebay did close my affil. acct but reinstated it.

They're against paid links from other sites (content, merchant, etc), but paid directories are fine. The best example is the Yahoo! Directory - $299/year, and the best link you can buy.

The important thing to do with paid directories is just ensure that the page you'll be listed on is actually in the Google index, and has a current (within the past month) cache date. Links can't pass link reputation or pagerank unless they're in the index.

Moodkitty, you really might want to go read what Vic has to say over at Bloggerunleashed.com -- because he is making a killing from BANS.

I don't work BANS myself but I am friends with many of the regulars at that site and they are making good money building in bulk.

But it is your choice on how you want to work things.

    Rhonda,

I hear what you're saying I'm just choosing not to risk it. I do appreciate your opinion though.

A thin affiliate is a hard term to define. Does that person have about 200 words or more per page! This game is yes about content but backlinks and anchor text is huge! If the site can do all that then it will probably stick. The webmaster can always go back and add some content as needed and do a few SEO tweaks. This is how I go after a week competitor ... not with on page content but with backlinks articles and anchortext targeted after their main keywords they are targeting than I go back and add content to my pages ... oh yeah already said that. I never pay for links.

I dumped BANS and went with a product that I could use with wordpress have not looked back.

Thank you all for your opinions, it is very helpful. Guess I will be working on building backlinks first and go from there.

If anyone else has suggestions please post

I also use RSS Gadgets from Big Mike on a few of my WP sites but it is limited. i.e. can't choose categories or search title and description.

What are script are you using?

phpbay pro. You can choose categories search just tittle or all. I just love it. Configurable by zip or country and once the plugin is installed it is easy to configure. In really tight niches I needed some of the abilities that script provided that one other I was using could not provide.

Support has been good too! There is also a standalone php version that works in non WP sites.

Links to your site are really important. No question about that. But if you've been unable to get any higher in Google than page 3, I suspect other organic SEO issues are the problem. I created a new site (www.garmin430.com) and got it on the first page of Google within a few days. No backlinks at all.

Now I can't be sure how long it will stay there without backlinks, but it is possible to get high rankings in Google for keyword phrases simply by following the SEO basics.
