Adswaps - good idea or bad?

I am just getting into the IM niche and building my list, and I've been approached by someone asking if I want to do an adswap.

Is it a good idea or bad?

The advantage:
I will build my list faster that way.

The disadvantage:
I send very good and useful emails to my subscribers, and I don't want to ruin my list by sending them to sites of people I don't know.

So should I do it or not?

    Hi Sarah,

I won't touch what you said about being above.

As for list swapping I know many will disagree with MO however When you spend time building relationship with your list where they learn and expect things from you in a certain way I.E. no junk .I am not sure that swapping would be a good idea I would not ever do it just the way I am many will say it is a great idea. I think it is a potential bomb so I never do it. My own name is what i am concerned with when considering my readers. If they trust you they may just act and if they act and it is poop they will be upset probably unsubscribe and remember you for that.

    Just MO

If the person you are doing adswap with has a bigger list and (most importantly) is providing good content to his/her list, I think it's fine to do adswap.

In some adswaps, there are some people to send to your ad to their grade "B" list. ie. (Not so responsive list) and they get responsive guys from your list to their grade "A" list.

    So be careful.

To make it like an equation:

Your good list, their bad list = You lose, they win
Your bad list, their bad list = Both lose
Your good list, their good list = Both win

I unsubscribe from every list that does ad swaps. If they do it once a month I don't have a problem with that, but anything less than that and I unsubscribe. I am not saying ad swaps are good or bad, but since I know what they are doing I unsubscribe. Maybe someone that really doesn't know they are being used to build a list may like the idea of getting free information and may stay on a list forever. Just depends on the type of people you have on your list I guess Sara.

Get to know the other marketer first, and I think adswaps can be highly lucrative and an excellent idea.

I think part of the key is to find niches that compliment each other as opposed to highly competing with each other.

I too am sceptical about ad swaps, although I would consider doing it with someone I know very well and trust.

Some people do adswaps every day (possibly multiple times a day)... I am sure it is very lucrative for them, but it is a path that I would rather not take.

        Different folks... different strokes.
