Hey,

I find that twitter is not the best source of traffic right now. I am only converting about 1% of my followers into traffic. With only 3000+ people following me that's not too much traffic.

I don't spam. I tweet about 5-10 times per week and half of those tweets are informing people about a new blog post. The other half of my tweets are links to resources or tips.

I hear all these people saying that twitter is a great traffic resource. Am I missing something?

Thanks

Brandon

    Brandon,

Twitter traffic is fickle at times but it does work. Try a couple of more things:

Tweet 3 -4 times per day.
    RT 3 - 4 times per day.
Always say thank you to RT's.
    Give tips instead of links.
    Compliment other twitterers.
    Search and reply.

3000 of anything is nothing if it's not targeted! I always laugh when I hear people having thousands of followers. 1000 specific targeted followers is much better than ten thousand of everyone else. Keep at it it works!!

And outsource as much as possible!!! Hope that helps .....

Yeah Johnathan makes sense. Just to be clear I am not promoting stuff, I am usually giving them links to great websites, tools and fantastic blog posts from other blogs.

I am wondering that perhaps the very sign of a link makes some people assume its an affiliate link or a link to an opt-in page.

I think it's about giving value like Garry, Mike and james said, help people solve their problems and they will respect and convertinto traffic in turn. But a lot of people are putting links forward which I am finding extremely annoying, it's just nothing less than spamming.

"You need to make sure your Twitter followers are targeted followers. They must be interested in what you're Twittering or they won't click. Don't spam. Give useful information and helpful tips. Show your followers you are interested in their success. Use Twitter to build relationships. and that will build your business. It might take a bit more time, but it will pay off. Also, you need to do more tweets per day. Go to socialoomph.com and you can schedule your tweets for a specific time in the future. DM me for an article on how to use Twitter to make money."

          Quoted for truth.

Build meaningful relationships with people. Become a real world acquaintance or friend. Go to an offline meetup with some people. People are more likely to buy from and trust people they actually know or are friends with. Do not go for the hard sell and never spam social sites that is not the goal of using social sites.

These relationships will take months to build. Business is about relationships with other people you actually know.

Great video on Twitter. I am Twitter-ignorant. I have been of the frame of mind that it is 1/2 bots as well, and have never really thought about using it seriously. As the video shows, if you do have actual people following you, and you are interacting with them, it seems to work just like a list. Thanks!

I also find that a lot of people are just following each other for the sake of getting a big group of followers. The problem with this is you basically have a big non-responsive list.

If your followers are people you have a relationship with - they will buy. I KNOW this.

Agreed. I had a website owner request my writing services when I first started my niche-writing twitter list, and it had fewer than 50 followers -- but hand picked and HIGHLY niche-targeted.

I think the mega-followers tactic works if you're Guy Kawasaki or Seth Godin, but I like small, cozy lists.

You can test it out by setting up a different account for your small list, and see which one performs best for you. (Get an alternate email address at gmail or some other free site.)

I think of Twitter as a kind of playground...it's still too new and changing too fast for there to be any hard and fast rules.

Twitter is my second source of traffic and works very well.

Heres the thing about twitter that i have realized after tweaking and modifying my strategies on Twitter.

There are tons of buyers on twitter but 1 thing alot of people are missing is that they just add anyone and their uncles.

Be more precise on who you follow.

Target the people in your niche.

For instance if you are in a niche for affiliate marketing and you target affiliate marketers read what their followers say.

Don't just add them because their your targets followers.

Make sure that their interest is in affiliate marketing.

Keep your followers for precise. Treat it like you would a list.

      Heres another thing.

i would say 80% of people do not buy or sign up for anything right away.

Twitter is much like a traffic exchange and people do alot of bookmarking.

Just because you didn't make a sale on twitter today doesn't mean you didn't get a bunch of people bookmarking your site link.

Give it some time and you will see results.

      Like anything, be consistent.

If you don't see any results around 45 days then try a different twitter strategy.

      Hope this helps
      Craig

Too true looked though a few pages of the tens of people following me know one person all the rest seem to be bots or people who follow thousands of people (who im pretty cetain are bots), and if thats all youve got to talk to then no it wont work and to an earlier point id prefer 10 real people than a billion bots Twitter seems pretty useless compared to a tool like facebook

WOw great post MikeGriffith, I have been struggling with twitter for quite sometime. If you think about it, using social media to promote your business or website can be exhausting. Posting Facebook msgs daily, twitter 3-4 a day. But I am sure these are just the small kernels one needs to perform in order to generate traffic to there website.

Building relationships is what I have been doing. I guess its hard sometimes because you don't always see results right away.

I believe this is why it takes time to build a business both online and offline. You cannot force relationship and they quite often take time to build trust.

Twitter still works! But you've to come out form the standerd twitter traffic driving methods. (It doesn't mean something unethical)

    You've to develop own techniques.........

Last day, I got 83 "REAL" traffic from twitter within 30-35 minutes with "0" followers.

    It's nothing more than PLANING.

    Brandon,
yes 3000 is not much to get constant traffic that you can use.
Why not use free software to target and follow those in your niche?
Each day you could open a new account and follow 1000 people and about half will follow you back once you reach 2000 followers you can just autopost content.
Then after a few months you would have 60 accounts with 2000 each in them and you could then direct them to anything you like.
Like i said you can take care of all this with free software, and services.
Each follower will get your welcome DM thats over a hundred thousand messages sent right there.
Its much easier to get 60 accounts up to 2000 then it is to get 1 account up to 120,000.
But either way you have to have value and be a good twitterer, or its all in vain.

You can follow a thousand in about 5 minutes so its not much work the software does it all. The hard part is content that is targeted, which you are already doing.

you should be tweeting about 4-5 times a day with promo tweets and then another 4-5 a day with personal ones so that you are communicating with your followers to get the trust levels moving. Its not just about gaining followers but about building relationships.

If you follow this your rates will increase by a lot

I do believe in twitter traffic and this has to be done in such a way that it should not go to spam as, it is important to put as many tweets so that to let others to follow you.

The traffic that comes from twitter is always good just requires little concentration on what exactly your are tweeting.

      Thanks

The key with Twitter is making sure that you have targeted followers. Position yourself as the expert, make special offers and they will appreciate it and buy from you. It's all about relationship building. You need to offer them something of value first to initiate the communication. Once you build up a strong targeted following, there is so much you can do with that to monetize it in other ways.

    • Here are some things you should keep in mind about Twitter and how you use it to gain followers and grow your business:

      * Quality of followers is better than quantity

      * Targeted followers is better than random followers (specific not general)

      * Real followers are better than random followers (human not bots)

      * Offline business? Followers in the same location is better (local not global)

      * Two-way communication is better than one-way (interact, don't spam)

Just go out and talk to them, reply to them, retweet them, and show that you care about them and their interests and then see your following and business grow.

First, I would like to thank James for the great video on Twitter. However, here's my 2 cents on this issue. Twitter is beginning to reach its limit on its original usefulness. When I first joined on Dec 7, 2006 - Twitter really has quality users, tweets, and micro focused targeted followers. But, now it has become almost fully link baited posts trying to sell products and services beyond its original usefulness. Maybe I'm wrong - but, I don't enjoy Twitter as much as I did in 2007 and 2008.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[1780574].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author Rupps
So far I'm not really buying that many people are getting good traffic from it. James has a huge following so I will believe him as well as anyone else with those numbers. Also well known marketers are obviously drawing traffic too.

If you do the math, the shear volume of that many followers will bring you traffic.

Also if you have a highly targeted niche then your conversions should also likely be higher. But if you are in the Internet marketing niche as many here are, then your target audience is mostly just tweeting for themselves and are not even online as they use auto posters so your tweets are not even seen.

I'm not giving up on it, just can't figure out how to make it work for me. It seems way too time consuming and I don't want to outsource it unless it was profitable for me to do so.
