I need a motivational kick in the butt

Okay....I'm in need of some major motivation. I guess our money situation in our family has gotten us in some kind of depressed feel. My husband and I both don't want to do anything. It's like our bodies are going through the normal daily routines like work, sleep, eat, etc. This has been going on since the week before Christmas and I need to shake it off but I just seem to not be able to do that.

Anybody ever see that movie "Click" with Adam Sandler? Remember when he fast forwards through his life and they show his body in this dull state, while life goes on around him. That's how I feel. It's like an outer body experience for me......I know what I need to do to get going in IM/AM but I just can't seem to make my body move in that direction. I've been reading some of the postings on this forum and other forums to see if that will help me boost my motivation.......I just need someone to help me get motivated.

So.....with 2010 beginning tomorrow, I need you guys to give me some words of wisdom, encouragement, motivation, or just a good swift virtual kick in the butt. Anyone?

Hmmm... I can only tell you what's worked for me. I needed some help this week too.

First, find a book that will get you inspired. My favorite? "Rhinoceros Success" by Scott Alexander.

Second, take an objective look at this. I think you'll find that all roads of getting motivated are going to lead to "take some action toward my goals." So save yourself a lot of time and take one step in the right direction. Do that a couple of times and you'll start to get some momentum and the rest will take care of itself.

I find that in order to manage the peaks and valleys of seasonal productivity, it helps to divide up all the tasks that need doing into ones that need thinking and motivation, and ones that are just mindless busy work. Save the mindless busy work for when you're feeling down and unmotivated. For example, if you have a few niche blogs set up, spend some idle time looking up free articles from directories that you can queue up for release over the coming months. Make comments on articles related to ones on your own blog and link back. Even idle internet "goofing off" can be productive because when it comes right down to it, IM is about 2 and only 2 things. Building pages, and building links. You can do both with your hands tied behind your back.

Note: If you don't have a niche blog you can do this for, just start one. Blogger is free, find free articles, pick an affiliate product or just put AdSense or Amazon on there. Easy, fast, brainless.

I find it's not really possible to motivate oneself out of a funk. You just have to set up little tricks like this so that you can actually be productive without using your brain.

    Hope that helps!

Fair warning: It's possible I'm arguing with you because I have nothing better to do.

My suggestion... get involved with some volunteer work of some type. Soup kitchen, food pantry, second hand store...even public schools need volunteers.

One reward is a break in your routine. Not to mention meeting new people while making a bit of difference for good in the lives of others...

Another benefit with volunteering is you take the focus off of yourselves, this often helps put things in a little better perspective.

I know it sounds like a silly question, but what is your diet like?

    Do you exercise?

And mentally, do you have exciting goals set for yourself and your
    family?

These simple things (especially diet) can really mess up the chemicals
in our brains if not approached intelligently and routinely.

Susanna, if you want to break free of that rut you are going to have to make yourself do something today no matter how small toward the direction of your goal. Just sit down and perform some simple act. Tomorrow do it again the next day and so on adding a little each day. Procrastination is a psychological state and it creates depression and depression creates procrastination and so on it goes. To break the cycle you have to build momentum and keep it going. Start small don't let yourself get overwhelmed or you fall right back in the rut. Do a little today and reward yourself and come back to it tomorrow. Don't try to do a lot today just take the first step. It isn't going to happen overnight build the momentum.

    Hey Susanna

I find the best motivation from building small under the radar niche websites that make me more money month after month.

Do a little bit every day and eventually you will have many websites up and running and the money will come.

Focus on one thing at a time, set yourself 1 hour and then take a break. Then do another hour then break. Make sure you have a reward system and a set of goals.

So think about this, if I upload a new site during the next hour, then I get to eat a chocolate bar. Then if I write 1 article for my site then I get to take a bath. Small stuff like this and it gets you to the finish without thinking about all the negative stuff. Just focus on the next treat.

  • small steps to your goal is the key, as has been stated above. It sounds like seasonal depression to me, I get that every year and have routines and triggers set up to keep me motivated. This winter for example I have set up three new youtube channels and done the marketing for one so far. New projects can get you excited or revisit the old ones and give them a makeover / change and test something

Napolean is famous for inventing this tactic.

He once landed with a force of troops, and upon doing so sank the transport vessels that had carried them.

His troops now had 2 choices-Fight and die, or Fight and win. They could only return home if they were victorious in there conquest.

Take your money, and put it in a CDR or a safety deposit box you cannot access for say.. 6 months. Keep enough of your savings and monthly income available to pay your bills for 3 months.

You wont need "Motivation" then. You'll be fighting for your financial survival.

Extreme, maybe. But I guarantee you it will work.

      Not everyone works that way.

When I was facing severe financial hardship, all I could do was hide. The worse things got, the more withdrawn I became. I finally got to the point where I wouldn't work at all and ended up homeless.

The only thing that kicked me in the butt was changing my perspective. I don't even know for sure how or when it happened. It was a culmination of a lot of things I saw or read in movies, books, television shows, etc. I finally realized I was smarter and stronger than I thought, and I pulled out of it.

But utter financial ruin wasn't enough to motivate me. It just made things worse.

        1. Get a piece of paper.

Get up, stop reading this, and get a piece of paper and come back.

        2. Get a pen.

Get up, stop reading this, get your pen.

        3. Now, you'd better have an actual pen and paper, or crayon or something to write with and something to write on. You will need it, because you are going to be instructed to turn off the computer. But wait, don't turn it off yet.

Write these questions on the paper, and when you have written them down, you need to turn off the computer and go write the answers.

        Here are the questions:

        1. What interests do I have? If the internet did not exist, what kind of store or business would I want? What would I sell? How would I get it? How would I deliver it?

        2. Where would you like to envision you and your husband being in 10 years from now? Describe your home, describe your car, describe your neighborhood, and describe every last detail you can. What does the perfect "normal" day entail?

        3. Did you write it all down? Good. Now turn off the computer, and go write it out, as much as possible. Turn it off, and don't come back until you have answered those questions as best you can. Don't think about money, or anything else. Just write down what you want, and then come back.

        Now GO!
