Are You Sure Your Review Site Is Giving Honest Reviews

I subscribe to a newsletter from Mike Young an Internet Lawyer. He is pretty darn helpful with tips, case studies and newsworthy items, concerning doing business legally on the internet.

Today's newsletter pointed out a $300,000 settlement to the state of New York for a site publishing false and misleading testimonials, by implying the testimonials were real and satisfied customers.

You can read about it here:

Boys and girls you might want to take a look at your own Review sites to make sure you are being above board with your own customer testimonials.

Other thoughts appreciated.

    Hi Ken,

So, is "reputation management" going to be the catch phrase of 2010? Or, will it be "was also found to be in violation of FTC rules"?

Seriously though, I'm glad they got caught and fined steeply. It's about time.

If you have to resort to fake testimonials you are doing it all wrong. Here's a thought: publish some of those less-than-favorable reviews, too. Then show what you did to make it right.

    All the best,

I think one interesting point that should be noted is that it's not only the FTC, which can come after you but the state as well.

The fact is if we keep our business above board we don't have to worry.

Now I really have to get back to work.

    Right on, Ken!

Staying above board and playing fair is the only way to go.

Maybe, just maybe, 2010 will be the year the online hucksters get the message. A guy can dream, can't he?

Reminds me on a cheap software product I've seen once at clickbank, which produced fake testimonials with just a few clicks.
