This is not me... but I found it on youtube and it is a phenomenal technique if you use aweber!

Aweber is a list building program that will broadcast your list to all of your subscribers. But also their is a hidden technique that will shock you and increase you revenue by 30% even if you have a very small list. What if you could break down your list and send out to only your unopened subscribers. Watch the video & learn how.

I'll give you what I know about this, this is current as of November last year.

Things may have changed, but I wasn't aware this was even part of the
default Aweber system irrelevent of when you joined .

EDIT: Ok, yep, just logged into one of our new accounts and I can
            see it'a standard function.

When I enquired about this back in November last year I was told it was
part of the "Email Marketing and Analystics" program.

Which would give us the following:

            * Track who opens your messages and who doesn't.
            * Track who clicks your links and who doesn't.
            * See sales revenue generated by subscribers.
            * Track website clicks using your own domain name, without ugly
            click tracking links.
            * Segment and follow up with subscribers based on their click, open,
            and sales activity.
            * Split test messages and forms to see what works and what doesn't.
            * See which ad campaigns or signup forms bring you the most
            subscribers
            * Follow your list growth over time

            I was given this pricing:

Pricing is based on the number of subscribers stored within
your account. The structure is as follows:

            > > 0 - 500 $19
            > > 501 - 2,500 $29
            > > 2,501 - 5,000 $49
            > > 5,001 - 10,000 $69
            > > 10,001 - 25,000 $149
            > > 25,001+ Contact us for a quote

Any broadcasts sent prior to upgrading would not be included in
            this functionality.

I was also told if you upgrade, you can't ever downgrade again.

Now I was still prepared to go with this until I found out this one
major issue (for us anyway), may not be a hurdle for others
            depending on you model.

For you to segment those who didn't respond and re-send you can
only do it to one list at a time.

So if you're like us and have say 20 lists in Aweber, but send the
same broadcast to all of them using the include lists option, Aweber
can't correlate that data from the lists together and then segment
those who didn't open it .

It can only segregate the non opens from the primary list you send
            it from.

Which unfortunately for us made it about as much use as a chocolate
            tea pot.

Ryan Deis and Belcher taught this exact technique a year or so ago,
it's solid if your list building model supports it, unfortunately we
generate a lot of sub lists within a niche and it's useless for us.

Email Segmentation: 5 Groups You Can Easily Target, Part 1

        In the comments Justin says:

        Hi Jez,
In order to use these search terms, you need to be using our Email Web Analytics tools.
If you signed up with AWeber prior to when we released these tools, you'll need to upgrade in order to use them.

So, apparently us old timers need to upgrade our accounts and start paying the higher $ :-(

The more that I look into email marketing the more I'm thinking about just swapping out to InfusionSoft.

Just a wee extra $3000.00 per year (cheapest) to access it.

Looks like they changed the pricing model from one based on subscribers
          to a blanket fee.

Means on just one account alone we would go from paying about $70 per month
to $265.00 under the blanket pricing structure. That would mean about $15k
extra per annum in fees for our accounts.

EDIT , ignore the above the $3000.00 extra per year is based on
the number of subscribers in our account, will be a lot cheaper for
          some.

Would still probably be worth it if it worked for our model.

That said, here's something people do need to be aware of.

Just because somebody didn't open your e-mail, doesn't mean they didn't see it.

Perry suggested that you do this constantly but didn't really factor in the
          unsubscribes from it.

Just because they didn't open it the first time around , doesn't mean they want
          their inbox filled again.

          Just worth noting.

          P.S

I don't really get their "upgrade" pricing it's an utter rip off compared to pricing
on new accounts with the functionality inbuilt.

    Thanks for sharing.

As others have said - its a known technique (obviously not a well known one) But folks have been segmenting lists for ages.

The only thing to be careful is this - doesn't matter what technology service providers use - you can not trust their 'not opened' statistics. There may be studies that indicated what % you can estimate really did not open - I don't know of any - but that number reported by iContact, aWeber, brontomail I know is not accurate, and I can reasonably assume those from other service providers are not accurate either. Its just the nature of MTAs (Mail Transport Agents- programs like sendmail, qmail, exchange, domino, etc).

But no matter - still a good technique to use and test.

    best,

I wish you could send a different autoresponder message if they didn't open. It's great that you can do this with broadcast messages, but I think it would be great if you could automatically send out the same autoresponder message with a different subject line if they didn't open after a day. Just food for thought.

I really don't get this pricing upgrade structure.

Basing it on one of our accounts with 23,000 subscribers.

    According to this page:
Affordable Email Marketing - Price Your AWeber Account

If we purchased a new account now and had 23,00 subscribers, it
    would cost us $19+$130 = $149

We currently pay just $ 49.80 under the old scheme.

So they are charging $90 extra per month to new subscribers for a
service, a service they may presumably not actually want,
seems it would have been better as an optional service.

So not great for the consumer, good for Aweber of course.

Now looking at it from an upgrade prospective.

Current pricing for new members to manage a 23k list = $149

Upgrade monthly price for members with 23k list = $265

How on gods earth do they justify charging existing customers an
extra $110 per month for the same exact service ?

Before I put this to them in an e-mail today am I being dim
here and making a severe miscalculation ?

This is what I see on the upgrade page for our 23k account:

New Email Marketing & Analytics (upgrading replaces your current package):
    Pkg Name Term / Price*

    Email Marketing & Analytics 1 month(s) recurring - $264.00
    3 month(s) recurring - $784.00 - Save $8.00!
    12 month(s) recurring - $3133.80 - Save $34.20!

Wowza, so you can add as many people as you want to your list

I had no idea they even had such a plan, amazed they didn't screw

I stand corrected, I just haven't quite hit my ceiling for contacts yet (10,000) I've definitely got over 500 subscribers and my bill has never moved above 19.99/mo though.

          http://web.archive.org/web/200412301...aq.htm#pricing
(10,000 leads for 19.95. Each additional 10K for 9.95 more)

My big hang up is the single opt-in. I love that. I wish aweber never stopped offering it...

I got warned one time when my spam complaint went to .02% that I would have to switch to double opt-in and upgrade my account.. but it hasn't happened since so I'm still on the old old old system.

I've been with them for quite a few years, but didn't really start building my lists until 2008.

If you have a list that only has an open rate of 20%, you need to figure out why. Mailing them again can certainly help but I have my doubts about a 30% increase on open rate.

And in this example the guy was giving away something and said so in the subject line. And he only got 300 out of 1400 to open? That says volumes about the quality of the list.

When you can't get your list to open a free offer, I'd say you should spend your time building a better list than beating a dead horse. Nobody gets 100% open but 20% for a free offer is pretty low.

What kind of open rates /CTR do you get on your mailing lists? And how do you get and keep it so high?

I have another question about this technique too...

No email tracking service is perfectly accurate, since there's no real way to track every single email that gets opened. So what about those people on your list who did open it, read it and maybe clicked the link but didn't get tracked (because they block images or use text email)

They'll get the same email twice, do you just not worry about it because they're the minority?

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but Aweber's open rate and click-through tracking is flawed. This developer did some testing on own to confirm it and instead of actually reporting the unique hits, they count repeat opens and repeat clicks.

Repeat opens and clicks are not bad, it means someone either went back to read the email again or they forwarded it to someone. I believe these should be tracked independently such as "total opens" vs "total unique opens" "multiple opens" or whatever.

As far as the technique in the video, it appears (correct me if I'm wrong) is to re-mail people who have not been tracked as opening it. I want to say this is risky because people may have opened the email but didn't allow their email client to fetch the images. This will cause the people re-read the email and be tempted to report you as spam or unsubscribe.

I think further qualification and segmentation should be done BEFORE email people again. Simply using the "opens" as the only means of qualification is not enough. You will incur more spam complaints and increase unsubscribes.

Oh, and Infusionsoft can do this, too. ;-)

I Have been doing this for several months already - with very similar (excellent!) results.
The process is also easier now with the (relatively) new aWeber interface.
