Good accounting software for IM?

Hi everyone,

With the beginning of the new year, I figure it is time to get my records in better order for this year.

So, i'm looking for a recommendation of a good accounting software (expenses, revenue, etc.) that folks use with internet marketing.

Thanks very much,
Tom

  • Hire a book keepers. It's very cheap and worth it. Then just give them your expense reports. Unless you are selling your own products, most accounting software is overkill.

You only need to track profits and expenses. Your Balance sheet will hardly change.

And I'm not talking full time. You buy and hour or two a quarter. Costs me less than $100.

Totally agree - outsource it! I did this 6 months ago, and my productivity has soared. Accounts is not my thing (neither is graphic design) so I pay someone to do these things for me.

When you stop trying to do everything yourself, it is amazing how well you can focus on the tasks that you (a) make the most money from and (b) enjoy.

    Hi,

There's a warrior here recently who's into accounting.

He showed a video on how to use quickbooks and
how to apply it to the Internet marketing business..

I tried to locate the thread but couldn't find it

    All the best,

    Tom,

I worked 5 years in accounting before getting into internet marketing. I recommend Quickbooks or Peachtree. I recently launched a video where I teamed up with a top internet marketer teaching a quick system I use and recommend for all IMers. It also teaches you how to import paypal activity into QB. Click on my signature to find out more.

    Good Luck!

Outright.com (just saw the link was already given by BlueSquares) - great service, very simple and if you use PayPal, it automatically downloads everything (revenue & expenses) and will even do a simple tax calculation for the business on a quarterly basis.

I try to keep things simple and this definitely helps.

Right now, I just use Microsoft Excel. If you don't have a very complicated business model, you probably don't need a fancy account software package.

If your business model is fairly simple, and you aren't pushing a ton of volume, you're right, a simple spreadsheet should do the trick. Now, if you have revenue coming in from many different sources and money going out to many different vendors, you may want to invest in something that is going to help organize this better.

I know many IMers use paypal, and paypal has a great income statement tool that will give you simple reporting on your paypal activity. Where it could get complicated is when you add clickbank or something else similar, then you are going to several different locations to get the reports you need, where you could have it all in one central location. Simplifying and organization is key. If your business is cluttered, your mind is cluttered as well.

        Just my 2 cents.

If no one mentioned it, there is a free version of Quickbooks available. It doesn't have all the features of the full version (obviously), but it has enough to get you through the basics and you can always upgrade later if you like.

Good call Ben Roy. I recommend that as well. That way you didn't invest $200 on a software you don't need. I use a Mac and I was able to download a free full trial for 30 days before upgrading.

I know we are being repetative, but I use quickbooks contractor pro. It's kind of expensive, but it is very good.

As a side advantage, I have some clients who found out about it and literally beg me to do their books, usually on a weekly basis. I would rather not leave the house, but they are good clients (plus one of them paid for my 09 version of quickbooks), so it's kind of like a boring but profitable side job. I even ended up hiring a secretary to come in with me and file the stuff I enter. (kind of embarassing, but like I said they are really good local clients and what the heck).
