20 years from today... Shall you KICK yourself in the "you know what" ?

Hi...

OK... I have few free moments this morning...
and I thought about opening this for discussion...

Are we missing something?

I mean... is there is anything that you (and I) can take advantage of NOW
to avoid blaming ourselves (or/and be blamed by our family members) 20 years from today?

Or it is impossible to tell?! :confused:

Few days ago, I was asked:
What was the FIRST domain name ever registered?

Now... this is not an easy question...
I made some research and found a lot of claims & little agreement...

Anyway... I discovered that the oldest officially registered domain names (as per Whois) were:
nordu.net >> created in 01/01/1985
symbolics.com >> created in 15/03/1985

umm, I don't know the owners of these domain names...
BUT, I wonder if they are blaming themselves?
(because honestly, I would be kicking myself with a hummer if i were them!)

Why?
These guys could pick *any* domain name in the world and
they chose Nordu.net?!

No matter how the name is catchy and speaking for their purposes...
and regardless of how it sounds in Scandinavian languages...

They picked: Nordu.net

They had each and every word in the dictionary available...
and they picked a word that is not even an English word!

Did they "miss" something? Hell ya!
(personally judged of course)...

Which brings us back to my question...
Are WE (currently) blindly missing an opportunity that will regret it in few years later?!

I know it's a hard question as well... because "normal" people won't like to miss something if they were aware that its a "real" opportunity...

Anyway... Just an idea that came across my mind, and thought to put it up here for anyone to add (or rant?

) about.

Actually it's not only this domain... there are tens of amazing domains
which now worth millions (even without contents).

It's like being the first person to go to "Kuwait", before everybody else discovers the oil
The only problem: Would you think that Oil is THAT important if you was the first to now about?

  Well, not necessarily related to domain names but definitely IM in general - TAKING ACTION.
  
  If I had started taking action and testing and trying a few more things several years ago, I might be farther ahead than I am now! :-) But at least 20 years from now I'll be thanking my lucky stars that I worked so hard to get where I wanted to be.
  
  Anyone sitting there waiting until they have this whole ball of wax figured out before they create their masterpiece that will pull in $20k a day - get started now. Don't worry about whether it's a masterpiece. Start learning by doing and you will get it figured out a whole heck of a lot sooner!

Go and register all the .NET and .INFO domains NOW!!!
There are more good net' s and info's than com's wich means after 20 years when it will be impossible to get any good domains, you will have some that are worth millions...

Just a thought...

One of my favorite quotes.

Most or the early domains were registered by companies (symbolics) and others, especially research institutes - and I have no idea who nordu could be.

These companies also got first dibs on huge blocks of IP addresses - folks like IBM, Xerox, Nortel etc. At Nortel they used a routable class A for their internal network, since they had the IPs to spare, instead of the more appropriate 10.X.X.X network.

But in all their favor - who knew in the mid 80's what the Internet would become?

And yea, I kick myself every time I visit linux.com, since I originally registered it way back in the mid '90s and let it lapsed. I didn't want to spend the $100 bucks to re-registered it when it came due.

I need a drink.....

This is something that my boss is always banging his head saying: "I had the internet back then - oh why didn't I bought domain names like ibm.com, usa.com ..." - LOL

I was too young back then but it still brings a smile to my face

  Firstly... Ibm.com is one of the first/oldest domains as well...
  (registered on 19-Mar-1986).
  
  Second... it's not about being there first! (we are HERE now)...
  it's about having a vision of what is GOING TO BECOME hot in the coming 5/10/15/20 years... this i hard!
  
  Who would think (in the 80's or even early 90's) that MP3 would be THAT popular??
  
  MANY inventions are now in the early stages "begging" for big investors...
  and all of a sudden.... you see them as a "trend"

  You may of missed the boat slightly, but you can still pick up some bargains on the IDN forums which in 5 not 20 years time will give you a good return.
