In case you didn't know host gator affiliates pay structure is

1-5 a month $50
6-10 a month $75
11-20 a month $100
21 or more $125

what is to stop people from just actually just pay people money or cover the cost of there hosting for a few months to sign up under them they would still be making a huge profit?

Maybe nothing...or maybe the terms of service?

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

I'm sure they have people monitoring affiliate sales for that very reason.

Not to mention, you have 2 months before you get paid. So if they sign up and cancel after 45 days, you get your commission taken back.

Right but I wasn't thinking anything unethical or anything just basically offer to pay for there first few months for people who accually need hosting and would most likely continue to use it afterwards.. Like if I said I will pay for 3 months of your hosting ($23.85) once they have kept it for 3 months then I would still be making over $100 if I sell 21 or more a month and the customer would get 3 free months

I know of a very successful affiliate that pays $50 to those that sign up through their link.

He has been doing this for a couple years now, so I doubt he is going against tos.

Guys - almost all of the big hosting companies do not allow affiliates to offer any kind of incentive. I think it makes it hardly worth bothering.

That said, people do it. I have seen a reputable marketer offer video tutorials and $10 cash back via PayPal to sign up using his link. It's against the TOS for sure.

I think it's a crappy policy personally. People should be allowed to offer incentives that are not cash.

For example: say I had a website that provided free info on something related to web hosting, and I had an autoresponder ... perhaps I could "sell" people on the idea that if they signed up to hosting via my link I'd install WordPress for them, or something like that (easily outsourced). I don't see how this could harm the webhost that wins business from it. The commission would be justified.

In any case, if you do offer an incentive I think it's safest to do it via email autoresponder so it's not visible on a site.
