I don't understand how using social bookmarking sites such as delicious.com can help me with link development or getting hits to my site? How can me going around booking marking stuff, including my own site, lead to any additional backlinks to my site?

Somehow I'm missing something here. I've read some articles that make this sound like a solid winner, but I don't even see how it can work.

If someone could explain how this "does its magic", I'd appreciate it - I'm trying to get my arms around the whole concept of how social bookmarking can generate traffic and/or backlinks.

I mean surely Google does not award you a respectable backlink just because you bookmarked a page??

The original purpose of social bookmarking was to "bookmark" interesting pages/websites so that the general masses can see it for entertainment/news purposes... However, internet marketers saw this as a tool and have somehow abused it by bookmarking just about any site they own, even if it doesn't appeal to the masses. I know because I do it too :p

Having that said, it's now a tool to spread the "news" about your new website/pages.

When you bookmark a web page you are asked for the url and title, and it then creates a backlink to that page.
You might not get much, if any, direct traffic through that link, but the backlink will help your site's rankings rise in the search engines.

Okay, I guess I'll do it just to see it work, but I thought Google was smarter than that? I mean why would they count a backlink just because someone puts it on a social bookmarking site? I thought it was only from high page rank sites that you got a good backlink?

I guess that makes sense. If it shows up on a social indexing site, Google probably should index it more quickly. But I guess I don't see how that would get you more hits or useful backlinks?

Okay, now this makes sense. I didn't realize - and sorry for being stupid - that the bookmarking sites had communities and groups. Now that makes sense: if you can get a few other people to bookmark you, then you've got a legitimate backlink.

But I read an article about social bookmarking software that literally created all of these for you and I can't believe Google is impressed by such things...

It can get sweet if you bookmark local stuff (I pitch local SEO) and/ or themed stuff

... after you collect a significant quantity of "like minded" or "themed" bookmarks... that RSS feed (the RSS feed to your social bookmarking profile) can be as valuable to you as the RSS feed to your blog.

    IM not so humble O:
At first people started bookmarking stuff online for much the same reason people store anything "in the cloud", it was still there for ya if you got a virus or had to reinstall your operating system.

... then, the idea of making your bookmarks PUBLIC gave one the ability to seek out other like minded people. what if you were into kitting, or polo, or bowling, or golf, or chess... you "stumble upon" someone near you (geographically near you) and discover, or should I say, pleasantly discover this new guy is into the same crap you are!

Then you check em out, he's got stuff YOU NEED, stuff bookmarked that you didn't know was even out there!!! bonus for you, after the whole social thing went into full swing, the "collaboration" part of all this meant a bonus for both of you.

This went on for some time, then Google noticed, then we noticed that Google noticed...

sadly, anything that can be abused, will be abused (heard that line from another Warrior way back when ListWarrior went down the drain).

Like RichJerk said: don't just bookmark YOUR stuff, bookmark anything that is similar to your stuff, bookmark stuff you find interesting, treat it as if it was your computer's favorites (with the exception of course that it's public, if you're into porn I'd keep that to your self for example)

I'll probably catch hell from the Warriors here that pitch automated SB systems but I get great results from doing it by hand, tweaking each submission a little, it's time consuming (really time consuming) but it's working for me.

For example the night of Frederick Maryland's snow storm (where we got 22 inches of snow in 24 hours) I dominated the serps for the entire 24 hour period with my client's "snow removal" urls, at one point we were taking 9 of the 10 organic serps...

we're still taking up half the page

I didn't know I was steppin on RichJerk's toes, haven't tried his SB software but I've never seen him steer anyone wrong here and we've both been members her for a decade or close to it...

that said, I used to use socialmarker.com stopped using it cause it loads too slowly.

Now I just use the extensive list on Addthis.com
just add the toolbar, gotta warn you though, signing up for dozens or hundreds of social bookmarking sites is: rewarding and TIME CONSUMING

there is no other way around it, you either want to succeed or you wanna complain about it.

another warning: these sites value comes and goes, Digg.com used to be the monster, it's worth-less (Not worthless, just worth less than it used to be)

        same thing for squidoo,

you gotta take the good with the bad, I considered it time well spent.

For example, I pitch Local SEO, just log into Mixx.com or Propeller.com and search for your state. You'll see just how few people know how to do what we do, we're most definitely in the minority.

Bookmarking is the best monetization method while performing the SEO. You can get famous with Bookmarking sites, you can drive quality traffic from authority sites. Sites like Digg and Stumbleupon have great audience and you can promote your niche or product with such sites. You will also gain some backlinks from these sites.
