.com domain is taken, can I use .tv domain or will I get in trouble?

first off all, why would it be "illegal" to buy or use a .tv domain?
If you use a brand name in the domain then yes, you can get in trouble...but you won't do that right?

Hi yes it is totally fine to use it as far as my knowledge. But if you want to be exactly sure you can always do a quick google search. If you can't find anything on the subject it probably doesn't exist... LOL

No you won't get into legal trouble, however, I rarely see the TVs high in search engine rankings. They are also more expensive to register. The TV extension also implies a digital media site with videos. It is ideally suited for a video site, IMHO. I would steer clear and go back to the drawing board and find a .com or .net.

Your question makes me wonder if there is a bit more to this story than you're revealing here. Why would you think that buying a domain name would get you "in trouble" unless you believed you were infringing upon someones copyrighted name?

As other posters have already mentioned its the name before the TLD that can get you into legal hot water if you choose something that is a trademark or is copyrighted by a well known company or individual. So microsoft.tv is probably a bad idea!

The advice you have received here is sound - stay away from .WS, .TV is really only useful for media sites and .COM is your best bet - unless your site is in the UK, Australia, New Zealand or Canada in which the local country TLD's are also common.

Without revealing the actual name could you explain to us why you suspect buying this name would get you "in trouble"?

pepsi.tv
cocacola.tv
google.tv ... etc..

everything else your good to go.

  I have worried about getting in trouble before also. If the .com is taken and you can't find it on Google how do you know it is not trademarked. Anyone could trademark their site even if they are not some major brand. I have looked for .com's before that were registered, but didn't show up on any of the search engines, so I didn't buy the .net because I was worried about getting in trouble.

I never said I suspected buying this name would get me in trouble. There isn't anything that I'm not revealing.

I just asked a question because I was worried that the people who own the .com could get mad at me for using the same name.

I have know idea who they are, they don't even have a website and I have no idea if they have registered a trademark or anything.

I just know the .com is taken and there's no site in that domain, that is it! And by the way, it isn't microsoft.com, pepsi.com. cocacola.com, and nothing near it...the name consists of just two common words and no brand that I know of is associated with them.

I am currently in the middle of something like this, and I say to hell with them. If they have such a fantastic niche and cannot even be bothered to put any content on it to make it better for people then it is their loss when you come along and do something about it.

If you make a massive site yourself you could even argue that it is THEY who are squatting on your copyright since you built and developed the internet real estate and they are simply milking it for themselves.

You would need a good lawyer to argue this for you.

I often buy .TV domain names, but then I normally use them for video related to the topic or as redirect links for affiliate products that I am promoting in my podcast. Can't see a reason not to use them, pick one thats easy to remember and spell out if you are promoting using video or audio files though.

Can You tell us what the website is going to be about, or what is the domain name. Somebody might be able to give you some new Ideas for a domain name so you can get .com if that is what you really want.

.tv actually refers to the Pacific island of Tuvalu, nothng to do with video, although that is what it is used for.

The registering of .tv tld's is one of the island's main sources of revenue.

And yes, anyone can register a .tv name providing the bit before the "dot" is not a trademark or copyrighted.

If however you want to register yourname.com.tv (or yourname.net.tv, etc.) you have to be a resident of Tuvalu.

What I thinks is as far as your are promoting right thing not illegal or bad things than go ahead with .tv.

And it is more safe if it is your product and you want to tell people about your product so in this case it is absolutely fine.

If you use Amazon.tv for a site about the actual amazon basin I don't see a problem so long as you state in no uncertain terms you have nothing to do with amazon (the store) and redirect people to that...

However it is a grey area best avoided.

I uses to have a mindset before that only .com or maybe, maybe .net but after getting .info as an experiment and the site has done so well in 6 months already, So now I am much more open to other domain extensions other than .com and needless to say I am big fan of info domains as I can see their potential now.

  I would stick with .com, .net and .org only, with no hyphens and as long as it's not a trademarked or copyrighted domain name. If you can't get one of the main three extensions, try a short modifier at the end of the domain name, like [domainname]now.com.

If you intend on using the name to build a brand around a video/media site then the .tv extension can work quite well.

If however you you are just looking for an alternative to .com then I'd stick to .net or .org if available.
