Quick New Years Tip for your Computer

Hey guys,

I just thought I would share this in case you are forgetful like I am.

When I first got this computer I am working on right now, I turned off the Disk Cleanup and Defrag Utilities. (I am using XP on this machine - I think Vista defrags automatically in the background)

Long story short -

I deleted a bunch of old programs I don't use anymore, tons of mp3's, ebooks, training videos, and other nonsense stuff that is outdated anyway!

Then I ran the Clean Disk Utility and degragged the hard drive.

I cannot believe the difference it made! This thing is a race horse again.

I hope this helps - anybody else have any maintenance tips that dumbasses like me might have turned off years ago?

Allen

You might also want to look into the free tool called CCleaner, you'd be shocked at all the temp files and registry errors you have on your machine.

There's nothing that guy doesn't know it seems.

Another good program for you would be TuneUp
Utilities 2010, you can get the fully licensed
version off eBay for about $2-3.

Switch on Turbo Mode and you'll see a noticeable
improvement in performance and run 1 Click
        Maintenance regularly.

        Hope this helps you out.

        Best regards.

Ultimately with a computer, the best thing is to eventually rebuild the entire system. This is a major undertaking though.

      Few other things I do:

      - keep the drive that contains the Windows folder, keep it with at least 2 to 3 gig of free space. Windows starts to slow down majorly when it begins to run out of space (you can hear the hard disk churning!).

      - also, change your virtual memory/swap file to 3 times the amount of RAM you have. This is optimum.

      - I would advise ccleaner too. Even though I promote CB registry products, I don't recommend such paid (and not particularly good) software to my friends, better they use ccleaner.

      - go to Start, Run, msconfig <enter>. The startup tab, you can disable some cr@p from loading when you first turn your computer on. Go easy here and don't switch off everything at once.

My best and easiest tip is my earlier one though. I highly recommend it. The fancy stuff is just a gimmick that impresses you for 10 minutes but punishes you for a lifetime if you don't turn it off.
I agree with the above, also the best practice is to keep all your work on an external hard disk so if there was a major crash with your PC, then at least your work files are ok

this is how I work on my MAC and PC

I have the OS, the applications that I need and obviously no other gimmicky software or utils..... and a means of backing this up, I have a ghost image of the PC so if I ever needed to rebuild, i just put the image back on the PC and hey presto, im working again, only takes 10 mins to rebuild with ghost

The rebuild process on the MAC is far more quicker than on the PC in my opinion, takes me 45 mins to rebuild the MAC

      hope this helps
