Stock Photography: Search Royalty Free Images & Photos -They are a bit expensive, but they have a very large selection and their quality is very good.

Royalty Free Photos, Download Stock Photos and Images Stock Photos Royalty Free Downloads - They are a little cheaper, but their selection isn't quite as extensive as istock.

Stock Photography: Download Free Stock Photos & Royalty Free Images - Similar in price to bigstockphoto, and with about the same selection as bigstockphoto.

that depends on what type of photos you want? you could use stock.xchng - the leading free stock photography site

or if you need specific photos like ebook covers and other things related to your product, then you could hire a warrior in the warrior for hire section, here

There is a big problem with using free photos, though. How can you be absolutely certain that the person who uploaded it with creative commons licensing actually had the rights to do so? Anyone could upload anything and claim they had the rights to do it, but that doesn't mean they did. They could upload an image from Corbis and if you used it, you'd be in some big trouble.

The same thing could happen with paid stock agencies, but it's less likely. It's also more likely that the photo would be discovered and removed quickly at a stock agency.

I almost always use Big Stock Photo now, which is the second link in Taylor's post. The reason is that the licensing agreements on other sites are a little ambiguous about what you can and can't do in terms of distributing digital products that use the images on the cover. With Big Stock Photo, you're free and clear so I go with them for peace of mind.

This is very important guys! MANY people grab images wherever they like (even a general Google search lol).

But, even those who buy images often don't read the licensing terms at stock image sites and just assume if they buy an image that they can do what they want with it.

      This is not the case.

      Kezz is right on BigStockPhoto:
Their standard license allows you to use the images you purchase on your personal products, sites, etc. as well as in packages that you have for resale such as web templates.

iStockphoto and Dreamstime require that you buy an extended license per image if you want to use it on a web template or anything other item for resale such mugs, tshirts, etc.

Although an ebook is technically something for resale, it's obviously different and does fall under the standard license for fair use.
You're ok with iStockPhoto's standard license if it is for your own ebook - up to 500,000 downloads.
I know you are ok with BigStockPhoto and I'm 98.9% sure you'd be fine with Dreamstime as well.

You would definitely need an extended license if you're using that image for an ebook cover design template that you create for resale and selling it to your customers for the purpose of them using it on their products, or editing for their own designs, etc.

      Hope that helps.
      Cheers
      Jay

if you buy a digital photo.. the seller would expect you to use in your website for commercial purpose. but if you want to "resale" like packaging it in your template, or if you are web designer and you use it for multiple websites for your customers, yes, you need specific license from owner.. as long as you buy it from a reputable merchant.. your risk of buying it from a non-owner is low.

I've used canstockphoto quite a bit and been happy with it. You have to buy credits and I think the minimum is something like $12 for ten credits or something like that. Many images are only 2-3 credits--more if you want larger sizes.

Just make sure you NEVER use a photo from GettyImages unless you've purchased it! Somebody learned a harsh lesson once...don't mess with Getty!
