Click on keywords and you will see

What is your opinion and what have you noticed?

Have you checked your blogs?

Ah..so many things running on my mind.. Is this good or bad?

    Hi, Ross.

Here is my take on the Alexa data you have found.

As you already know I have studied Alexa's keyword data for a while, and your finding is very similar to what I have found for other websites as yours.

You see, the Alexa data is, as someone already has stated, old data.

Your website probably has some decent traffic coming on a regular basic, but it has a Google PR rank of 1.

Websites with low PR are very often suffering from what we call the Google Dance.

One period you are in the first 10 search result at Google for one keyword phrase, then it drops off the map.

Since Alexa is slow on updating their database you find keywords that gave you some traffic in the past as the current top keyword in Alexa.

If you do the same analyze with a website with high PR, you will probably see that those keywords that Alexa is telling are your main keyword for traffic still is in the top 20 result at Google. The data is still old, but the keyword is more stable in the Google search results.

This is at least my opinion on why you find some odd keyword data at Alexa that you don't find in the search result at Google.

    Hope this helps.

    - Oddvar.

I don't know the girl, but c'mon - please, don't you think it might be a little uncomfortable or embarrassing for her to see a marketing thread hijacked and regress into 'lads talk'.

I'd say that courtesy and respect would go a long way - seeing as your comments can be seen by men AND women.

Flame me if you wish, but, this sort of talk does nothing for the forum - in my humble opinion.

      I agree.

I think this should be in the "off topic forum".

Once or twice it is funny but if we keep referring to "Alexa Smith" and treat her as a sex object the person loses my respect. This is an Internet marketing forum and some of the comments above have no relation to the main OP's topic.

You know Ross, I have to be honest. Until I saw this thread, I hadn't checked
my Alexa rank of my main domain in years. I really don't give it any weight
at all. But just for the heck of it, I did check so I could see what it is
you're talking about and I was surprised to see an Alexa rank of like 60,000
        and change.

Now, I know how much traffic I get and there is NO way there are only 59,000
sites with more traffic. I refuse to believe it.

Anyway, I checked the keywords and they're nothing like yours. In fact,
        they're pretty mundane.

I don't know if this is good or bad.

For what it's worth, I give Alexa as much thought as I do to my high school
        girlfriend.

Did someone make a comment that was later edited?

The thread title said "Alexa" and a few people thought it might be about "Alexa Smith"....

Am I missing something or are you just being preemptive?

Not as far as I know - perhaps I am being a little pre-emptive, it's not my forum and I'm not the 'morality police' - I just thought the thread was taking 'a turn'.

Alexa is an okay tool. I use Awstats and Statcounter. I have been experimenting with not using google analytics on my blogs. I personally find statcounter very easy to use compared to analytics, but that is just me. Thanks for the post.

For your keywords it looks like people are interested in your products/services but are leery of buying, so they are checking to see if they find negative reviews and comments.

That's both good and bad. It's good that whatever you are selling has them that interested. It's bad that so many people find your credibility questionable.

On another note, like Steven, I haven't checked my site at Alexa in ages. After my site was hacked it fell out of the search engines last year. Once I cleaned up the damage and started marketing it again, it's good to see it's ranked at around 150k. That puts it in the 1% again.

    Hey Ross,

Well that Alexa (site) would be both good and bad..
so there's not much point thinking about it..

If you do your products well and your customers
agree with you IMO that would be enough..

As for our very own Alexa Smith..Hey I admire her too..
She seems to emit a different kind of appeal..

I just hope that now that the cat is out..Every Tom, Dick and Harry
won't try to prefix their post with "Alexa".

    All the best,

Correct me if i'm wrong but Alexa's stats are based on that toolbar. So how come people are so serious about the stats of alexa ? Alexa is neglecting lot of visitors which are not having toolbars installed, same case with technorati. If you don't paste their code in template/theme how you gonna figure out that they are tracking you ?

How these sites figure out about traffic without using toolbar/js script ?

It's all a guess and all of it is wrong .. I do not care what stats program you use.. You are wasting your time because the fact is the only way to get your true stats is by a system that is connected to your server logs..

None of those stats system like alexa, compete, google crap tool, and those other junk stats sites can track your visitors because they do not have access to your server log. Even with code on your site they still can not track it properly...

Agree James, server logs are more accurate. (I think Google trends can access our stats if we are using Google Analytics sharing feature, which was introduced last year by google. I'm not sure about this feature as i've not enabled it).

Well pardon my ignorance...I don't know who is she and I thought many of us here knows alexa.com and I'm not that *&%%$$!# to post it in the discussion. This forum talks more about Internet marketing, make money, conversion, traffic, etc. and I highly respect this forum.

I just wondering why many domaineers are still checking alexa ranking where in fact they just checking it using their toolbar (which I think only work on IE in year 2000, I don't know today). I checked my awstats and I didn't see some of the keywords there. Oddvar was right that he said it could be old searches and yet there are still some people using the toolbar. Perhaps they are still valuable for some even with incomplete information.

I find Google Analytics waaaay more accurate and interesting for my own sites. And based on what Alexa.com says about my sites vs. google analytics, I don't really trust it.

And maybe as a convention we could refer to the business as Alexa.com to save confusion that it is the site not someone called Alexa
